Lanita, The Missouri Death Certificate Project has been a great project for my family research. There are still some mysteries and probably a lot of deaths that never were registered from Oregon County. Lanita, I have used the Missouri Death Certificate website so much. We have family in Texas, Howell, Dent, Shannon and Oregon County. My dad's House line was extensive in Missouri and Arkansas. I was looking for one of his grandmother's sister's lines and found Allie Margaret Green by putting in Margaret and going through all of the Margaret's in Howell County. Found her! She had married Thomas West and without the death certificates I would never have found her, her husband or family. I was then able to trace her family back in the census. Not always lucky tho, tried her sister, Mary Martha Green in Howell, Shannon and Texas counties but she must have moved out of the area. I wish that every state had the same kind of website, wonderful for researching! My sister and I order the five at a time that are not available to be copied yet. As soon as we get one order back we send another one, have found lots of info that way. Pat, you are sure correct that a lot of deaths were never registered. I have a great aunt who died in the 40's, have her obit, tombstone picture, and funeral record but no death certificate. We have even tried with different spellings but no luck! Lanita, Good idea. Thanks for sharing. In reconstructing the 1890 Idaho Federal census, a volunteer went through the 1900 census and listed the children who were born in Idaho and were 10 or more years old in the 1900 census--the assumption being that they were alive and living in Idaho in 1890. Another novel way to look at existing data. Joan Griffin Rusk
I have just spent the afternoon going through the death certificates at the MO archives for some of my families. At first I didn't look at those whose names I didn't have in my database, but after finding some infants that I didn't know about whose info provided some answers, I have now gone back and tried all of those in the area. I have found many new leads, and am quite excited at this new info. I thought I would share that key with you. So, don't be afraid to try all of them, there are some real treasures out there to find in those certificates!! http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/#search Good luck! Lanita
According to Lewis Simpson, deceased historian from Alton, the name Oregon was selected for Oregon County because the Oregon Trail was very much in the news in those days and the people liked the name. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gene Phillips" <okienms@telepath.com> To: <mo-oregon-history@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2007 8:05 PM Subject: Re: [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] Fristoe's Regiment, MO Calvary > It was never named Webster. When Howell County was created from half of Oregon County, the county seat of Oregon County that is Thomasville was left too far to the edge and not adhering to the rule to have county seats near the center of the county. Leaders were selected to meet and find a new location as well as a name for the new county seat. They met in a house near where Alton now sits, The name of Alton was selected as easy to say and spell because the new county clerk was poor at spelling. He proved that in the very first set of notes he took by spelling it Owlton. Much of the migration to Oregon County was from near Marshfield, the county seat of Webster County. That migration was set off in two waves, the opening of land in Oregon County about 1870 and the railroad which was being built in 1882 but most of the people moved to Thayer around 1884-5. Marshfield was settled by many from eastern TN and southern KY around the Cumberland Gap area which was the case with my ancestors. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lanita Sconce Smith" <ozarkn@grm.net> To: <mo-oregon-history@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2007 8:16 PM Subject: Re: [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] Webster > Sorry, all of the Oregon Co boys were listed as being in WEBSTER > County, the old county name before they came up with Oregon. I just looked at Ed's and it listed them as being from Webster, MO. The first page of the history shows that Company G, the company the Couch boys were in was formed in Webster TOWNSHIP. Apparently that township no longer exists or the name changed. It could also be in a neighboring county and that was the closest place they could sign up. A note on Ed's page says the location listed is the place of enlistment, but may also be place of residence. My gg-grandfather Benjamin Phillips was also in Company G and he lived in Piney Township in Oregon County. Okay, I found my confusion. Simpson Couch landed in Oregon Co./Ripley Co./Lawrence Co., AR, in 1830s. When he settled in the land we now know as Oregon Co in the Couch community, the community was 1st named HY and then the name was changed to WEBSTER before Simpson changed it to COUCH. Here are just some of the original names of locations in the county and what they are called now: NOW/THEN Couch/ Hy and also called WEBSTER Thomasville/Rich Hill Alton/Owlton Pleasant Hill/Seed Tick Greer crossing/Bellow Falls Bardley/Tightwad New Liberty/Brawley Joliff Springs/Goober Creek Riverton/Johnson's Ferry Royal Oak/Stringtown Thayer/Division then it was called Augusta Hope this helps! Lanita I think my family tree is a few branches short of full bloom.
Sorry, all of the Oregon Co boys were listed as being in WEBSTER County, the old county name before they came up with Oregon. It was indeed a part of Ripley but the 1st name was Webster and not Oregon Co. It was that name a very short while, I've been trying to find where I found that.. will get back to you. Lanita
It was never named Webster. Oregon county was created in 1845 from part of Ripley County. Ripley County was created in 1833 from part of Wayne County. Wayne county was created before statehood and covered about the area of everything south of and including Springfield. Webster County was created in 1855 from land that was part of the original Wayne county. Lanita, I have been curious about how Oregon Co. camed to be named that. Do you have any idea or even why it was changed from Webster? Thanks Doris, for the book name to supply the source. Thanks too for all you do voluntarily at the library for all of us researchers! Lanita
Oregon Co. was originally named Webster before they changed it to Oregon. Lanita
Doris, The reference to Webster County is in error. I believe that it is an error in transcription, but am not sure. It is a reference to the village of Webster, which was a former name for the village of Couch, Missouri. This was interesting to me, perhaps will be to others. In History of Fristoe's Regiment Missouri Calvary, CSA compiled and written by Ed Grooms, I noticed that COUCH, Alfred P.; COUCH, Francis M. and COUCH, George W. all had Webster County listed as residence or place of enlistment. I thought they all had Oregon County roots.
