I've forgotten how to get to the Oregon County Website that has census, family history, etc. Lanita, You've been so helpful in the past. I'm looking for information for PERKINS, RICHARD, who was one of the early settlers in southern Missouri. He settled in the Eleven Point River/Thomasville area. I need 1830 and 1840 Census for Wayne and Ripley County, Missouri. One account by R. G. D. Smith in the Howell County Gazette, 5 June, 1919, lists the first settlers as: PERKINS, RICHARD; HODGE, JOHN; PERRYHOUSE, JACOB; THOMAS, WILLIAM; Granddad HUDDLESTON and Wm. Smith, the great-grandfather of R. G. Smith. The account says they left Slaugherville, KY in 1812, went to Jackson, MS for 2 years, then in 1814 migrated on to what is now Thomasville, Mo in Oregon Co. I'm researching for another individual. Thanks, Doris Johnson
Can't connect. Thanks for the reply. Mack ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
Mack, my Millers is Karl, and Sophia who lived at Thomasville. He delivered the mail from Thomasville to Alton. They had a son who lived there also by the name of John. Thanks Fern
Thought so but I wanted to be sure! Any new developments that you have found? I have been working on the McBRAYER line which was the mother of John D. JUSTICE, hus of Sarah NETTLES JUSTICE. Lanita
Does your Miller include a RUTHA JANE MILLER that married ROSS HAND? Thanks, Mack ************************************** See what's new at http://www.aol.com
You all may already have this address but I had just been informed about it and really got excited. Thanks to Rhonda Johnson and the gatewayed messages from rootsweb. Beth (These citations were found at the Missouri Historical Newspaper Project http://newspapers.umsystem.edu/ ) Rhonda Johnson
Forgot to put this article with the other newspaper finding that I had kept my ancestor, Robert Harrison Brashear was involved with the orchards in the area but later than this. 15 Jan 1876 From Newspaper, the Phelps County New Era #12, pg 3 Local and Personal Apples are selling for seventyfive cents a bushel in Alton, Oregon Co., MO Will send that website, when I find my other email. I couldn't send it directly to the list from the site so it will take me a few minutes to find the website again but I do have it in my emails somewhere. Be back soon. Beth The Oregon County jail is located on the 3rd floor of the courthouse.
The news about the jail, reminded me I had come across this and had forgotten to share it. (obviously, had happened in Howell Co., MO but the court case had to be moved to Oregon Co., MO.) 22Jan1884 From Newspaper The Rolla News Era #9, pg 3 The DIXON NEWS is a little off on its Jeff Storts item. Jeff was indicted for shooting off his pistol in the vicinity of the courthouse, and it was this that he plead guilty to and was fined $5 and costs. He shot at prosecuting attorney Winninham, of Howell County, and hit Hurd instead. For this he was indicted for felonious assault and this case has been taken to Oregon Co. on a change of venue, with a bond of $500. Hurd the man shot has since died, but the papers in that section state that the shot he received was not the cause of his death. If you get things mixed up so often we shall begin to doubt whether you are true to the temperance principles you advocate. Since I didn't know any of the particulars about this story, it amused me about the obvious rivalry about reporting news by this newspaper. Anyone remember where the DIXON NEWS was published? Just curious! Beth The Oregon County jail is located on the 3rd floor of the courthouse. There were 6 inmates at the time. Supposedly, they intended to created a disturbance or wreck as much of the facility as possible. It seems some of them intententionally set the fire, which in turn created deadly smoke. The one that died was 17 years old, waiting trial for robbery, etc. The names of the others that are in a Springfield hospital have not been released, that I'm aware of. This isn't the first time something like this has happened. I'm concerned about all the valuable records stored in the courthouse. I've recently talked to some of the elected county officials about records being put on digital format. That will be considered in a meeting later this month. Doris Alton, MO

Doris, The Oregon Co. records have survived war and fire before, it would be a shame to lose them now. I hope they decide to make digital copies before something further happens. Thanks for keeping us informed. Let us know about the meeting. OMG! Is it Christmas in September? You have given me a gift I have looked for for more than 5 years! I have tried everything! And, of course, to complicate matters, family lore...like so many others...contains tales of Native American/Cherokee heritage. All I know is that Amanda C. BALLARD (known as Callie by living family) married William MANES in Howell Co, MO at age 18. I am guessing that perhaps I should investigate the Nodaway Co and Platte Co, MO a little more. THANK YOU for pointing me in another direction!! I did have the 1880 Fulton Co census...by that time she was married to William MANES. It didn't help me in regards to who her parents might be...the only clue it gave was that she was born in TN..I am guessing about 1860. The other problem I ran into is that she died when my ggrandmother was a young child. By 1900 she had passed away and the census lists her husband as a widow. Lanita...thank you SO MUCH for the time you took to investigate this. Sometimes you just need a fresh idea...another way to look at things. I am indebted and appreciative. -----Original Message----- From: mo-oregon-history-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mo-oregon-history-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lanita Sconce Smith Sent: Friday, September 07, 2007 9:01 PM To: mo-oregon-history@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] Amanda BALLARD Here are the possibles: 1870 Duty Twp, Lawrence Co., AR BALLARD Samuel, age 26, MO Elizabeth, age 25, NC Amanda, age 4, MO Jane, age 3, AR 1870 Washington Twp, Nodaway Co., MO BALLARD John W., age 51, NY Margaret, age 41, NY Mary Ellen, age 14, IL Louisa, age 12, MO Joseph, age 10, MO Amanda, age 8, MO Lincoln, age 6, MO Charles, age 4, MO George, age 2, MO 1870 Lee Twp, Platte Co., MO BALLARD Nancy, age 54, MO Isaac, age 22, MO Sarah, age 20, MO Daniel A., age 18, MO Robert, age 15, MO Amanda, age 11, MO John, age 10, MO William, age 4, MO 1870 Franklin Twp, Drew Co., AR BALLARD Carroll, age 38 NC Martha J., age 27, Miss [don't know if that's MO or MS] Walter E., age 10, " Carroll F., age 8, " Cara A., age 5, " Robbert L.M., age 2, AR Callie, age 6mo, AR I tried every spelling I could think of for the SURNAME, and the above are the only ones which pop up.
