    1. [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] Brimhall family
    2. Mike Landwehr
    3. Hi Micky, I enjoyed the info you posted on the Pool and Brimhall families. I don't have much in my files about the Brimhall family. You probably have the following, but I'll pass along my file notes in case there is anything that would be of interest to you: 1) Kizey Brimhall married Josiah Chapin in Oregon County on Feb 17, 1853. Josiah and Kiza Chapin (age 24, born MO) and children were in Howell County in 1860 census. 2) Marah Brimhall married John W. Dunking in Oregon County on Feb 8, 1852. 3) Lusey (Lucy) Brimhall married Henry Pool in Howell Township of Oregon County on Dec 23, 1845. Henry (age 26) and Lucinda (age 23) Pool and family were listed in Oregon County in 1850. A Lucy Pool, apparently a widow, age 32, born in Illinois, appears "next door" in 1860 to John and Trythenia Pool. 4) Trythenia Brimhall married John Pool in Oregon County on Aug 8, 1856. A John Pool, age 26, born Illinois, and Trythenia Pool, age 34, born Illiinois, appear in the 1860 census of Cane Hill Township of Washington County, AR. 5) Joseph Brimhall married Carline Butcher in Oregon County on Oct 18, 1853. Caroline received payment as indigent wife/widow in Texas during Civil War. Ancestry.com indicates that she remarried to a Daniel Cannon in Parker County, Texas, in 1874. 6) William H. Brimhall married Matilda G. Butcher in Oregon County on Oct 18, 1853. They appear in Oak Grove Township in 1860. Micky, I've long wondered about the Rody E. Brimhall who married Thomas Hall in Oregon County on August 15, 1856. Based solely on the 1860 census, Rody was reportedly born in Missouri about 1835. I note in the 1850 census that the Joseph and Mary Brimhall family included a daughter who was 14 years old, but her name appears to be Risia Brimhall (not sure of the spelling). Do you know whether the Rody E. Brimhall who married Thomas Hall was a sister to Lucinda Brimhall and Tryphene Brimhall? Thomas and Rody/Rhoda Hall appear in the 1860 Oregon County census, but seem to disappear after that. Do you have any idea what happened to them? I don't have anything on the McCammon family, except for the family of Benjamin McCammon (1838-1890). If he is part of your line, and you want more information about him, please let me know. Thanks, Mike Landwehr

    1. [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] Martha Ellen POOL
    2. MICHELLE ROUX
    3. Marie, Mike, & Others: I am studying with great interest the research of Martha Ellen POOL. She is, according to my research, the daughter of Joel POOL and Sarah Ann THOMAS. Sarah Ann THOMAS later married Matthew McCAMMON (aka McCAMERON). Additionally, John Thomas POOL, Martha's brother, married Triphene BRIMHALL. Triphene was divorced from James M McCAMMON, Matthew's son, prior to her marriage to John Thomas POOL. The McCAMMON connection doesn't end there. James Edward POOL, son of John Thomas POOL and Nancy E CARPENTER, married Susan McCAMMON, daughter of Matthew W McCAMMON and Jane LAFOON, grandaughter of James & Triphene McCAMMON. Furthermore, James Henry POOL, also the son of Joel & Sarah Ann POOL, married Lucinda BRIMHALL, sister to Triphene. Below are a couple of notes from my GEDCOM. This is a very confusing line. A pedigree chart is a must in order to keep everyone straight! My point, other than sharing research, is that I am still in search of documentation on the McCAMMON/McCAMERON/McCAMRON line. At the end of this message, I have copied my transcription to a biography on John Thomas POOL. I believe it is key to understanding the intertwined relationship of the Pool, McCammon, and Brimhall families. 1850 Oregon Co, MO Census, District 65. "James Thomas Pool. This successful farmer and stock dealer of Howell County, Mo., owes his nativity to Humphreys County, Tenn., where he first saw the light in 1833. His parents, Joel and Sarah Ann (Thomas) Pool, were worthy people, and the father died in Humphreys County, Tenn., before the subject of this sketch was born. When he was about one year old, he was brought by his mother to Howell County, Mo., after her marriage with Matthew A. McCammon, and in this section the rest of their lives were spent. They died some years after the close of the Civil War, worthy members of the Methodist Church. John Thomas Pool was the youngest of four children born to his parents: James Henry (deceased) was a farmer of Dallas County, Tex.; William died before the war in Illinois; Martha Ellen became the wife of Levi Hedges, and during the war got separated from the rest of the family and died in southeast Missouri. The subject of this sketch was reared on a farm, in Howell County, from his infancy, and all the schooling he ever received was one month and thirteen days, which was owing to the extreme newness of the country at the time his mother and stepfather located here, there being no schools to attend. When fifteen years old he began life for himself as a farm hand, but at the end of six months took up a claim in what is now Howell County, which he improved and cleared, and which he still owns. His sole possessions when he commenced for himself consisted of an ax and a gun, and he purchased with the money obtained for his six months' labor a plow. The game which fell under the aim of his trusty rifle he sold, and was then enabled in time to purchase a yoke of steers; he then set vigorously to work on his farm, and his efforts were slowly but surely crowned with success. He first was married in 1857 to Tryphene Brimhall, a daughter of Joseph and Rhoda Brimhall, who removed from Massachusetts to Shelby County, Ill., in an early day, where they were married, after which they came to Howell County, Mo and died in this state. Mrs. Pool was born in Illinois and died in 1873, and on August 26, 1875, Mr. Pool wedded Nancy E., daughter of Rev. Thomas Wright Carpenter. She was born in Scott County, and has borne her husband the following children: John Thomas (deceased), William H. (deceased), James Edward, Nora May, Nellie E, Norvin C. (deceased), Bertha O. and Bertie O., were twins (the last mentioned is dead), Mary E., Lola E., and Bennie Pearl. Since his marriage Mr. Pool has made a home in Howell County, and is one of its most progressive and successful farmers. He has resided on his present farm of 357 acres, located two miles east of West Plains, which is one of the most fertile and well improved farms of the county, and in addition to this he has sufficient land to amount to 1,140 acres in all; all of which has been acquired through his own efforts. He is very extensively engaged in feeding and shipping live stock, and has found this to be a profitable employment. He is perhaps the oldest settler of the county, and during these many years he has seen the country grow from a wild and almost totally uninhabited region to a thickly peopled district, with thriving towns, villages and farms, and has done his share in bringing about this transformation. He is a member of Mt. Zion Lodge No. 327 of the A.F. & A.M of West Plains, in which order he is an influential member and an active worker. He has been very successful in his business operations, notwithstanding the disadvantages of a meager education, has grasped at every opportunity that has presented itself for bettering his financial condition, and during the early years of his live labored early and late to accumulate a competency. During the hunting season he would frequently make $16 a day with his gun and $300 during the season, and hunted rather for the profit than for the sport. When he was married he could neither read nor write, but his wife was a woman of considerable education and intelligence and by her instructions he became a fair scholar." Apologies for the length of this message. Looking forward to hearing from you. 3. Notes for JOHN HILL: John Hill was living at Mammoth Springs AR, in 1893 when he along with five other bandits attempted to rob a train at Olyphant in White Co, AR. According to stories in the Arkansas Gazette, when captured he used the alias "Albert Mansker". He and two others were hung for the murder of the conductor during the robbery. The hanging took place in 1894 at Newport, AR in Jackson Co. "John Hill was hung April 6, 1894 for his part of the Olyphant train robbery and the killing of conductor W P McNally near Newport AR on 11-4-1893. John Hill was hung in Newport on one gallows simultaneously with Tom Brady and Jim Wyrick. They maintained their innocence of the actual murder to the end and spent their last night singing hymns and praying while waiting for the reprieve that never came. Hill was convicted by a second trial, the first ending in a hung jury." "Others of the 10 member gang received sentences; George M Padgett turned states evidence, Jack Williams was captured later at Witt Springs (most were captured at Jamestown, Independence Co, AR near Batesville). One gang member, not named but said to be "from good family" in Madison Co and thought to have done the actual shooting of the conductor, was caught two years later. But by then people had had enough hanging and he was released without punishment. James W Butler was the trial judge and Sheriff's Patterson and Pennington were instrumental in the arrest. Several gang members were from Silom Springs, AR, John Hill alias Albert Mansker", was reported to be "a respected citizen of Mammoth Springs, AR. This was the only triple hanging in Newport's history. Reference: the Independence Co. Chronicle, Vol II, No. 1 published by the Independence Co Historical Society, Batesville, AR Oct. 196?

    3. Hi Marie, The 1850 census of Oregon County includes the family of Levi and Martha A. Hodges. The record appears as follows: Levi Hodges 23 Ala Martha A. 24 Ten Martha A. 1/12 Mo John A. Roberts 6 Mo Sarah J. 4 Mo Lucinda 2 Mo I would guess that the one-month-old Martha A. Hodges was the daughter of Levi and Martha. The census of this household was enumerated on August 23, 1850. If they completed the census correctly, Martha A. Hodges was born in April of 1850 (though I wouldn't bet on the accuracy of that date). My interest in the Alexander Roberts family is the marriage of Rebecca Roberts to Simpson Couch, the marriage of Nancy Roberts to John D. Taylor, and especially the marriage of James Roberts to Roena Hall. Good luck! 3. According to some notes from Tom Arnold, it is believed that "Albert Mansker" that robbed a train in Olyphant, Arkansas, was Mary Hill's son, John. There was a train robbery, and men were hung, but the following link does not lead us to believe that it was Mary's son, unless Mary was once a Mullins or the information in the link is incorrect? http://www.mansker.org/history/albert.htm I don't know where Tom Arnold gets the idea that it was Mary's son, John Hill. Do you know Tom Arnold? Was Mary Hill's son a school teacher? I have not seen proof of this information, but it is interesting that Tom Arnold thinks Albert Mansker was our Mary's son, John Hill. Since 2 of the Mary DAVIS mentioned I am well aware of, and who they were proven by resources and direct family members, I am sending this to the list in hopes that someone on the list can pass it on to the society for next issue. 1. Mary DAVIS, who mar. Littleton Horace DAVIS and is buried at New Salem Cem., was Mary Ann DUBOISE, dau. of Elias H. DUBOISE and his wife, Rebecca. She was born 1820 in Tennessee, and Mary Ann was married to Thomas Hill, and had the Mary Ann Rebecca HILL, who mar. Lorenzo D. 'Rance" DAVIS, son of Littleton Horace DAVIS and his 1st wife, Jemima [Mina] MADDOX [who is also buried at New Salem]. After Thomas HILL's death, Mary Ann [the mother] married James HOWERTON on 3 May 1859 in Oregon Co. After his death Mary DUBOISE HILL HOWERTON, married Littleton Horace DAVIS. 2. Mary Ann Rebecca HILL DAVIS, was indeed the dau of Thomas and Mary A. DUBOISE HILL, and married Lorenzo D. 'Rance" DAVIS, 3rd son of Littleton Horace DAVIS and Jemima [Mina] MADDOX. Littleton Horace DAVIS was my 3great grandfather, and I have researched his DAVIS lines extensively. All of this information is in the Welcome K. BENNETT book which I previously donated to the OCGS a few years ago. It contains several documentation articles which should have cleared this confusion up. [Welcome K. BENNETT had a son, James, who mar. Littleton H. DAVIS's dau, Ladora Olive [Ollie] DAVIS, by L.H.'s 1st wife]. As for the 3rd Mary Davis, I am unfamiliar with her, as her husb. Eliphas, is not of my line. oh yes, the minors mentioned in the Estate of Mary Davis, wife of L.H., were: Littleton Horace Jr.[sometimes referred to Horace Littleton], Lorenzo Dow [Rance], and James F. DAVIS who were the children, of course. Rance was very prominent in the county and has an obit on file. Would someone please pass this along so that the clarification can be made in the next issue?
