Just recently found the newspaper item from the Columbia Statesman, May 2, 1862 issue. Death at Alton. John M. Robert, Jr., son of Dr. William R. Roberts, of Rocheport , died in Alton, Ill., whilst under arrest as a prisoner of war. His disease was consumption. ... His remains were brought to Rocheport by his father and interred at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Errors were made in the names. Dr. John William Roberts has a stone in the Walnut Grove Cemetery, and the name of his son was John William Roberts, Jr. I have found 7 John W. Roberts on the Missouri Civil War listing, but not sure which one would be the correct one. I found one John W. Roberts on the Alton prison list who was a PVT. in Shelbys Missouri, but he was captured in Oct. of 1864 and died in Feb. of 1865. He was buried on State Ground. Another I found in the state archives was in "Col. McKenney's Reg't M.S.G. Condererate. Prisoner." He's listed as a 1st Lt. and in the Mo State Guard. Any help appreciated.
