TORONTO, March 6 /CNW/ - The Writers' Trust of Canada announced today the winners of eight national literary prizes at the second annual Great Literary Awards, held at the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto. The Writers' Trust awards night is now one of the richest literary prize-giving events in the country, awarding winners, finalists, and a Canadian literary journal a grand total of $133,000. "This year's winners speak to Canada's flourishing literary industry, with both established and emerging writers honoured with the top prizes," said John Macfarlane, Chair of the Writers' Trust of Canada. "These awards help generate the recognition their talents deserve." These are the prizes presented at the Great Literary Awards, including comments from the juries. THE ROGERS WRITERS' TRUST FICTION PRIZE ($15,000) Sponsored by Rogers Communications Inc. - Paulette Jiles for Enemy Women, published by HarperFlamingo Canada "Her grasp of the time and its politics lends heft to the authenticity of the fiction, which she echoes with excerpts, sometimes ironic, drawn from (American) Civil War histories, newspapers, journals, and correspondence.
