The new home for the Oregon county lists is ready to go. In a few minutes, I'll send out personal invitations to the subscribers of this list who wish to join the new group will be able to do so. I can not add members directly. It should be a link you can click that will let you 'accept' the invitation to join the new group. You may need to check your spam folder as I can't say when such will be delivered. If you don't find an invitation in your email you may also go to this site - https://groups.io/g/MO-OREGON and select Join Group. Of course, folks may still post to these lists through 3/1. Second try - As of now, the mooregon list has 95 subscribers and the mooregon-history list has 102 subscribers. It is my decision to combine these two lists into one. In light of Rootsweb's decision to close these lists and every other list on March 2nd, with the current administrator's blessing, I have set up a new home for this list. In my next email, I'll send you further information regarding this and how to join the new home for this list. Tim Stowell Chattanooga

Here is a message we just received from RootsWeb: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team If anybody wants to continue this list on a site like Group.IO: https://groups.io/ or wherever, I happen to have the list of subscribed e-mails to this list. Get back to me. Given that this list has been quiet for ages, I don't think it is worth doing, but I wanted to offer it. Mike F Houston, TX
My family moved from Independence Co., AR to North Texas in the same period as did many of their relatives and others. They went for advantageous opportunity to farm on the shares and after good reports from others. Migration is often chained to the word and opportunities of others. For instance, enough people from Sharp Co, Ark moved to Wenatchee, Washington in the 1940s for it now to be a virtual colony with distinctive Ozark music, food, and other aspects of home. I've always thought it would be an interesting project to map these cultural outposts. I believe they had cut down all the trees. Oregon County was virgin pine forest before settlers came in. I've seen a book with a log wagon transporting a tree that that it's width was about 3 time times the height of the man driving the wagon. That happened here in MS where I live. Towns sprang up around lumber mills all across the area. When they had clear cut all the virgin pine trees, the mill close and the town died. The are dozens of places that are only names on a map across this area. There is a picture in the museum here of a wagon and a team of 4 horses sitting on top of a pine tree stump. The land may not have been very good for farming either. There is a story in the Oregon County History book about a family that went out to Oklahoma in a wagon to do sharecropping. I think it was 1910. One of the family members died and they brought him back to Oregon County to bury him. I didn't find that any of our Blankenships went to TX. Descendants did, but none of the male Blankenships did that I could find. I have found quite a few of them in OK, including Bryan County. I was just recently able to connect the Blankenships there back to our Blankenships in Oregon County. Thank you findagrave. I've found more lost relatives on there then any place else. BTW, Christine and I are 4th cousins. Gilbert and Nancy Blankenship being our common ancestor. Something must have changed or happened in the period from about 1900 to 1910-12 in Oregon County, because my Cox relatives left Oregon County, and moved to Texas (Archer County) also, a bit further west than Red River County. Some of them returned to Oregon County after a few years, and did not leave again until the early 1940s. A few of them stayed in Texas, and were in the newspaper business. Although my Cox family is known to hail from Missouri, my branch (grandmother Billie Cloe Cox Rogers) had about a decade in Texas. Always felt strange to me that she was born in Texas, but the roots of her family were in Missouri. I found one that comes up on Ancestry, but it isn't you and it's from Germany. That's all I see there. I'll take a look at the other's tomorrow. All of these locations are east of State Rd 19 and most of them are north of County Rd 212 west of the Couch Community. The locations are north and south of Norman Church where most of them are buried in the adjoining cemetery. They are all the sons or grandsons of Gilbert Blankenship 1805-1868. The cemetery is known now as the Norman cemetery, but was also known as Blankenship Cemetery. 75 of the 315 known burials are Blankenships. Only 2 are Normans. Manual Scott Blankenship was my great grandmother's father. My great grandmother was Bessie Blankenship, she married Henry Rogers. She is buried at Norman cemetary, as are other Blankenships. -----Original Message----- From: Gene Phillips [mailto:okienms@earthlink.net] Sent: Thursday, July 19, 2018 6:35 PM To: mo-oregon-history@rootsweb.com Subject: [MO-OREGON-HISTORY] Re: Roll Call Pat, We're not related on the Phillips side, but probably are on Blankenship. Thanks for pointing that out. And the main site for MOGenweb - mogenweb.org is gone. It's the link from the home page of USGenWeb. The other day mogenweb.org led to one of the county sites for Missouri. I reported it to the state coordinator. I guess the site was overwritten and there wasn't a backup.
