I was wondering, did veterans receive, or have to apply for headstones for their graves if they served in the civil war? Is there a way to look at the headstone and see, or know if they fought for the union or confederacy? Supposedly, my great-great grandfather served and I was wondering if the stone on his grave is from the government.? I have been unable to find his name in any of the databases. Well, I did find his last name no first name with a group from Louisiana, suppose that could be him, even though he lived in MO. He would have been in a French speaking unit, so I suppose that would make it confederate. His name Theophilus (often misspelled) Toulouse. Would appreciate any help, thanks
