Subject: MO-CW-D Digest V03 #9 The digest had a number of interesting messages and observations, and I'll not comment on all of them. Unfortunately, I hadn't seen the original article about Congressman Gebhardt, or know what the current issue of flag-flying is about. I do know that for many, many of our citizens, seeing a Confederate battle flag is a reminder of those who fought in a cause that would have kept them in bondage -- even if well-intentioned and sincere. The discussion of this issue has always been divisive among us, and I for one would welcome it if our list host would declare it off-limits, but that's Joe's call, not mine, and I respect him. What I do have to object to, though, is the message below which (1) suggests that having a job with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, in which I as a white person hold membership, would be disgraceful. An esteemed Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall -- now on U.S. postage stampts -- held that top position, and I think it deserves respect rather than slander. (2) I seriously doubt that the Communist Party is interested in having Dick Gebhardt as president; they have always put up a candidate of their own, ludicrous though their platforms may be. If the writer has any evidence of what looks to me to be an outlandish claim, I would welcome reading it. Otherwise, this is just a red-baiting smear, and again I think this is not the forum for such vitriol. Expecting better, Sincerely, David Hadley Finke Columbia, MO 65203 (Great-grandson of Heinrich Finke, 31st Mo Vol Inf., USA) [in response to:] Date: Thu, 16 Jan 2003 14:13:41 -0800 From: david kodelya <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MO-CW] Confederate Flags Removed In Missouri Confederates are American Veterans; disgracing them and their flags is in no way Presidential, unless He's running for the top job at the NAACP.
