Sharon: No Huston that I am aware of. My grandfather was William R. LAWSON, he was supposedly adopted (or not). Trying to find a family that were his adoptive parents, he took their surname. My grandfather had six daughters, one of which was my mother. They lived on the Arkansas/Missouri stateline, and he worked in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. I sure wish that I could find some LAWSON family that he might have been a part of. Earl Mouton Conrad & Sharon <[email protected]> wrote: Earl, do you have a Huston Lawson in your line? Huston married Mary Simmons in 1881 in Clay County, Arkansas. They were married for only a few years, but they had at least one child, a daughter. The story is that the daughter drowned, but I don't know when. Thanks. Todd, Can you give me the web site address/es for the Creek County, OK information, especially the Salpulpa newspaper? You had asked me about some of my Oregon co. relations being in Oklahoma and I think Salpulpa was where they were in the 1920s. They didn't stay there though. They returned to Oregon Co. MO when they were sued by family members. Thanks for that link, Lanita! I'm surprised that, on the subject of reading tombstones, no one has mentioned the value of digital photography. I realise it is a relatively new technology, but now widely available. And it doesn't take a lot of time to learn the techniques of image manipulation with computer software (Adobe's Photoshop is one of the better products). Intensify, reverse polarisation, colour manipulation, etc. Its amazing what one can do without ever actually touching the stone! Personally, I think one of the best memorial stones is that of my great grandfather John Jackson Cowart (JJC) Holland in the Munsell Cemetery (Shannon County, MO). Many of you will have seen it. A very large rough-hewn granite block with just the word HOLLAND on it. His name and dates are on the footstone. No missing that one! Cheers, Ron Burnett descendant of Burnett/Wilson/Woodward/Shoemate, Holland/Swafford/McKinney/Cook/Gilmore/Pratt. > http://www.cemeterypreservations.accessgenealogy.com/ > This site also tells of the hazards of preserving of those cemeteries > prior to 1910... lots of interesting info..
You might want to check out: http://www.cemeterypreservations.accessgenealogy.com/ There is a great deal of info located here that tells the meanings of different things found on the tombstone. Example: if your loved one was a member of Woodman of the World, [an early insurance organization and fraternal order], members of the group were provided insurance during their life. In death, they received a lump sum that went toward their monument, which was a stone carved like a tree or parts of a tree. Sometimes, when you find just a stump, it meant that they died before their natural time. The hands, in various positions also have a multitude of meanings... This site also tells of the hazards of preserving of those cemeteries prior to 1910... lots of interesting info.. Lanita

and then there's contacts like all of you, that makes sharing a natural part of researching. While we search and research, we come in contact with those like so many of you who end up being cousins! THAT is why I still do this! Thanks, Todd, for the good words. I needed it today. Love, Lanita I trace my family history so I will know who to blame.
Hi Ginger, No, I don't live in Thayer; if I did, you would have the pictures of the headstones by now! I live in Milwaukee. I contacted my cousin, Larry Wyatt, who is on the list also. His sister, my cousin, married Stanley Fleming Lark and lived in St. Louis. She died a couple of years ago and Stanley moved out to the Pacific coast to live with his son. The C. in Fleming's name was Carlyle according to Larry. F.C. (as he was called) and Nellie attended Woodside Memorial Methodist Church in Thayer until their deaths. My deceased brother was best friends with Nellie and F.C.'s son, Walter, who died 11 April 1945 while on a bombing run over Germany. I also have a snapshot of Walter with my other brother who is still living, if you would like that also. My parents considered Walter a member of the family. Date of death was provided by Larry in addition to names of other family members: Eugene, Howard, Russell and Nancy. He thinks they are all alive and living in the St. Louis area. You may already have this information but I thought I would pass it on anyway. Now about the pictures. I have a new scanner which is just not working properly. I will gladly make copies of the two pictures if you want me to mail them to you. Just send along your address (privately). By the way, how are you connected with this family? I am going to send this email to the list also just in case there is someone else researching the name. Catherine Ginger Smith wrote: > Hi Catherine, > > Ok, here goes. The Fleming C.
