It is true the stones issued by the federal government are pointed for a confederate and the union ones rounded. You can still order these stones through the Department of Veterans Affairs, free of charge except for having the stone set. You must proove the soldier's military service and fill out some paperwork. It takes a while of course to receive the stone and I believe you can choose marble or granite and also special inscriptions (i.e. if the soldier was a mason, the masonic symbol can be engraved on the stone). -----Original Message----- From: rose [mailto:hickoryflatoutlaws@centurytel.net] Sent: Wednesday, February 01, 2006 8:00 PM To: MO-CW-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MO-CW] tombstones This brings to mind an old story I have heard, but it is probably a myth. So, there is some truth to the story? One hears so many stories, and it is sometimes hard to separate truth from fiction. Wow, I had suspected he was a confederate soldier. Thanks to all in the group who contributed to solving this mystery for me. Here is another question I have: A Winchester single shot rifle, Would that have been used during the civil war and by what side? ----- Original Message ----- From: rose <hickoryflatoutlaws@centurytel.net> To: <MO-CW-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 02, 2006 9:51 AM Subject: Re: [MO-CW] tombstones > So, there is some truth to the story? The Winchester: What caliber is it? Is it a black powder or cartridge--cal should be stamped. Muzzle loader loads from the end of barrell and cart type opens at back for shell insert. They had a lot single shot alright (muzzle loader and ram rod)usually long. Muzzle loader had to be loaded fron the barrel front end. With a Ramrod slot below barrell. Guns were captured and used by both sides. Used the best one. I read where people soon after battles rummaged about for relics and guns and etc. Later Some bullet type used. Some outfits bought their own weapon and some towns bought for their outfits and were the latest and best. Repeater there were some used. Minnie Ball some earlier 69 cal --56 Cal both (big)-- Bullet & 2 buckshot and few 22 cal -- shotgun and buckshot was also used. Bullets and powder was wrapped in paper and had to be bit and torn. So "no teeth no service". I read where some forgot to pull the ram-rod out and shot the ramrod too. Some scared and just kept loading and not shooting. Lots of smoke in battle made it hard to see. I found a lot of minnie balls in one place in KC and there was a screw hole in most. (I metal detect) I later read where the night before a battle they had a hard rain and had to pull the bullets cause their powder got wet. They even made their own bullets at times and always left scrap lead. They Also did lot of carving and made things from bullets. Nice to visit--watching for more in the know to answer Your asking. Winchester good pricey weapon to have not sure they were in the CW. Meanwhile My version of Your weapon question to get You by.
