Lanita - That is a great question, not just to make us think of what we value most (outside of our family's safety) but it may cause someone to think of ways to protect or safeguard artifacts, pictures, etc that we treasure. I may look into a big fireproof safe. Another problem that I have, is that my "binders" with research, pictures and writings are too bulky to carry out in an emergency. It's time to consolidate them onto disks but that is a monumental and laborious job. One of those, "come early next spring" projects.
Family safety would be first and foremost, but as far material posessions or treasures it would be family pictures from many, many years back and a cookie jar handed down from my husbands grandmother, Grace Pratt Tucker. It is nothing expensive, but is truly a treasure and very valuable in our sight. I would want to protect it with all that is within me so as to hand it down to our son, someday. I'm afraid that during a real emergency, none of these wonderful heirlooms would even enter my mind! My first thoughts would be to see my family to safety. My sister called me last night and she rode out the tornado in Jackson, MO night before last. She said she couldn't tell if it lasted 5 seconds, 5 minutes, or 5 hours - it's just like you're suspended in space. She was very lucky - the buildings across the street from her were destroyed and it hopped her building and hit the parking lot behind it. About 20 cars were destroyed (including hers). She just feels lucky to be ALIVE. So, as I said, if a real disaster stuck, SAFETY first. I would mourn the loss of my treasures later. Lanita,, That is an easy question!!!! A bowl that I have always loved passed down to me from my grandmother, it wasn't expensive ( I don't think) but it always held her special noodles,(homeade) with a tomato sauce that were wonderful, at all the family dinners. Recently, I had the house painted and I put it in my bureau among my clothes so it wouldn't get broken, leaving my china unprotected. Crazy, but I only thought of the bowl. Claudia J.Williams

No doubt here...my grandmother's and aunts quilts and my research. Be careful with your baby books though Lanita...as a former pro photographer I know the dangers of what a basement can do to photos. Why not scan all photos to disk and store in an area that is safe and dry with some silica gel to protect the disks also? I still vividly remember my childhood in MI and the tornados...I remember one particular evening standing on the porch with my father as 3 tornados swirled above us and within moments destroyed the whole town of Coldwater MI, only a very few miles away. The devastation and twigs and straw driven through tree trunks will always be with me. Living in Memphis tested my strength and intolerance for storms each year...MS was no better, AZ may be hot and dry...and we have our microbursts that do lots of damage...but tornados are few and far between, thank the Lord! Hi Are you all as worried about Lanita as I am? She lives in Kansas City where the tornadoes hit last evening. I just got home from up north Michigan and still have not heard from her. Has anyone had a message from her? Please post any information that you might have. Her cousin Carolyn
Okay ya'll, Let's remember our history... Revolutionary War was in the mid 1700's... Declaration of Independence was signed July 4, 1776! SO.... MO or AR were not even states in the Revolutionary War!! So, if you have asked for a lookup for MO or AR, there's no way!!! If you want a lookup and know a state, it would have to be one of the original 13 states. Missouri didn't become a state until 1821. Lanita I'm always late. My ancestors arrived on the JUNE flower.
I should have added to my previous email when I offered to do lookups on the Rev. War, that if you have a perspective soldier I need to look up for you that might have served in the Rev. War, PLEASE.....I will need to know FIRST NAMES as well... To ask for all of a particular surname could take pages of copying for each surname. Hope you understand! Lanita I'm always late. My ancestors arrived on the JUNE flower.
Thought I would mention that I have a couple of Rev. War books at my library that lists soldiers. Some are from the Pension files and have quite a few details for each soldier, including children, soldier's birth and death date, wives [some include maiden names], and residence when enlisted. If you need me to check any out for you, please let me know. I am finding myself going to the library once a week to explore this 'new' aspect of genealogy. Hope this helps, Lanita Sconce Miller ps: I am so proud of myself today.. I have all of my papers filed, and my work area is neat, tidy and organized... QUICK, I need to take a picture.. no telling WHEN the area will look this good again!! Any family tree produces some lemons, some nuts and a few bad apples.
Carolyn - I have several resources for Ripley County. Can you give me some specifics? I am still searching for information on my gr grandfather Alanson W. Barnes, born 1834 somewhere in NY state. I have been unable to learn where Alanson was born in NY state, or who his parents were. There was another Alanson Barnes in Lewis Co NY in the 1850 Federal census. This Alanson was a lawyer and I have found no connection to my Alanson. Alanson married Harriett Briggs, 1867 in Steele Co MN. Alanson died 1909 in Oregon Co MO. Hettie died 1943 in Oregon Co MO, Hettie's death cert states that she was 102 years at her death. Both are buried in Rover cemetery, Oregon Co MO. Marriage record for my gr grandparents states that Hettie's surname at time of marriage was Briggs. All records indicate that Alanson was indeed born in NY. However some records, for example census records for his children, show Alanson's birthplace as WI and his wife Harriett as being born in MI. My immediate family believed that Harriett's (Hettie) was born in PA and that her suname was Moore. My first record of Alanson is his marriage record. According to family records as well as the Federal census their first 3 children were born somewhere in MO after 1870. About 1875 they return to Steele Co MN where I found them on the 1880 census. They had 4 children born during the approximate 9-10 years they remained in MN. It was in the 1880 census that Alanson's brother Edwin Barnes is mentioned. It states that Edwin too was born in NY about 1882. He was living in Alanson's household, single and working as a farm laborer By 1885 they had removed MN to Oregon Co MO where my grandfather was born. They remained in Douglas and Oregon Co area of MO for the rest of their lives. I would be so grateful for any information on this Barnes line. Gava, Thanks for the help. The correct spelling of the name is MARIOTT but may also be spelled MERIT.. Trying to find a needle in a haystack! Thanks for the help! Lanita I'm always late. My ancestors arrived on the JUNE flower.
I have a copy of the 1830 & 1840 Lawrence Co. AR Census, reproduced from Microfilm and many tax record books. There is no James Merritt (or other Merritt) found in the 1830 Lawrence County AR Census. The 1840 lists a Silas Merritt in Lebanon Twp, Lawrence Co. AR Male betw 20-30, female betw 20-30 and one child under 5. This is the only Merritt listed for 1940. In the 1840 Randolph Co. AR, Dumand/Demand (Demun) Twp. census there is a James Merrell listed. One male under 5, one male 5-10, one male 20-30; one female uner 5, one female 5-10 and one female 20-30. A James Merrl is in the Demun Twp. 1840 Randolph Co. AR Personal Property tax record and there is a James Merrel shown in the 1841 Randolph Co. AR Personal Property Tax records in Demun Twp. He is also shown as James Merrel in the 1842 Demun Personal Property Tax List. This person is listed as a slave holder and owning horses and mares. Is it possible the name was misspelled? There is a James Marridery in 1833 in Cache & Languil Twp. Tax role listing for Lawrence Co. There is James Merriday on the 1834 Territorial and County Tax role in Cache & Languil Townships listing for Lawrence Co, also. There is a note saying the name is spelled differently in different years. Good Luck, Gava

Hi Lanita, I walked through the 1830 U.S. Federal Census Arkansas Lawrence County, I found no James Merritt. The 1830 census at Ancestry does have an index but it also shows hits from the recontructed census. These you can tell by the year. Both of your hits show 1835 and 1836 as the date, they can either be from tax lists or in the case of the 1835 hit probably a Arkansas state census?
