    3. Would any of you MO. experts be able to direct me to a University or Library that would have the NARA microfilm for the 2nd MO. (Federal) infantry, Maj. Beck, Laiboldt's brigade? Living by Chickamauga battlefield, a source in the Southeastern states would be preferred. Thanks, S.J. Bradley. Also, you should be able to find a Gentry County history. Local county histories often have a good deal of information about Civil War regiments. (It is a very common name, but my ancestors from Cass County were also Porter's.) This was very early in the War. Booneville was June 17, 1861, Dry Wood Creek was Sep 2, 1861, the Battle of the Hemp Bales (Lexington) was Sep 13-20, 1861, and the Battle of Belmont was on Nov 6, 1861. I would assume that this regiment was formed for local service in Northwest Missouri. I think that most of the Regular Confederate Army units were limited to Southern Missouri by then. Craynor's was probably scouting for guerrilla bands. Getting prisoners back to a Confederate Prisoner of War camp would not have been a very easy task. This says Shank's Regt. a muster roll for Jan& Feby. 1864 Enlisted Aug. 12 1862 Jackson Co. Col. Thompson next: last paid by whom: Maj. Lawrence to Aug. 31 1863 present. This is all that is there. My question, the massacre at Lone Jack hadn't occurred yet. that was not till Sept. 6 1863. But the Battle of Lone Jack was very soon to occur Aug. 15th & 16th 1862. If he had joined with a State Guard his name would not be on the 12th Cav muster roll as enlisting in it would it. I know this was early on a Hay's or Jackson County Cav. unit, are they the same one? I do so want my info right when we do the service. , But this info is so mixed up. One family member states the Brother joined the Union, I show him with F.M. in the 12th Cav. an other Brother all I have is Prices Army. So difficult to work with. 1. Re: Guerrilla General Named Crabtree
    2. Glenn, To my knowledge, there is no such roster of the men "General Crabtree" recruited in south Cole and north Miller County during 1861 and 1862. At least in several expeditions Crabtree (he just called himself "General"--he was not one) carried his recruits to south-central Missouri and evidently turned them over to Confederate Colonels William O. Coleman and Thomas R. Freeman to help them fill up their regiments. Therefore, if you had an ancestor from those two counties or nearby who worked with Crabtree try looking in the rosters of Coleman and Freeman. I have had great difficulty finding biographical detail (especially prewar) on Crabtree, lending strength to the rumor that "Crabtree" is not his real name. Crabtree was killed about late September 1862 and buried in one of his hideout caves. Some of his regular cadre formed their own guerrilla band in that region in 1864. Hopefully, anyone you seek was not part of that bunch. If you are searching for a particular southern soldier try looking for his online military service record via the Missouri Secretary of State's Office website. Try that on Google.com or some other search engine. Bruce Nichols

    2. Thanks so much for the information. This site you referred me to seems to consist of only Central Missouri Cemetery Sites. My specific concern for Smith/Davis Cemetery is in Raytown, Missouri, which is in Jackson County or now Kansas City Missouri area. I have the longitude and Latitude and the listing of the buried from the last report by the DAR in 1922 I believe. Thanks again for your recommendations. Claiborne Scholl Nappier

    3. There are several rosters available on-line. If you can't find them, let me know, and I will do a search and send you the URLs. No roster can be complete. Most of them are based on post-war membership in veterans groups. Quantrill's participation stretch from the early days when he was a Jayhawker in Kansas, to the time that his own Bushwhackers kicked him out, and he went to Kentucky to join forces with Sue Mundy. One of my relatives rode with him in the very early days at Lone Jack and Independence, but the only record is family memory. I have spent a little time trying to read through census record for Cass and Jackson Counties, trying to match names. It is difficult, however, since it is all hand written script. (I will CC this to my small Cass County group of relatives and contacts.) Since the other side of my family lived just outside of Lawrence, I am not a great fan of either Quantrill or James H Lane.
