This is a test of the Rootsweb lists I am on. It is also some information for the list administrator if they feel the list is not running as expected. And finally it is an attempt to get something posted to the list so Rootsweb does not turn the list off. The list admin should probably go to this page: http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ and try to set up a new mailman login, if not already done. If you do that you will probably get to this page eventually: https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/lists/setupmail Then you might want to sign up for this list: https://mailinglists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/search/Listowners But be warned, you will receive postings from that list almost every day. May 8 a day at times. Another option that I do not encourage is to turn the list over to me - at least temporarily. Again, I do not want that done if you are willing to keep the list. Mike Flannigan
Julia, I sent you some names and phone numbers. Also, the Carley Andrus number is good, I spoke with her on the phone earlier in the day. Galena is 7 miles south and east of where Oto stood. It is also 10 miles east and south of Crane. It is approximately 22 miles south of Springfield on 160 and then 9 miles west on 176. The courthouse is still there. They wasted a huge amount of taxpayer money building a new sheriff's office, new jail, and a big, new library. No change in the quality of law enforcement and the crimes still go unsolved and the library is much bigger than what the county needed, but the money has been spent. Best of luck, David

It is the county seat of Stone County. Really pretty and very small. Has a 'town square' with the red brick courthouse in the middle and the 'main streets' on all four sides with a few little side streets branching out (residential). Anyway, nice people. It was approximately 10 miles SE of the highway where we found the old Oto Church (still in use). Take Hwy 160 south from Springfield, west on Hwy/Rte 176 to Hwy 28 (short distance south). That last turn-off is out in the open and lots of signs, you shouldn't miss it. I was given this name (Carly Andrus) and a phone number (417-369-0155), trying to find an Oto resident who might be able to help me locate a gravestone in either Nelson Cemetery, Parsons Cemetery, or Anderson Cemetery there in Oto - I have been unable to reach her. I've tried every possible resource online without success in finding my Gr-gr-grandfather James Robert BROOKHART's place of burial (d. 8 Oct 1895). When we visited the area in 2000, I was not aware of the location/existence of these cemeteries, so missed them completely. I did go into the public library in Galena without any luck in finding any burial information. If anyone knows Ms. Andrus' email address or has contact with her, I'd like to speak with her or email her. Any help greatly appreciated. Julia

There are dozens of Stingtowns in every state. This one is an alternate name for Oakwood. Stingtown generally refers to the RR tracks near the towns. i.e.: http://terraserverusa.com/map.aspx?t=2&s=12&lon=-91.38391&lat=39.68996&opt=1 Although, in Oakwoods case they have another explanation on record for the name (see below). I know of 12 Stingtowns in MO: Bluffton - AKA Stringtown - Montgomery County http://terraserverusa.com/map.aspx?t=2&s=12&lon=-91.62444&lat=38.70750&opt=1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Junction City - AKA Springtown; AKA Stringtown - Madison County - "An incorporated village, 1 mile N of Fredericktown. Thanks to your Stone county friends, this is all we know about that ghost town: The name Oto was selected because of its shortness and simplicity. Julia, Carley Andrus with the Stone County Historical Society lives in Oto. She would know. Her phone number is (417) 369-0155. I bought from her the book she wrote about an incredible story which happened in Oto eighty years ago. The book will shed light on Oto and perhaps your relatives who lived there. Thanks for that information. It was very helpful. I had Defiance in my DB, but with an unknown location. Besides being in Worth county, the only other thing I knew about it was: "Was laid out about 1872 near a mill owned by Jacob Winemiller." It was apparently in this general area: http://terraserverusa.com/map.aspx?t=2&s=12&lon=-94.59861&lat=40.51722&opt=1 Thanks again.
