    3. Another group that won't show up on SS is government employees that worked under the Civil Service umbrella; they have their own retirement plan. My husband recently retired and will never be listed under Social Security. Anyone who now works for government does pay into Social Security...except elected officials (please correct me if I'm wrong about this). 3. Group, I received this post from Jeffery Scism the USGENWEB Cordinator fo the NE NC region. Pat Miller Hi Pat, please pass along if you wish. The SSDI is an index of those whose deaths were reported to Social Security and those whose death was followed by a death benefit claim. In 1995 the Social Security registration process became mandatory for children who enter public school, most jurisdictions start the process at birth. The Tax laws indicate that children over one must have a ssan to be included as dependants on a federal tax form. The early results on SSDI (pre 1963) are sporatic and were added after the fact. Most were Railroad Retirements, and come from when the Railroad retirement program was merged with social security. Farmers and self employed were not required to have a SSAN. ~~ Jeffery G. Scism, IBSSG Local Coordinator Representative, NE/NC Region, USGenWeb Project http://usgenweb.org/

    3. Gene Phillips just sent ne this info: [thanks, Gene!] "I think they would have had to die after 1939. Here's an interesting story about Ida May Fuller, the first person to draw social security benefits. From what I understand, you had to die while drawing benefits or leave benefits to a survivor. Since she was the first person to draw a social security check in Jan 1940, noone would have died while drawing social security before that date. http://www.ssa.gov/history/imf.html Gene Lanita I'm always late. 3. Lanita, Nobody was forced to register for Social Security until many years after the 1930s. I have very few of my ancestors listed in the SS register unless they were born in the 1940s or 1950s. In fact it has only been the last 20 years or so that SS numbers were necessary for children and I have friends who still don't have SS numbers.
