    1. [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] ROLL CALL
    2. Lanita Sconce Smith
    3. Its been a while since we've had a roll call. I don't know about you but sometimes I forget who is researching who... and then when I continue the research, stumbled on to additional surnames not mentioned before. For this roll all that will end on Sun night at 10pm CST, please list some of your more important SURNAMES who are connected to ONE or TWO of your main lines in the area.... remember to put your SURNAMES in CAPS to make it easier for others to scan your email.... Remember, we have some new people on the list, so DON'T assume that everyone knows who you are researching.... we forget and add new names to ours and wish we could remember who it is on the list who might have info on that family. Feel free to discuss on the list... you never know who might have a tidbit of info not realizing that it will help you with a clue or insight on that family. Good luck! Lanita List Manager

    2. Hi List, I'm hoping someone here can help me with this one. I have a Harvey M. Barton, b. abt. 1907 (probably in Oregon Co.) to Marion F. and Nora L. Barton. One submitter on Rootsweb has this Harvey M. Barton married to Marie Unknown. I have nothing further on him. Then I have a Harvey M. Barton who married Ruth Helen Wheeler and had a son, Harvey "Gene" Barton. Ruth Helen Wheeler also married Berry Cecil Stafford & is buried at Garfield as a Stafford. So, I assume the Barton marriage came first. I believe these two Harvey M. Bartons are the same person, but don't have enough info on either to prove that. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. 1. [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] Land grants, bounty land, etc.
    2. John R. Porter
    3. The disposition of a land grant or bounty land warrant if the individual did not want to take up ownership depended on the time period and under what law the grant was made. Originally, the 1812 land bounties for service could only be claimed by the veteran receiving the grant. Later, the law changed so that such warrants could be sold or transferred. Often, such laws were made retroactive, leading to a patchwork of rights accorded to the veteran. Warrants and bounties for land in return for service to the government included land in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, and other areas depending on the war of service, the law in effect at a particular time, the length of time of service, and other factors. Later, this system became the homestead act, various forms of which included many or most of the western states and Alaska; "homesteaded" land did not require prior service to the government. The price to the veteran and the amount of land granted also varied with time. If a veteran did not exercise or sell a grant, it reverted to the government in some cases, ended up in large speculative parcels purchased by speculators, or were granted to someone else. Occasionally, there were conflicting grants for the same land. A useful read to explain these various laws and outcomes is in Greenwood's "The Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy." I have the 2nd edition, but there is one more recent. An interesting side note is that disloyalty to the government during the Civil War was considered grounds for revocation of veteran's rights, including land and pension. I have one case in my family in which a daughter, living in Illinois, claimed that her father in Arkansas was disloyal during the war, claimed the pension and land in his stead by default, and essentially denied a pension to her father while this was being investigated. Other family members claimed that she was just greedy, wanting all to herself. Her claim was not upheld, but her father died before the investigation was complete. Even if she had been correct, it was documented that she did not have any legal claim to either the pension or the land. John R. Porter j.porter@usip.edu

    1. [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] ??? about land grants
    2. I wonder if some of the people who were granted lands in faraway places may not have had the money or the ability to get to it. Does anyone know what happened to land when the grantee couldn't take possession? Were they able to sell the land or did it revert to the government? What if they got there and found out their land was in a swamp, too rocky to farm or already taken over by a squatter? What if you couldn't determine what land was yours (lightning destroyed the big oak tree or the river changed its course)? 3. Lanita, You may be looking at the date the government okayed the law to give the land away, not the actual time it was given. Arkansas isn't the easiest place to research, but I have found several relatives that have received land. One Civil War uncle who was from Iowa received land near Little Rock, AR in 1910 as a result of his service. That's a big gap of time. Nettles can be spelled many ways and I wish you luck. 3. Lanita, I'm pretty certain that the location of the land had nothing to do with the state in which the soldier served or died. Until 1842, the only lands available for purchase by bounty land warrants based on service in the War of 1812 were in the public domain in Illinois, Arkansas and Missouri. After 1842, public domain lands in other states became available. 3. More details about the Elam Barnes Cemetery, if anyone needs directions. Beth Subject: Re: [MODOUGLA] Elam Barnes Cemetery, Campbell Twp. Carol, According to Pat Carmichael's cemetery books, this is southwest of Ava and northeast of Rome. Her directions are: >From Ava, go south to Highway A and turn right on it. Go to the first road that turns to the right past Walnut Grove Church and Cemetery. Stay on this county road (straight at the crossroads) until it dead ends at red gate. You will need permission to go through the gate (it possibly will be locked). Go through the double gate to the pond. Turn to right of pond and follow road to wire gate past bunch of big round hay bales. You will have to go through 1 other gate before this one. You will have to walk the rest of the way. The cemetery is located to the left and down the hill from the hay bales. Cemetery is located on the old Watterson homestead. The cemetery is all grown up and not used anymore. PLEASE CALL CECIL HULL FOR PERMISSION AND HELP IN FINDING THE CEMETERY. Kristi

    3. History listers, I'm passing this along just in case any of you have family in this cemetery in Douglas Co., MO. Obviously, it hasn't seen a clean-up in a long time and has taken some doing to get permission. I have not personally been to this cemetery. Please note that if you want to make contact please do so directly to the Debbie Hall whose email is listed at the bottom. (someone else had posted the message for her, as she wasn't a lister of MODOUGLA) I know that there has been Barnes surname discussions on MO-OREGON-HISTORY before but don't have a clue whether they are connected to this cemetery name or not. Hopefully, the posting will help someone! Thanks for reading. Beth Message: 1> Date: Sat, 11 Aug 2007 02:06:56 GMT> From: "K.L. This is the cemetery where Randolph Lawrence is buried. There are many people buried in this cemetery. The cemetery is in really bad shape. The cleanup is very extensive. Cecil will not let them pile the brush. Everything has to be chipped and hauled away. The cost of the cleanup will be $3500. This may seem like alot but they will be there for at least five days.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />I am asking any one who is interested to donate money toward the clean up of the cemetery. We will be forming a cemetery committee at the reunion this year so that we can keep the cemetery in good shape for future generations. Please contact me if you are interested in helping. This is a slow time for Southern Construction, which is the company that will be doing the work. They have donated all their equipment for this job, we are j! ust paying for the men who are doing the work. This is a huge savings, and a very wonderful thing that Southern has agreed to do.
