Thanks, Marv! I have a copy of the 1882 history of Daviess County on CD and didn't find what I was looking for. Didn't think GENTRY Co men would be necessary in the DAVIESS Co. regiment, would they? Wouldn't Gentry Co. have their own unit? Thanks for all the suggestions, this has been a deadend for me. Lanita Sconce Smith DCGS President Genealogists never die, they just loose their roots
Lanita: If you can sort out the service of Daviess County men in the Civil War, you'll have a real accomplishment. However, there are some sources that can help, especially on the Union side. The 1882 history of Daviess County may be available in the Gallatin Library. If not, I've seen it on microfilm from Salt Lake, and I've obtained it on interlibrary loan. Daviess County furnished three companies -- A, B and G -- to the First Cavalry Regiment, Missouri State Militia. The respective commanders were Capt. Joseph H. McGee, Capt. William H. Folmsbee, and Capt John Ballinger. Folmsbee in particular was an interesting character, a prominent Radical Republican who was active in politics and was a representative to the 1864 constitutional convention. There is also another book that's a history of Daviess and Gentry Counties. I've seen it, taken notes from it, but can't lay my hands on them at the moment. So I can't say if there's much on the war. There is an early history of Llivingston County that's helpful, also. The 33rd Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia, was largely from Daviess and Caldwell. Company B, 4th Provisional Regiment, Enrolled Missouri Militia, was partly from Daviess, as was (I believe) another company of the regiment. I know that at least one company of this regiment was from Gentry. The Livingston County history referenced above tells an interesting story about the latter. The Provisional Enrolled Missouri Militia and the Enrolled Missouri Militia are NOT the same. The EMM consisted of essentially all able bodied men. The provisional regiments were later formed from the EMM using men who could be spared for longer periods of active duty. My grandfather, George D. Burge, served in both the 33rd and Company B of the 4th Provisional. Elements of the 33rd, under the command of Lt. Col. Samuel P. Cox of Daviess County, were part of the force that in October 1864 tracked down and killed the notorious guerrilla William "Bloody Bill" Anderson. Some units of the Fourth also saw some sharp action. For an very helpful account of the very confusing organization of the several militias in the state, the next time you're at Mid-Continent Library in Independence, look for a small monograph by William Fannin, "Defenders of the Border: Missouri's Union Military Organizations in the Civil War" (Jefferson City, Mo.: Mid-Missouri Genealogical Society, Inc., n.d.) A more complete history is in Record and Pension Office, War Department, "Organization and Status of Missouri Troops (Union and Confederate) in Service During the Civil War" (Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1902). The annual reports of the state adjutant general can also be useful, but the preceding citation is largely based on these reports. See also the AGO records from the state archives, on line at http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/soldiers/. Lanita, You forgot to say whether you wanted northern or southern units from Daviess & Gentry Counties in the Civil War, so I will take a stab at both. For the South, those two counties contributed southern men into the 4th Division of the Missouri State Guard during 1861. Most of those units and many of the men in early 1862 converted into Confederate service from state service. Thereafter, since Missouri was wholly occupied for the rest of the war by Union troops, southern men from that area had to ride south to either find southern behind-enemy-lines recruiters or to Arkansas to find Rebel units. Therefore, the Rebels from those two counties ended up in a variety of units. For the North, the first place I looked is to see if Daviess and Gentry Counties published county histories that would answer this question. There is one, Historical Publishing Company, "History of Daviess and Gentry Counties, Missouri," Topeka: Historical Publishing Company, 1922. Sadly, the Civil War chapter in this old book contains mostly "who hit John" local legends and stories that do not list units from either side. However, on page 107 there is a list of the regular Missouri Union units men from Daviess County joined: 18th MO Infantry 2 23rd MO Infantry 39 25th MO Infantry 60 35th MO Infantry 2 2nd MO Cavalry 3 11th MO Cavalry 32 12th MO Cavalry 1 and pages 117 and 118 contains lists of men who served in the Civil War. You may wish to request your local library borrow a copy of this book for you via interlibrary loan or at least photocopy the Civil War chapter in it and send it to you via interlibrary loan. Sharon was kind enough to tell you her ancestor served from Daviess County in the 4th Provisional Enrolled Missouri Militia Regiment from that region (during 1863), the 27th Missouri Infantry Regiment (regulars), and the 33rd Enrolled Missouri Militia Regiment (local militia). The 23rd, 31st, and 89th Enrolled Missouri Militia also served in that area. You may wish to consult the local Daviess and Gentry County historical and genealogical societies, the addresses of which you can find at your local library. Bruce Nichols

Talking as I search: Missouri solders named Smith listed on both sides: 2,294 G Smith: 142 R Smith: 63 George: 105 Richard: 14 George W: 41 Looking at a map of northeast Missouri. You have one of the best, yet you do not include George Thomas Scholl. He was the younger brother of Daniel Boone Scholl. As you know the Scholls and many families were very well connected. To name a few..Muir, Hindie, Wallace, and many more. Most of these families names were mis spelled, as I am doing now. Claiborne Scholl Nappier

The information I have on George Roberson/Robinson/Robertson is that he was from Clay County, Missouri. He went to Kentucky with Quantrill and was surrounded by a Major Bridgewater (Union) in Jessamine County, Kentucky. He was charged with killing a Federal officer in Hustonville. He was taken to the prison in louisville, escaped and was recaptured. He was eventually executed in April of 1865 for the killing, although, he was innocent of the charges. Another one of Quantrill's men was also arrested for the killing. Allen Parmer supposedly killed the Federal officer. Dear List Members, If you are interested in knowing about other genealogical mailing list available, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fuller's Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any Rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. If you are having problem and I do not answer you right away, know that I will. I like many of you work full time outside of my home. I am fortunate that I can check my e-mail any time I wish, but know that there are spaces of time I cannot. I always check my e-mail each and every evening and will respond to message as quickly as possible. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. When posting a query regarding a surname it would help all of us if you would put your surname in CAPS. This way the members can easily pick out the surnames you are looking for. On the other hand when the entire message is in CAPS we feel that we are being yelled at. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now, the hardest thing is when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting from one from one of us. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at Kathleen.burnett@era.com or in the evenings at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. 7. If your list has the gateway open, meaning the messages posted on the board also hit he list, know that every once in a while a SPAM message that is caught by the Board filter slips through the gateway and hits the list before it can be stopped. JUST DELETE IT. By responding to the list regarding he offending message, you just continue it on, and there is not one thing I can do about it at that point. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me.
