Sarah Hinkle married James Johnson after Francis M. Hinkle died, divorced, left or disappeared between 1873 and 1876 and she is shown on the 1880 US Census: Ripley Co, MO, Union Twp. 11JUN1880 as living with James Johnson and their son Perry S. Johnson and 4 Hinkle children as well as a nephew and her grandfather Shadrach Nettles (77). On this census (1880), next door is Martha (Moore?) Johnson a widow and as I recall, two of her children. Best I can guess is that this is James's mother and siblings. My problem is this: 1) None of these people are shown on the 1870 US Census for this area. 2) No 1890 US Census for this area exists and I cannot find any of them - except Perry S. Johnson - on the 1900 or 1910 US Census. So, they appear only one time that I can find so far. I know better of course but this is my dilemma. Can anyone shed some light on this one? I missed out (by a few years) being around for the 1870 census, so can not give that personal account of what actually happened. (shucks) I will just rely on a comment which I read in a book at the R C Library. I wish there would have been more details, details, but...... "The 1870 Randolph County census was shown in only 4 townships due to the Carpet Bag rule. This rule prevented all the former townships from being staffed with officials the Yankees could trust." It would be great to know more, but this is enough info to allow us to know, at least in brief, why our 1870 Randolph Co census was never completed. I had wondererd for so long as to why only 4 townships were enumerated, but this pretty much solved the mystery for me. Hope this helps. Lanita, Randolph County Arkansas 1870 census list William Meriott age 55 and wife Matilda age 55 and son William age 15. They are residing in Roanoke Twp. He is listed as a carpenter. Walter Bellah age 32, wife Malinda age 32 , son Samuel 14, son Leonard 10, dau Rhoda 15, dau T A 2, and dau M L age 4. The family is listed in Roanoke Twp. Randolph Co 1870 census is incomplete. Only 4 townships were enumerated. (thanks to the carpetbaggers) You can only imagine how many folks did not get counted that census year and what a pain it has caused for so many Randolph County researchers. The enumerated townships were: Current River, Little Black, Demun and Roanoke. Well, things have calmed down at work, and so Im back on line during the day. I am wondering if there is anyone locally who are willing to go to the Alton courthouse and make copies of the indexes of the marriage books, and send to me? I would like to have more of the marriage listings, particularly after 1890 and would like to get them online.. Anybody want to take me up on this? Lanita
Hello, I get e-mails from people saying I have been doing research 20 or 30 years and long before computers. Also I hear how much money they have spent, and how many endless hours they have put in to there research. How many places they had to travel to and all such things to get there research.I think all should thank God as you were blessed with the time, money, health to do it all. I also stated long before computers I used to iron clothers for a lady to buy my roll of stamps 2 boxes of envelopes and if I was lucky a document of some kind.My day job has to support my 3 children. My family moved out here before I was born and alll the rest sayed in the south. A fire took all we had when I was a child and all of our elders in the family died when I was young except my mom who is also gone now. The wonder of who my family were and what they looked like is what started me on research. I have met people in all my family lines that have alot of old family pictures and documents and I have asked them to share at my cost or to just scan and send to me. I also get they don't have the health, time or something or they just don't return my e-mails. Dose this hurt my heart or make me mad of course it dose. But if I can save anyone some time, money or hurt feelings, then I have been blessed. Barbara eor@saber.net
Jan 1876, JOHNSON, James HINKLE, Sarah Just by chance she remarried after his death, I found these marriages in the Oregon Co. Marriage book listings for the years 1845-1890. In Nov 1887, a Sarah A. JOHNSON mar. John MARTIN. In Nov. 1885, a Sarah J. JOHNSON mar. Felix GRAVES. In Mar 1879 a Sarah Jane JOHNSON mar. John WARDW The only J. JOHNSON in the 1880 Oregon Co. Census is a J.F., with wife Sarah E... They have 5 children, though. The oldest is 16 years old [Newton]. There is a BEN JOHNSON, with wife, Sarah L..they have 7 children, including a step dau. whose last name is FARMER. The above John MARTIN with wife, Sarah, is found in 1900 Census [Oregon Co.].. they have one dau., Bessie, and have been mar. 12 years. The above Felix GRAVES is not listed in 1900 Oregon Co. Census and the same goes for John WARD. Hope this helps, Lanita

So much to do and so little time! Bet you've never heard that one! The last month has been filled with eradicating the Klez virus from my computers! What a battle which I have - I think - finally won but at great expense and much lost time. I use my computer network in our business as well as my various research hobbies. This virus damaged the operating systems on two of the main computers which required a complete re-format and re-install of windows and all programs and databases. Thankfully, I had made backups otherwise ALL would have been lost. It saddens me to think that there are nasty little people out there in cyberland who would use their obvious computer and technical talents to reek such havoc on total strangers! I am certain of one thing: there is a very special place in hell for these people! I need help finding my Johnson relatives from Doniphan, Ripley Co., MO. The last lead which I have that is more than a guess is on the 1880 US Census For James Johnson married to Sarah (Nettles). They had one son, Perry S (Samuel?) Johnson BUT there were several other children from Sarah's previous marriage to John Hinkle who died, divorced, left or disappeared sometime between 1873 and 1876, living in the household. I can't find any of this family after 1880! They just seem to disappear! James Johnson was about 18 and Sarah was 34 at the time of their marriage in January, 1876. The couple had an established farm and James's mother was living next door with two of James's siblings. I would dearly love to know the story behind this but so far all is speculation. I have found records of Perry S. Johnson who was on the 1900 US Census in the US Army located in Bataan Province, Philippians. In 1908, when Perry married Pansy Ann Tufts in Cumberland Co., ME he lists his parents as residing in St. Louis, MO BUT I have been unable to locate James and Sarah anywhere on the 1910 Census. Also, If James and Sarah were still together in 1908, I would suspect that they had had some more children together during the preceding 28 years BUT I can find no record of them anywhere. Any help on the genealogical problems would be very much appreciated! If any of you have this Klez virus my heart goes out to you. I would be happy to share with you the process of getting rid of it! Norton seems to be the best solution and very knowledgeable and helpful - for a price! Larry Johnson Clovis, CA

Well, first, I'm working on a bunch of old tin type photographs my Mother gave me (various of her McKinney ancestors). We have identified several, but a few remain in the "maybe ..... " category. They look in terrible condition, but are scanning in rather better than I expected, and with all the power of PhotoShop, I am able to get quite good digital images out of them. I'm being a little conservative in restoration because I don't want to loose any original artifacts. Its a little eerie zooming in on faces of people I never knew but are as close as two generations ago, from whom I am directly descended. They leap onto my screen with a warm greeting. Secondly, after years of frustrated conjecture and searching, I've made contact with someone who has given me REAL evidence of my great grandfather's birth date, place and first wife. Warren Newton Burnett was born in 1856 in Georgia (1880 census for Phelps County (MO), Meramec Township lists him and his first wife Catherine, with a 7-month-old son James Edmond who was my grandfather). At last, I've got some solid clues for further searching! Those of you who have faced brick walls for a long time will understand how excited I am about this. So, what has everyone else been up to? :-) One never knows...I have been struggling with my Gates for years...yet there is a supposedly "illustrious Gates researcher" who ignores all us "little guys" despite our nice letters. But guess what, much of her info has proven inaccurate or without merit the last 2 years or so. So the rest of us simply plod along....proving our info 1 fact at a time, so hang in there!
