    3. I got this on another list. Thought I'd pass it along. Lanita Greetings List Members, Watch Out for Fraud With your help, the mailing list and message board administrators on RootsWeb do a good job of catching spam and keeping it out of your RootsWeb communications. However, I recently received an e-mail from an individual who had been contacted off the boards and solicited for what she thought was an obvious scam. The potential scammer said that she was looking for a distant relative of someone who had recently passed away and left an inheritance that would go unclaimed unless she could find a relative. This is a common type of e-mail fraud; if the victim bites, the scam artist often asks to get personal account information in order to wire the victim the purported inheritance. Or the scammer sends a bogus check or money order and asks for a portion of money in return. By the time the victim and bank discover the first check was a fraud, the victim has already given away a significant portion of real money. Since fraud on the Internet is so commonplace nowadays, it is good to keep yourself educated on what fraud looks like and how to avoid it. I conducted a quick search on the Web and found a few helpful sites on avoiding and reporting fraud. Take a few minutes to browse through them: Too Good to Be True--United States This site is sponsored by the United States Postal Service, the FBI, and other U.S. organizations. It identifies common types of fraud, gives contact information for filing a complaint about fraud, and provides other helpful links. http://www.lookstoogoodtobetrue.com/index.aspx Reporting Economic Crime On-Line--Canada Sponsored by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, this site provides a centralized place for Canadians to report any fraud, traditional or Internet-based. Complaints are directed to the appropriate agencies. Links and articles on fraud education are also included. http://www.recol.ca/ Advice Guide--UK This PDF, authored by the Citizens Advice Bureau, identifies common Internet scams and provides useful links for keeping up-to-date on the latest scams, reporting abuses, and more. http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/i_fraud_on_the_internet.pdf Also, if you see spam or something suspicious on a message board, please report it by clicking the "Report Abuse" link. If you see something suspicious on a mailing list, please notify the list administrator. Previously published in RootsWeb Review: 09 May 2007, Vol. 10, No. 19.

    3. Okay, I have a couple of new names.... both of the above were found in Ripley Co. They are descendants of John FERRELL and Zilpha MORRIS. I know they had a son, James, who mar. a Rose Ann. Of children of James and Rose Ann, there were: Sarah [Sally] [b. 1824 IL] who mar. Oliver PATTERSON. The PATTERSONS had: John, b. 1849 Rozy [aka Polly] b. 1851-1910, mar. Oliver RILEY James. b. 1854 B.F., b. 1856 George M. [or General; b. 1862, was found in Licking in 1910] C.P., b. 1865 All of these were descendants of John FERRELL and Zilpha MORRIS and JOHN was a bro. to Matilda FERRELL MARIOTT, w/o Wm. H., who settled in Randolph Co., AR. Anybody researching these families? Lanita

    1. [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] Kenneth Couch
    2. Mike Landwehr
    3. Hi Doris, You probably found the connection and reason that Kenneth Couch and his wife were buried in Oregon County. Nice work. The fact that Kenneth served as a pastor fits into what I've learned about this family over the past couple of days. Kenneth was apparently the fifth of six sons in his family. It doesn't appear that they stayed together as a family unit once the boys got old enough to go out on their own. The eldest, Charles Emmett, filled out his WW I draft registration card in Vergennes, Illinois, in 1917. The second-oldest boy in the family was Evert (Everett?) Raymond, who went by Raymond. He filled out his WW I draft registration card in Delaware, Oklahoma, in 1917. He listed his occupation as Minister of the M. E. Church. So at least two of the boys became ministers, it appears. Raymond appears in the 1930 census in Harris County, Texas. Those early ministers moved around a lot. The third son, Joseph Chester Couch, was living in Clinton County, Iowa, in the 1930 census. And the fourth son, William K. Couch, was living in Clay County, Mississippi, in the 1930 census. I have not been able to locate Kenneth in the 1930 census. Kenneth Couch was listed with his parents in the 1910 and 1920 census records. 3. I have Reilley/Riley family that came to Oregon Co., MO in about 1890 with no known connection. So far I don't know why they came there and although they are buried there, are not connected to any other family that was there previous to their arrival. That could be the same with the Couch family. My family was from Kentucky and there was a large Couch family there. Hi Carlene, Adding to what Mike said: Social Security Death Index: Kenneth Couch Last residence: Arnold, Jefferson County, MO 63010 Born: 26 Aug 1904 Died: June 1970 State (Year) SSN Issued: Illinois (1956-1958) 1930, MO, Carter, Johnson Twp, Dist 6: Couch, Joseph P., 65, m 22, IL IL IL Couch, Margarett, 61, m 18, IL NY IL You can order death certificates for both of them at the Missouri Secretary of State's web site that Lanita found a few days ago. I couldn't find Kenneth and Mercedes in the census. There was a Kenneth Couch in Linn County, MO, 1910 and 1920, that was the same age, but his father's name was Ernest and mother was Mary J. so it probably was not him. I'll bet they had nicknames or the names are misspelled. Judy --------------- Hi List, I just stumbled across this couple and am hoping to find more info on them. I found them in the records of Smith Cemetery, Oregon Co., MO. The cemetery records show these 4 Couches: Joseph P. Couch, b. Feb. 01, 1865; d. Oct. 21, 1933 Margaret A. Couch, b. Oct. 17, 1868; d, Jan. 17, 1941 Kenneth E. Couch, b. Aug. 26, 1904; d. June 16, 1970 Mercedes D. Couch, b. Mar. 18, 1910; d. 3. Carlene, I can provide you with a little information on the Joseph P. Couch and Margaret A. Couch buried in the Smith Cemetery. Joseph P. Couch was the son of Levi D. Couch and Harriet Litherland. Levi D. Couch was born in Illinois in 1835. One source reports that Levi's parents were Hiram Ransom Couch and Sarah Mary Starkey, but I can't confirm that. Levi and Harriet were living in Wabash County, Illinois, in 1870, when their son, Joseph P. Couch, was listed as six years old. In 1880, the Levi D. Couch family was in Lawrence County, Illinois. Joseph P. Couch married Margaret Anderson in Lawrence County, Illinois, on February 24, 1887. Joseph and Margaret apparently moved west to Washington soon after their marriage. Joseph P. and Margaret moved from Washington back to Illinois about 1900. They appear in the 1900 census of Edwards County, Illinois, with one daughter and three sons (all born in Washington). In 1910, Joseph and Margaret were in Jackson County, Illinois, with one daughter and six sons. In 1920, Joseph and Margaret were still in Jackson County, Illinois, with four sons (including Kenneth, who is also buried in the Smith Cemetery). By 1930, Joseph and Margaret had relocated to Carter County, Missouri. At this point, I don't see any evidence of a link between this Couch family and your Couch family of Oregon County. It is interesting to note that Joseph P. Couch died in Carter County in 1933. I wonder why he was buried in the Smith Cemetery? If you want to try to trace descendants, I believe that Margaret A. Couch died in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, in 1941, and that Kenneth E. Couch died in Jefferson County, Missouri, in 1970 . Hope this answers your question, Carlene. If you find a connection between this family and your Couch family, I would appreciate hearing about it. 3. Lanita, I've just put in the county and have looked at every name that came up You would be surprised at the number of people you'd find due to wrong spellings. It gave me a chance to look at the parents of people that I've been curious about and let me see connections that I didn't know existed The bad part of that kind of search is most of the counties have at least 4000 names. The reward was worth it.
