I have not had experience with all of the programs and am not qualified to rate them but I once considered changing away from Family Tree Maker and found the transition more than I wanted to deal with. In other words, will the new software, whatever you may be interested in translate from the old. If you must start from scratch, that is not an issue. Some people I know have merely transferred their old hard drive to another computer and ran two hard. That way, you don't lose the old and have it at your fingertips, so to speak. Larry Wyatt recently fired up a new program and did a ton of research. Maybe he will see this and respond. ----- Original Message ----- From: "lanita miller" <ozarkn@southwind.net> To: <MO-OREGON-HISTORY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 27, 2003 5:37 PM Subject: [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] Software and computer > > From: "Regena Lally" <jrl91@worldnet.att.net> > Date: Fri Jun 27, 2003 2:17:28 PM US/Central > To: "lanita miller" <ozarkn@southwind.net> > Subject: Re: [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] Genealogy programs...pros and cons > > Hi Lanita and everyone. Gina, Welcome back!! What kind of computer do you have? I am not familiar with "PAF system". Lanita I'm always late. My ancestors arrived on the JUNE flower.
Hello to my favorite list... Some time ago my old computer died, and it took with it my PAF system. I think much of my data may be retrievable by disk, but it is such a pain getting to it. Before do so I would like to make a decision about a new program. PAF was a good program, and now upgrades can be downloaded free. However it was a bit cumbersome to use. Especially after the death, re-marriage and the 2nd family of children came along. It took me a long while to learn that part, and now have forgotten what I learned. I will replace my program, but would like the opinion of those on the list. Here are my priorities... 1. Ease of use 2. Cost 3. Comprehensive program 4. Ability to print out new and up dated info on group sheets, etc. easily 5. Now that I am finding old photos, perhaps a way to include them 6. Since I am also a quilter...the thought in the back of my mind is...can this program assist me in a family memory quilt with transferred photos? Open to any and all thoughts and suggestions. Well, gang.. I finally made it to Robberson Prairie Cemetery in Greene Co., MO, and have pictures of NANCY WHITE TAYLOR's stone [mother of John D. TAYLOR]. Have also got pics of some of the JUSTICE and TAYLOR stones, so if you need them, email me and I will send you a scanned copy. I also have 2 good pics of John D. JUSTICE and Sarah NETTLES stones in Walnut Grove in Randolph Co., as well as pics of John Miles HAYS and Margaret "Nettie" JUSTICE [bur. at Garfield]. If you need any of these, let me know! Hope this helps, Lanita Sconce Miller Any family tree produces some lemons, some nuts and a few bad apples.
I now have my pics back and have scanned tombstone pics of the above couple at Yadkin Cem. If you wish a copy, please email me privately. Hope this helps, Lanita Sconce Miller Any family tree produces some lemons, some nuts and a few bad apples.
Carolyn, You all are like a breath of fresh air to those of us who are met many times with rudeness, indifference, and just plain coldness. I will be back many more times! It is WE who research the area, who THANK YOU!!! We had been told by Betty Tucker and Carol Thompson just how great you all are.. We were afraid to believe that there was, in fact, courthouse dream team!! We would all like to take you home with us so that you can show others how classy, courteous, and just plain friendly a courthouse staff can be, in the midst of their daily work. THANK YOU!!!! Does anyone have any knowledge of Nova Jane ARCHER who married William Shelton ALLEN 1859 in Oregon Co. MO. I am wondering who her family was and/or if anyone has any knowledge of a Berry ARCHER. William Shelton ALLEN's parents were William ALLEN & Elizabeth "Betsy" Stubblefield. Thanks for any help you might be able to give. Carolyn Bates Krodell Fayetteville, AR
Lanita, perhaps you have been posting the Buster name all along but I just now noticed it. I have a marriage certificate for John Buster to Minerva Gillespie in Lawrence Co., AR on 15 Oct 1849. They had a son, John Morgan Buster, b. 11 Aug 1856 in Walnut Ridge, Lawrence, AR, d. 25 Aug 1927 in Walnut Ridge. I just wonder if there is a connection to the Buster you are looking for. I haven't connected Minerva to my Lawrence Co. Gillespies yet but my dad said the Busters were related. In looking over the probate papers that I found for Lott DAVIS, and the marriage license I found for Mariah DAVIS BUSTER WRENFROW to Peter PRINCE, it looks like I have failed to get a copy of the marriage license for her to the BUSTER as well as to WRENFROW Does anyone have either of these? Lanita I'm always late. My ancestors arrived on the JUNE flower.
Okay, here's what I found at Pokey on BELLAH: Samuel BELLAH's probate papers [who mar. Rintha HUDSON]. His son, Walter [my gggrandfather] was administrator... I learned: 1. Samuel BELLAH, died by Mar 3, 1867 in Randolph Co., AR... 2. Rintha HUDSON BELLAH died by Apr 1867 3. His probate was filed 19 Apr 1867 in Randolph Co.,AR 4. One document was under Samuel BELLOWs file and not BELLAH... still had the son, Walter BELLOWs, appointed administrator.. still same time frame If you need me to scan and send these papers to you, let me know. Lanita I'm always late. My ancestors arrived on the JUNE flower.
Yepm now that I know where to find Pokey, I'll be back.... probably next year! Will also head for Powhatten as well.. Our time was too short! Lanita I'm always late. My ancestors arrived on the JUNE flower.
Lanita, That was a most delightful and entertaining story of your visit to Mo and AR. Certainly glad you shared it with the list. I could just picture you in each turn to Yadkin. Billie
For all interested, I ran across the marriage license of JOHN GUY to Mary ARNOLD [1877].. If anyone wants this, please let me know. I am still trying to rebuild my address book so many addresses have been lost after the virus. Lanita I'm always late. My ancestors arrived on the JUNE flower.
Hi Lanita, It was so very nice to meet you!! I am so thrilled that you had such a successful visit to Randolph County. Those ladies at the County Clerk's office are just super great in helping those that come into their office. They don't only help, they really do listen to what you have to say!! I just wish that I could say that about all such places that I have been. Mrs Mock and her staff are always willing to go that extra mile to help in any way they can (I think it is called southern hospitality!) and as a result their reputation is becoming known far and wide. I have heard lots of praise on their behalf and I never fail to let them know what folks are saying. Their efforts are truly appreciated by many! So gald I got to meet and hopefully you will return sometime soon and we can have a longer visit. Now that you know how much R C has to offer in the line of research, I think you will be back soon. I will try to find out about the original gate at Bellah Cemetery. Someone must surely know. If I have to go to the nursing home and talk to Mrs Wrenfrow, I will. Take care. I also reseached in Alton's new library as well as the courthouse, and Eminence's courthouse and Winona's library. I have learned a few things about the area that might be of interest to other researchers: 1. The new Alton library is WONDERFUL!!! If you do go back, be sure to spend an afternoon there. Janice Richardson [full time librarian] and our own Doris Johnson [volunteer] are GREAT with helping and explaining the new system, and such. 2. The Winona library is in an old building in downtown Winona, and they are in the midst of doing inventory for their NEW library.. They only have 3 volunteers so the library is only open 1:30pm to 3:30pm, M-F.. lots of info there including some books with obits, so check it out. I found several obits that I didn't have. They also have census books that they are selling as well as other info. 3. I had to go to my SCONCE reunion yesterday to find this bit out.... there was an older gentlemen that saved ALL of the old obits before any funeral homes were in Eminence. [He has since passed]... He donated his books to Duncan Funeral Home, so there is a DEFINITE possibility that those obits that you didn't think was possible being in existence, just MIGHT be at Duncans. I personally am going to check it out for some older ones I need. 4. If you have never gone to a courthouse before for research, do NOT make Pocahontas the first one you've ever gone to!!!!!!! They will spoil you rotten with helpfulness, kindness, and just wonderful attitudes for the family researcher. I couldn't believe that 3 of them got up from their work and VOLUNTEERED with not a scowl on their face or attitude, to look up and make the copies of the marriage records I needed.. There were several, and I was just overwhelmed by their willingness to help. They were nice, thoughtful, willing to help... like a breath of fresh air! They also were kind to my father, who thought he needed to tell them who, what, when and where of what he remembered many years ago... They were kind and patient with him, and when we left, I slipped back in and thanked them, and apologized for my father for disturbing them.. they 'poo pooed' the idea that he was bothering them, [even when I knew that wasn't true], and was just so wonderful. I wish we could CLONE those women and put them in every courthouse in every office in the nation.. how much better we would be as researchers!!! 5. I also found a GOB of documentation for the DAVIS, STUBBLEFIELD, PRINCE, BELLAH and MARIOTT families. Some of you may already have them, but if you are connected to these, stay tuned. I will post online what I found, and if you don't have the documents, I will scan and send to you privately after you let me know what you need. 6. I also found a couple of documents for my John D. JUSTICE... I have already scanned and sent to Carolyn Boone, but if you need them, let me know.. I found the marriage license for his 2nd marriage, as well as STUMBLING across his signature in another person's file. [the deceased owed my John D. JUSTICE money, and John D. JUSTICE signed a note saying as such.. Who would have thought that I would have found a signature of my ggggrandfather anywhere!!! 7. I also came home to an envelope of photocopies of the BIBLE RECORDS for my Jesse M. TAYLOR and Betsy JUSTICE. So, if you are connected to these, let me know, and I will send you scanned copies of the info. I will tell you about my trip to Yadkin in the next email...what a trip!! Lanita I'm always late. Some of you who have done research in the country for those hard to find cemeteries will identify with my trip to Yadkin, so thought I'd share.. and for you locals, try not to laugh too hard at this tourist!!! I have only been to Yadkin Cemetery in Randolph Co., AR, a couple of times.. and never by myself to find the way.. My dad had been many times and always was along to tell me which way I needed to go... But, this time, I was by myself...no need to fear though, my dad had made me a map [from memory], and among his main instructions was the order to just STAY ON THE MAIN ROAD... I was excited about going with the hopes of finding the graves of my ggggrandparents on the MARIOTT side for the first time, and perhaps clean their stones, places flowers, and do all the great things we researchers love to do..... [and by the way, Rosemary and David Case have the BEST cottages for the privacy that one needs in Alton... just wonderful country cottages with all the comforts of home in Alton. They were only $35 a night!]... I woke up that morning and looked at the clock and THOUGHT it said, 6:30.. I knew that it was forecasted to get warm [uhhhhh, HOT] that day, and I wanted to get down there early to have plenty of time to hunt, clean, and really get acquainted with the cemetery.. I knew that it would take me about 40 min, so I thought 6:30 was not unreasonable for me to get up [even on vacation.. and I am NOT a morning person] to get on down to Arkansas. Got up, and after all the necessary needs taken care of, I look at the kitchen stove clock and it says 6AM... I thought, "well, they haven't reset the clock for daylight savings time".. I went back in to the bedroom and sure enough, I had misread the clock... I had gotten up at 5:30 [I don't even have a 5:30 on my clock at home!!] it was indeed 6 AM!! But, I was wide awake, and determined to get down there before 8 am, so just giggle at myself, and went out the door... It was 6:15 am. NOW, once one goes down to Myrtle, and takes the country road from Myrtle, it is suppose to be 30-40 min drive.. My dad had drawn the map [from memory] and I was buzzing [er.. bumping] right along with no trouble... UNTIL....I had already discovered that the main road is no longer looking like the main road... ALL of the roads have been widen, graded, and look like the main road!! Now, I come to a place that had 3 ways of going.. one had the sign that said RING SCHOOL with an arrow pointing to my right.. Now, Dad had told me that whatever I was to do, I was to: 1. STAY ON THE MAIN ROAD [what main road!!] 2. GO THE OPPOSITE OF RING SCHOOL.. So, I go left, the opposite of Ring School, .. got down a ways, and it wasn't looking like his map.. here was another Y section, and he didn't have that on his map.. ,hmmm, wonder if I am suppose to use the left road.. the next turn on his map says left.. so, I'll try it...... it looks like the main road..so I take it.. at least it was a good road to start with.....He had done a good job up to that point, but I decide that this turn wasn't it cause I was really going back in the woods with road that hadn't seen a road grader in years... so I turn around and go back up and take the other road... hmm, this doesn't look good either.., nothing is coming up like his map...wait.. there's a logging crew....I'll stop and ask.... "Pardon me, could you tell me where Bellah Cemetery is?"..... the confused logger goes to the worker on the machine.... 'she's looking for Bellah Cemetery.. .do you know where it is?"... "NOPE, never heard of it"...... {Okay, I won't panic.].... "How about Yadkin Cemetery?"... NOPE, never heard of it.. we're from Doniphan, [MO] and not from around here.. you'd better go up at that house up there [there's a house?????] they might know!".. OKAY, thanks so much.... [can't believe I didn't see the house as I grumble to myself....].. I drive up to the house... it is 7:30am.... I wake this poor older woman up, and after apologizing for bothering her... ask my same 2 questions.. where's Bellah, and where's Yadkin......"Well, honey, I've only been over to Yadkin one time.. .and I think it's somewhere over THATA Way....[-and she points the opposite direction of what I need to go]... and honey, whatever you do, just stay to the RIGHT.... OKAY, STAY TO THE RIGHT... I do my best to follow her instructions and well, I stay to the right, and make a giant circle around only to 'rediscover' that logging crew again.... THIS IS RIDICULOUS!! I drive a little ways... and wait, There's a gentleman working in his garden along one of the roads..... so I stop again.. tell me sir, could you tell me where Bellah or Yadkin Cemeteries are?... "Gee, I don't know... never heard of them... I don't live around here [okay, then what are you doing in these people's garden!!!!!]... ,but, there's a cemetery down by Janes Creek.. is that it?"... Yes, that's one of them...."Well, let''s see.. I don't know how to tell you... you just go up there yonder a piece, and take that road [HUH?] and it should just take you down on around and the cemetery is on the left"... "Okay, thanks so much"... [I'm muttering again in the car.. .BELLAH is NOT on the LEFT.... YADKIN is on the left, but that doesn't help me with finding BELLAH... I don't feel very confident in his directions....[should have, but the car fumes must have messed with my mind..... it is now 8:00.] SO, I decide to go back to where I first started having problems... and I find my way back up to that famous RING SCHOOL sign.... I stop and study my famous made from memory map, and see that my Dad had said to go STRAIGHT.. which meant that that middle road was IT!! [not the road going to Ring School... not the road that I just spent over an hour on.. but the middle road which of course was NOT to opposite of Ring School].. SO, I start down this one, NOW, THIS looks better!! Yep, here's that intersection, oh... that's where I would turn to go to Perry Cemetery in Sharp Co... do I dare??... NAH, might not get back for days... it is already 8:30... I come up on to BELLAH... YEAH!! I spent a total of 5 min. there to get a couple of dates on stones, and off I go.. it's starting to WARM up and YADKIN is going to take quite a bit of time!!! I drive, and drive, bump, bump, bump..... whoa, there's a deer... whoa, there's a skunk [easy, boy!!]... bump, bump, bump... there's a squirrel.... bump bump bump... I look to go DOWN... Another instruction I had was: 3. ONCE YOU GET TO BELLAH CEMETERY, FOLLOW THE CREEK DOWN UNTIL YOU COME TO YADKIN.. Back to the map I go.... okay, I'm fine here.. okay... hmmm, is this IT?? hmmm, oh mercy, you don't suppose I'm lost again.. this road is going UP, not DOWN.... bump, bump..bump....... oh brother, I don't remember this at all!! Hallelujah, there's a house.. .oh, good, there are 2 men in the truck, [Lord, please don't let them be somebody on the 10 most wanted list!].... pardon me, I'm looking for Yadkin Cem.. the man looks at me like I've lost my mind... "just STAY on that road, and go on down, and don't turn right or left'... Oh, good, I'm on the right road..."Now, don't turn right or left, just stay on that road [guess he could read this Kansas car where we don't have woods or turns!!]... STAY ON THAT ROAD YOU'RE ON!!! and looks at me in disbelief that anyone could be so dumb...I pull out thinking, well, at least I'm still alive and on the right road!! And, low and behold, I do exactly as he says, and pull in to Yadkin at 10 min after 9am.... [3 HOURS!!! for a 40 min drive]... it is getting WARM!! I find my stones, get my bucket and cleaner and brush, clean them, place the flowers, get the pictures.. all in an hour.. wanted to spend more time, but it was now HOT.. .I am constantly pouring my bottled water on my head and neck [cause I have a tendency to get heat stroke and very sick]...I'm wet, I don't care.... I'm thinking, I dare not get sick and collapse down here.. might be weeks or MONTHS before I am discovered!! Going back.. let's see can I find my way?? I go by the house to discover that the two men were not wanted killers or rapists, but a couple of MARIOTT cousins... .oh brother.. they are gone now, and I didn't have a chance to chit chat!! I find my way back fine, and sure enough, it really is 30-40 min. back.. .. but I have decided that I will spend the extra time to go by Ravenden Springs way... if I'm going to be driving for over an hour, I might as well take a highway and not collect the dust on my bumper where I have now started a garden!! I get back to Alton to take a much needed bath, and discover that I have left my bucket, brush, and family group sheet down at Yadkin... Do, I dare go down there and get them?.... NAH, I'll donate them to the cemetery for anyone else who might forget their bucket or brush... After all, anyone who stays on the main road, can find it!!! Lanita I'm always late. My ancestors arrived on the JUNE flower.

Recently I have seen several message for the surname Bussell on one of my mail lists. The name stirred memories so I went digging and here is what I found. Now bear in mind that I have done little research the past 2-3 years. I have finally retired again, YEAH! And now I am making an effort to get back to research again. I found a note to my self about my great great aunt Ellen Gates and gr gr uncle Robert Thomas Gates, both from Randoph Co AR. My notes tell me that Ellen Gates married a Pershall, born abt 1861. She married a Tom B. Bussell, 1902 Randolph Co AR. One child, Mamie Bussell, b. before 7 Aug 1908 She married a G.J. Harris 1906, in Randolph Co AR. he was born about 1880 , moving to Randolph Co AR in 1906 from KY. He lived with his wife Ellen and daughters Florida abd Ethel, was farming in 1910 in 1910 in Little Black, Randolph Co AR. He was affiliated with the Freewill Baptist church in 1910. Children were, Florida Harris, b. abt 1909 and Ethel Harris b. abt 1911. I would like to learn what happened to the first husbands and daughters (all 3). Ellen was the daughter of Frank (S.F.) Gates and Sarah Jane Noss Gates. She was born abt. 1865-67. My gr uncle R.T. as he was called, married a Malissa Bussell in 1899. Since I have learned that aunt Ellen married a Bussell, I have wonderd if there was a connection between the two. R.T. Gates was married 2 Dec. 1875, married 9 Nov 1899, and died 24 Jan 1909. Malissa was born 7 Nov 1884, died 15 Dec 1908. I believe both (w/o checking further) to be buried at Sharum cemetery in Randolph Co AR. They had the following children, Lewis Gates, Frank Gates and Goldie Gates. They were the guardianship of their uncle Michael C. Gates after the death of their parents. Michael's wife Margaret Gates assumed their guardianship after the death of Michael in 1911. ANY help appreciated, thank you... Hi everyone, I'm back trying to figure out my Moores and related families. My mom was very sick for several months and died recently, so I had to ease up on my root digging. I'm still trying to catch up with work and housework. Someone sent me information a few months ago about John Moore who was married to Sarah Frances McCauley (I think that's right) in Randolph County, Arkansas. I don't know what happened, but I don't have the emails about them anymore. If you wouldn't mind sending again, I will really appreciate it. Also, I would like to do a spreadsheet for any Moores (particularly Johns) in the area covered by this list. I'll be glad to share whatever I can compile. Please share what you can. Advice is welcome, too! Starting out, I think my column titles would be: First name, Middle Name/Initial, Birthplace, DOB, Place of Death, DOD, Occupation, Spouse, Father, Father's BP, Mother, Mother's BP, # children (should I do names here?), Location 1820, Location 1830, Location 1840, Location 1850, Location 1860, Location 1870 Am I putting in too much? Not enough? Suggestions? Thanks for your help. Judy Moore, Haws (& var.), Taylor, Murray, Cypret in Oregon County area Yates, Burns, Sheets in Carter, Shannon, Reynolds counties
I have found no proof when James BELLAH was born, but... James BELLAH married first to Mary ALLEN in Tennessee. They had five children: Sarah BELLAH HUDSON, 14 APR 1806-29 FEB 1884; Susannah BELLAH STANDLEE, 16 JAN 1808-1 JAN 1856; John D BELLAH, ??; Allen BELLAH, 7 JAN 1814-6 APR 1872; Nancy G BELLAH HUDSON, 6 JUN 1818-6 JUN 1873. Mary ALLEN was killed by a tree falling on the wagon during a storm while enroute to Arkansas from Tennessee. James BELLAH married second to Eleanor "Nellie" "Ellen" HUDSON. They had four children: Samuel BELLAH, 12 MAY 1822-7 JUL 1882; Cyrus BELLAH, 6 OCT 1823-7 JAN 1907; Reuben Alexander BELLAH, 8 FEB 1825-(killed in Civil War); Martha "Patsy" BELLAH WHITE, 19 JUN 1827-??. After James' death, James Harris HUDSON (husband of Sarah BELLAH) became the guardian of minors Allen and Nancy; Eleanor HUDSON married Henry WHITE, Sr on 10 JAN 1835 (Lawrence Co Marriage Book A1, p 47) and he was named guardian of HER BELLAH children. Samuel and Patsy both married in Randolph Co; Cyrus married in Ripley Co. After Henry's death, Eleanor and her children went to California. As you can see, none of the children listed below belong to James and Nellie. James was the brother of my 3rd ggrandfather, (believed to be named Leonard BELLAH.) This (Leonard?) was the father of Elizabeth and Nathan. There is a great deal of documentation on this family on the Bellah website. See "History of the Hudson Family" written in 1912 by Rev. John HUDSON, son of James Harris HUDSON and Sarah BELLAH. Also, there are postings from the family bible of Cyrus & Mariah WYMAN BELLAH. James BELLAH. Born in 1800 est. in Tennessee. On 10 Jul 1821 when James was 21, he married Eleandor "Nellie" HUDSON, daughter of Edward D. HUDSON & Mary Ann WHEAT, in Randoph Co. AR. Born on 14 Apr 1793 in Green County, TN. Eleandor "Nellie" died in Springville, Ventura Co., CA, on 26 Feb 1882; she was 88. They had the following children: 2 i. Samuel (1820-) 3 ii. Leonard (1800-)..should this be 1820? 4 iii. Walter SR (1806-) should this be 1826? 5 iv. Elizabeth (1802-) should this be 1822? 6 v. Nathan (1805-) should this be 1825? There is obviously a problem here because James can't have been born in 1800, and fathered a child at the age of 5!! I know that Arkansas water is GREAT, but, can it really do the supernatural?
