    3. Hi Ann, I went to your site and was looking at my Sarah Louisa Sammons, she was named after Jacob's first wife and second wife. She married James Thomas Brewer first, then Joseph Thomas Hall. I have a question for you. You mention on your site that her father was "James Jacob Sammons". I have him as Jacob Sammons b. 1805 Kentucky and the same on his marriage to Sarah Stubblefield, I know her Uncle was James Benjamin Sammons b. 1800 Franklin Co. TN. On all of the census work, I've done, he is listed as Jacob Sammons. Is there a Bible record out there or another piece to my Sammons puzzle I'm missin? Let me know. Thanks so much, Kara Sammons Spoon Kara- Enjoying the genealogy puzzle! The 20th Great Grandaughter of Hugh Rose 1 Laird of Kilravock - Scotland

    3. Lanita, I've been to the State Archives only once. It's a very nice facility. Don't remember a lot about their holdings. I've found it most useful as a source of Civil War military records for Missouri units (particularly the Missouri State Guard). 2. I don't know when you were planning on going to the Missouri State Archives. I thought I would share with you that the Missouri State Genealogy Conference will be held in Jefferson City, August 3 & 4. Friday morning they will be doing a tour of the archives. Even if you didn't wish to go to all of the conference, you might want to go on the tour to learn what is available. The Missouri State web site is _http://www.mosga.org/_ (http://www.mosga.org/) The Missouri State Archives - _http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/_ (http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/) Hope this might help you with your research. 3. Parking was free two years ago, just a limited amount. If someone can take and pick you up, that wouldn't be a problem. They do have lockers for what you can't take in. There is a "sort of" catalog online at http://msa.library.net/ You can find a lot in four hours, but you'll want to return...I can guarantee that. Many family books that I've not seen anywhere else. Since I have so many families in MO, looks like if I go, that I will need to narrow them down with specific things I'm looking for. Will have about 4 hours if I want, just wondering what they could possibly have [I know, that sounds dumb! but the mother counties I have families, have great resources and their records were not burned during CW like some of other counties in the state]. I read somewhere that they might have neighboring states' info... anybody know? 3. I have been at the MO State Archives in Jeff City, also, but it was a number of years ago. I would echo the caution about what you plan to bring in. Many state archives and libraries will only allow _pencils_, so that stray marks can be erased. Some may now allow laptop computers, but the carrying case cannot be taken in, and there are limited places to plug in for power. This is all to protect the security of the documents the archives contain. I have taken a little hand-held scanner into state libraries, but that was obtained after I visited the MO Archives. All that being said, there are the records you would expect to find at the county level, but may have documents that the county has discarded, lost, or otherwise destroyed (fire, water, moldy cellars). You may also find some early newspapers, although the collection at Columbia is better for that, I believe. You may find some obscure things for which you would not even know to ask. For example, I found the cattle brand/earmark registrations for one ancestor (different state, but representative of the arcana that state archives may contain). The state archives would also be a better source for state level records (courts, prisons, state taxes, state census, state pension, Confederate veterans' records, highways construction) than would be true at the county level. Although I cannot, of course, guarantee that you will find that long lost document that ties your family into a nice, clear bundle, it does fit into the "leave no stone unturned" approach of the genealogist. I also suggest that you arrive early, oil up the writing hand for taking notes, plan to find more than you think you might, and bring lots of change if they do allow self-service copying (the state archives tend to be the pricier end of copy services). 3. Lanita, They are set up differently than a regular library and they are much more helpful, but exceptionally careful about documents. I only spent a couple of hours there because I didn't know their rules. It is best to go early. I had hoped to go back last summer, but it didn't happen. From what I was told, there is more information at Columbia than at Jeff City. Pat Miller Lanita Sconce Smith wrote: > Thanks, Pat. 3. Lanita, I've been there...two years ago. If you go remember that they won't let you take much inside with you. You have to put your things in a locker. Give them a call to see what the rules are and the parking is pretty tight too. If I remember correctly, they won't let you do your own copying and there is a time restraint on copies. They have a lot of books and lots of microfilm. I found things that I have not found anywhere else.
