    3. John, Do you belong to the Oregon county, Missouri List and do you go to their web site? I think some of your information may be their. Joan Hi Joan, Thanks very much for responding and your offer to help. I am not a subscriber to Ancestry.com, although I do have a subscription to on-line U.S. census reports. In order to give you a little background, I am in the process of gathering information for a family history book I plan to write on the old pioneer, John Nichols and all of his descendants. He left Virginia and settled in Barren Co., Ky. about 1812. John and his wife had 13 children, one of whom was George W. Nichols, my great-great-grandfather. George W. Nichols had three daughters who married three brothers in the 1860's in Barren Co., all sons of Hiram W. Martin. Then in the 1880's, two of these brothers migrated to West Plains, Mo. They were Joseph Henry Martin, a carpenter and Prysbyterian minister, with his wife, Elizabeth (Nichols) Martin, and James R. Martin, a brick mason, and his wife, Parthenia (Nichols) Martin. I suspect that they moved to West Plains at that particular time to take advantage of the bui! lding boom going on after the Civil War. I understand that the town was totally destroyed, burned to the ground, by guerillas in 1863. Just about everything I know about these two families has been the result of tracing their movements from the 1880 census for Barren Co., Ky. to the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census reports for West Plains, Mo. I also have data from the Oak Lawn Cemetery in West Plains. My hope is to eventually locate living descendants, but the main problem I'm facing now is that I do not know the married names of many of the Martin daughters. Most of those marriages would have taken place between 1920 and 1945. Following is a list of the individuals that I know of who comprise the two Martin families: Joseph Henry Martin (1841-1906) his wife, Elizabeth (Nichols) Martin (1840-1922) their daughter, Carrie (Martin) Spencer (1870-1902) her husband, John H. Spencer (1871- ? ) James R. Martin (1848-1930) his wife, Parthenia (Nichols) Martin (1856-1932) their son, Joseph M. Martin (1876-1963) his wife, Marie C. Martin (1877-1974) their children: Henrietta Martin (b.abt.1902) Robert Edward Martin (1903-1927) Florence E. Martin (b.abt.1908) Frances (Martin) LeFever (1908-1986) her husband, Fred LeFever, Sr. (1903-1958) Mildred Martin (b.abt.1912) Joe Martin, Jr. (1917- ? ) his wife, Mary F. Martin (1922- ? ) Mary B. Martin (b.abt.1921) their other son, George W. Martin (1877-1956) his wife (1) Ollie Martin (1884-1910-) his wife (2) Josephine Martin (1897- ? ) Thanks again for your offer of help. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Do you know of anyone living in West Plains that would be able to check Howell Co. marriages for the time period 1920-1945? 2. Jon Huffman
    3. Hi Folks, Does anyone have marriage information from Howell Co. for the years 1920 - 1945? I understand that there is a publication by the West Plains Genealogical Society that covers marriages from 1922 thru 1942. I am trying to locate the marriage dates and spouse names of five daughters of Joseph M. Martin and his wife, Marie, all born in West Plains, Mo. The individuals are Henrietta Martin (b.abt.1902), Florence E. Martin (b.abt.1905), Frances E. Martin (1908-1986), Mildred Martin (b.abt.1912) and Mary B. Martin (b.abt.1921). There was also a son, Joe Martin, Jr. (b.1917), who married Mary F. ?, and I would like to know that date as well. Thanks from a new subscriber. Jon Huffman johnlau@bellsouth.net

    3. Hello Everyone, Just had an email from Lanita asking me to post something soooo Here we go. Tell us about your most Elusive` Ancestor, what steps you took to` find him/her. Everyone has at least one!!!! Let us hear from you. Here is what I am talking about......   MY ELUSIVE ANCESTOR I went searching for an ancestor. I cannot find him still.  He moved around from place to place and did not leave a will.  He married where a courthouse burned. He mended all his fences.  He avoided any man who came to take the U.S. Census.  He always kept his luggage packed, this man who had no fame.  And every 20 years or so, this rascal changed his name.  His parents came from Europe. They should be upon some list  Of passengers to U.S.A., but somehow they got missed.  And no one else in this world is searching for this man.  So, I play geneasolitaire to find him if I can.  I'm told he's buried in a plot, with tombstone he was blessed; But the weather took engraving, and some vandals took the rest.  He died before the county clerks decided to keep records.  No Family Bible has emerged, in spite of all my efforts.  To top it off this ancestor, who caused me many groans,  Just to give me one more pain, betrothed a girl named JONES.    author unknown OK MO-OREGON LISTERS...."Lets Rock and Roll" How's that Lanita??? 3. This was sent to me.. had to send to you!! Enjoy! Lanita The public ceremony in which your distinguished ancestor participated and at which the platform collapsed under him turned out to be a hanging. *When at last after much hard work, you have solved the mystery you have been working on for two years, your aunt says, "I could have told you that." *Your grandmother's maiden name that you have searched for for four years was on a letter in a box in the attic all the time. *You never asked your father about his family when he was alive because you were not interested in genealogy then. *The will you need is in the safe on board the Titanic. *Copies of old newspapers have holes occurring only on the surnames. *John, son of Thomas, the immigrant whom your relatives claim as the family progenitor, died on board ship at the age of 10. *Your great grandfather's newspaper obituary states that he died leaving no issue of record. *The keeper of the vital records you need has just been insulted by another genealogist. *The relative who had all the family photographs gave them all to her daughter who has no interest in genealogy and no inclination to share.  *The only record you find for your great grandfather is that his property was sold at a sheriff's sale for insolvency.  *The one document that would supply the missing link in your dead-end line has been lost due to fire, flood or war. *The town clerk to whom you wrote for the information sends you a long handwritten letter which is totally illegible. * The spelling of your European ancestor's name bears no relationship to its current spelling or pronounciation. Darlene Baker 50 Million Historical Documents Hit Web Fri Apr 4, 2:31 PM ET Add Technology - AP to My Yahoo! By EUN-KYUNG KIM, Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON - Researchers, genealogists and the plain curious can now use the Internet to check more than 50 million historical records at the National Archives, from Civil War battles to family immigration files. Before the system became available, people had to either visit the Archives and spend hours combing through documents or request the files by phone and pay to have them mailed. "Now, people can pull these electronic records at their own convenience," said Michael Carlson, electronic and special media records director for the archives. "It's totally self-service from your desktop." The records available on the database system represent a small fraction of the archive's electronic holdings. They were selected because of their analytical and statistical nature — most deal with information that easily can be looked up based on specific names, dates, organizations, cities or states. For instance, someone wanting to research a great-grandfather who immigrated to the United States in the 19th century can choose the series of records listed under "immigrants," enter the relative's name and learn on what ship he traveled, the occupation he claimed prior to leaving, the date he arrived in New York, and the country from which he left, among other details. "It can be another stop in creating your family tree and understanding what happened and when," said Michael Kurtz, assistant archivist for records services. Carlson said he expects the service will be popular with veterans in particular because of all the information related to military action, casualties and POWs. The records in the new system "aren't a revelation in information, but is it helpful? Absolutely," said American Legion spokesman John Peterson after checking out the Web site. "A lot of people active with the POW/MIA issue complain the government doesn't release enough documents about people who are still missing, so almost anything they give out is good in our eyes," he said. Kristine Minami, a spokeswoman for the Japanese American Citizens League, said getting easy access to government records will provide "a lot of validation" to Japanese Americans who were sent to internment camps during World War II. The database draws from the records of 20 federal agencies. Most of the information was created by the agencies to suit their own program needs, without any thought to its historical significance. Because of that, some records have typographical errors like misspelled names or an inaccurate dates. National Archives officials did not correct any of the information to preserve the records' integrity. Shirley Langdon Wilcox, former president of the National Genealogical Society, called the new system an "extremely useful and exciting" tool. "This certainly gives you enough of an idea of what might be available to you so you know what to weed out before taking a trip somewhere," she said. "Anytime you have a tool that can make yourself better prepared before you go to the Archives or library, it's worthwhile. You don't end up wasting an hour or two looking at whether they have something, because you've done your homework.
