In a discussion about elevating Civil War figures to the status of perfect heroes, someone mentioned that Robert E Lee authorized taking African-Americans captured during the Gettysburg Campaign back to Virginia to be sold. A friend questioned how that could be since they were retreating, and were barely able to get their own wounded back. Does anyone know more about this story? Is there a source for it?
