Although I can't speak for him I think what he was saying is that the Indians weren't slaves of Europeans (like Blacks were - on plantations, etc owned as property etc.). I don't think he was addressing whether Indians themselves owned slaves (or trafficed in them - which we all know certain tribes did.) There were many of the Richer Cherokee that had slaves. Also many tribes made slaves (or adopted) Indians from the losing side during wars/raids. --- Don Knight <donaldknight1@comcast.net> wrote: > Just curious. Oh I dont like these kind of debates.. but yes, Indians have been taken by Euro's as slaves, some were even taken to Europe... as for Indians being slave owners, yes, some were, however, Indians had a hard time with the concept of "owning" people, as much as they could not grasp the concept of "owning" land. Their slaves, were treated as equals... not a lessor class, and even given their own "tribal name" of sorts, like "Cherokee Freedman" which means they had been with the Cherokee and now were Freedmen... other tribes did the same. But not all tribes had slaves, in fact, few tribes had slaves. As far as tribes making slaves of other Indians... never heard about it, I am 46 years old, born into the Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma... learned many stories of my people and of other peoples (my tribe was once part of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) Indians were not perfect, no one was... the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma first began with supporting the confederates, and later switched sides..
