I am still working on my Johnson and Nettles families in the South Eastern Missouri Area. Any information is eagerly appreciated. What I have so far: 1876 Census for Ripley Co. shows Township 22 Range 1E James Johnson 18 - 21 3 horses, 8 cattle, 5 sheep, 26 hogs, 18 bush. wheat, 250 bush. corn, 100 lbs tobacco, 10 lbs wool, 110 gal. molasses Sarah Johnson 21 to 45 Mary F. Hinkle 10 - 18 Shadrack Hinkle under 10 Carter T. Hinkle under 10 William M. Hinkle under 10 I show buried at Elizabeth Cemetery (Possible son) Arche Johnson 9 Aug 1893 - 9 Dec 1894 son of J. W. and S. E. Johnson. 4 Graves marked by rocks are near this grave - unreadable. On the 1880 US Census, James Johnson is shown living next door to his mother Martha Johnson (widowed) and two of his siblings William and Martha A. Sarah Nettles first married Francis HINKLE, who was born in Missouri, probably in Ripley County near the Arkansas border. (This area became Oregon County in 1845.) Sarah was probably also born in this same area. Interestingly they were married in Randolph County, Arkansas which borders Oregon County to the south and their first child, Francis was born there as well. The family then moved back to Ripley County, MO sometime before the birth of their second son, Shadrach who was born in Ripley County, Missouri, probably in Doniphan Township. Francis HINKLE probably died sometime after 1873, when his youngest son William M. was born, but before 1876 when according to the 1876 Missouri State census Sarah was married to James JOHNSON (ref: 1876 MO Census - Ripley Co pg4 TWP No 22 North of range No.1 W - Line 76 thru 80). It is unlikely that he was still living and left the property to his wife Sarah since during that period females did not generally own land. 1880 US Census shows fb NC and mb KY 1880 USCensus Ripley Co. He probably traveled west with his family as a young man during the great migrations out of Tennessee and Kentucky after Missouri became a state in 1821 and the farming land there was cheap and plentiful. He met and married Martha Moore in Doniphan, Ripley County Missouri and while they had a son, Richard, when she was 15 and he was 19, they weren't married until January 16, 1851 according to the marriage book in Ripley County, which coincides with the birth of their second son Henry. They would have been 25 and 21 respectively at that time. James Johnson's father was Samuel Johnson and his mother was Martha Johnson as set out below. I have no other proof of this except the coincidence of census data, ages and location. 1860 US Census, Oregon Co., Jobe Twp, MO, pg 160 - 23 June 1860 Johnson, Samuel 34 TN (1826) Martha 30 KY (1830) Richard 15 MO (1845) Henry 9 MO (1851) Winnie 7 MO (1853) James 3 MO (1857) William 6mo MO (1859) Neither Samuel nor wife, Martha, and family are listed in the 1870 Oregon Co.
