You all gonna get a kick out of this one... LOL Letter Home From the Hillbilly in the Army Dear Ma and Pa: Am well. Hope you are. Tell brother Walt and brother Elmer the Army beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before maybe all the places are filled. I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 5 a.m., but am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot and shine some things -- no hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. Men got to shave, but it ain't bad, they git warm water. Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc. but kinda weak on chops, potatoes, beef, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie, and regular food. But tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit between two city boys tha! t live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you till noon, when you get fed again. It aint no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on "route marches," which, the Sgt. says, are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so it is not my place to tell him different. A "route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys all get sore feet and we ride back in trucks. The country is nice, but awful flat. The Sgt. is like a schoolteacher. He nags some. The Capt. is like the school board. Colonels and Generals just ride around and frown. They don't bother us none. This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep gettin medals for shootin. I don't know why. The bull's-eye is near as big as a chipmunk and don't move. And it ain't shooting back, like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lay there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load! your own cartridges. They come in boxes. Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join up before other fellows get onto this setup and come stampeding in. Yore lovin daughter, Gail --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I know my great grandparents, Monroe Archy Gilbert (M.A. Gilbert) and Mahala (Presley)England were married but can't find a record. They would have been married between about 1890 - 1894 - possibly in one of the Southern MO counties, but more than likely in one of the North Central/East Arkansas counties. They lived in Newark, Ark. which is near Batesville, ARk. (Independence County) when my grandmother was born in Nov. 1894 or 95. Mahala had lived in Oregon and Howell Counties when she was married to her first husband, Joel W. England. Thanks. Sure hope I find this marriage record some day !! Janice (near St. Louis)

Good Evening, You might also find this little link useful: http://www.oregoncountyhistory.net/lookups/index.php N
Since we have new members on our list, I wonder if it might be beneficial if we list the resources that we have that we are willing to do lookups in. And, lets remember our manners.. NO ONE likes to do lookups if it is not followed by a THANK YOU, or followed by an insistence [or order] to do more lookups. That's how people get burned out!!! So, lets remember our manners!! I have the Oregon Co., MO Census for 1850-1880,1900-1920 The Oregon Co. History Book Cemeteries of Oregon County, Missouri Marriage Listings for the years 1845-1890 for Oregon Co., MO I am also connected to many families in the area. Check out those at my website: www.lanitasloft.com I am also going to the library tomorrow, and will do lookups in the roster books for both armies of the Civil War. If you need something, please provide the first name, middle initial or name if you know it, and surname. You will also need to tell me what state you think he enlisted, and which army. I will NOT do a lookup for all surnames. Welcome to all newcomers.. Now, lets make this week one to help one another. Lanita List Manager

Mary -- There is a John A. Arnold listed in the Pine Lawn Cem., Shannon County that is younger than you mention. He was born 1873 and died 1947. His wife is Margaret D. born 1875 and died 1961. Thought that they might connect somewhere. Sorry, I don't have any Fulton County records.
