    3. Subject: Re: [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] Roll Call to end Date: Sat, 4 Jan 2003 13:33:28 -0800 From: "Larry Johnson" <tuftz@attbi.com> To: <ozarkn@southwind.net> References: 1 Hi List and a Happy New Year! I am still working on my Johnson and Nettles families in the South Eastern Missouri Area. Any information is eagerly appreciated. What I have so far: 1876 Census for Ripley Co. shows Township 22 Range 1E James Johnson 18 - 21 3 horses, 8 cattle, 5 sheep, 26 hogs, 18 bush. wheat, 250 bush. corn, 100 lbs tobacco, 10 lbs wool, 110 gal. molasses Sarah Johnson 21 to 45 Mary F. Hinkle 10 - 18 Shadrack Hinkle under 10 Carter T. Hinkle under 10 William M. Hinkle under 10 I show buried at Elizabeth Cemetery (Possible son) Arche Johnson 9 Aug 1893 - 9 Dec 1894 son of J. W. and S. E. Johnson. 4 Graves marked by rocks are near this grave - unreadable. On the 1880 US Census, James Johnson is shown living next door to his mother Martha Johnson (widowed) and two of his siblings William and Martha A. Sarah Nettles first married Francis HINKLE, who was born in Missouri, probably in Ripley County near the Arkansas border. (This area became Oregon County in 1845.) Sarah was probably also born in this same area. Interestingly they were married in Randolph County, Arkansas which borders Oregon County to the south and their first child, Francis was born there as well. The family then moved back to Ripley County, MO sometime before the birth of their second son, Shadrach who was born in Ripley County, Missouri, probably in Doniphan Township. Francis HINKLE probably died sometime after 1873, when his youngest son William M. was born, but before 1876 when according to the 1876 Missouri State census Sarah was married to James JOHNSON (ref: 1876 MO Census - Ripley Co pg4 TWP No 22 North of range No.1 W - Line 76 thru 80). It is unlikely that he was still living and left the property to his wife Sarah since during that period females did not generally own land. 1880 US Census shows fb NC and mb KY 1880 USCensus Ripley Co. He probably traveled west with his family as a young man during the great migrations out of Tennessee and Kentucky after Missouri became a state in 1821 and the farming land there was cheap and plentiful. He met and married Martha Moore in Doniphan, Ripley County Missouri and while they had a son, Richard, when she was 15 and he was 19, they weren't married until January 16, 1851 according to the marriage book in Ripley County, which coincides with the birth of their second son Henry. They would have been 25 and 21 respectively at that time. James Johnson's father was Samuel Johnson and his mother was Martha Johnson as set out below. I have no other proof of this except the coincidence of census data, ages and location. 1860 US Census, Oregon Co., Jobe Twp, MO, pg 160 - 23 June 1860 Johnson, Samuel 34 TN (1826) Martha 30 KY (1830) Richard 15 MO (1845) Henry 9 MO (1851) Winnie 7 MO (1853) James 3 MO (1857) William 6mo MO (1859) Neither Samuel nor wife, Martha, and family are listed in the 1870 Oregon Co. Census. No JOHNSONS listed in 1850 Oregon Co., MO Census.

    3. One last thing on that virus.... If you see that an email with an attachment is sent by me... let me repeat.. I DID NOT SEND ANYTHING.. yes, I know my address is there.. it's because of the virus faking my address.. Our own Ron Burnett seemed to explain it better than I ever could... SO: "You probably already know this, but the insiduous thing about the Klez virus and variants is that it fakes 'from' addresses by using those stored on the infected computer (in e-mail queues, folders and/or address book) at random. Thus, whilst you yourself are using a Mac, any of your correspondents who are using a PC who get the virus AND have your address stored anywhere on their computer can emit a message that looks as if it is coming from you." I say, let's change and enforce the laws more forcefully and get these crooked people and cause them to pay a heavy penalty for doing these things!! Lanita

    2. I forgot RICE I am researching the following families in Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas: UPSHAW, BAKER, STUBBLEFIELD, ROBINETT, TUCKER, CONDRAY, ODELL, SPRATLEY, MORRIS (Kentucky), CATES, and a bunch more. I am particularly interested in learning about a woman named Ailsey Robinett, born probably about 1902. She was the daughter of Joseph Hammett Robinett and Samantha Upshaw (my great-aunt). They lived in or near Doniphan. I don't know who she married, but I have a photo of her with two sons. Do any of you find her in any of your reference material?

    3. Christina, I got my 1880 information from familysearch.com. They have the entire 1880 census online. It's wonderful because they have an excelllent search engine. For earlier and later Indiana information, I used some Rootsweb lists - namely IN Census look-up and individual county lists. Go to Rootsweb.com, scroll down to "mailing lists", click on "index" and then IN. There are quite a few lists. The people are very helpful, like this list. Hope this helps. 3. I've had a request for some of the new people, to instruct on how to post a Roll Call... Actually, it's very simple and can be as detailed or non as you want.. we prefer to keep it fairly short, here are just 2 ways to post: 1] just surnames: DETHROW, BENNETT, COUCH, etc... OR 2] in discript.. I'm searching for the burial site of Linny COUCH STOGSDILL, died in Oregon Co., MO by 1900. Also need info on adoptive parents of Mary Parthena RIMMER, who was adopted by Ben and Mandy COUCH by 1880 in Oregon Co. ABOVE ALL: Don't worry if you do it "wrong" on this list.. we don't yell or CORRECT ANYBODY on this list for however they post their roll call!! Hope this helps, Lanita List Manager
