Also, were there any military prisons in MO during the Civil War. I have an ancestor that was with this regiment and died Dec. 31, 1861. Family lore has it that he died at Andersonville prison but this prison wasn't even built until 1863. So am wondering if it could have been another prison. Also, you should be able to find a Gentry County history. Local county histories often have a good deal of information about Civil War regiments. (It is a very common name, but my ancestors from Cass County were also Porter's.) This was very early in the War. Booneville was June 17, 1861, Dry Wood Creek was Sep 2, 1861, the Battle of the Hemp Bales (Lexington) was Sep 13-20, 1861, and the Battle of Belmont was on Nov 6, 1861. I would assume that this regiment was formed for local service in Northwest Missouri. I think that most of the Regular Confederate Army units were limited to Southern Missouri by then. Craynor's was probably scouting for guerrilla bands. Getting prisoners back to a Confederate Prisoner of War camp would not have been a very easy task. Isaac's family in 1860 were living in Ringgold Co., IA. and I assume that inlisting in MO was closer than anywhere in IA. My Porter's came from Ill. and KY before that. Of course maybe some extended family members had moved there. Anything is possible. Thank you for the additional information. I will check those out and see what I can find. This Regiment was formed Oct. 1, 1861 so some of these activities were too early for this regiment. The only one that they could have participated in would have been the Battle of Belmont.
