I was wondering where I can find an account of the Battle of Ringgold Gap? It may be Battle of Ringgold Gap/ Taylor Ridge. There was a campaign there 11/27/1863, I think. I appreciate any help in locating any information on this battle. Janet
Just recently found the newspaper item from the Columbia Statesman, May 2, 1862 issue. Death at Alton. John M. Robert, Jr., son of Dr. William R. Roberts, of Rocheport , died in Alton, Ill., whilst under arrest as a prisoner of war. His disease was consumption. ... His remains were brought to Rocheport by his father and interred at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Errors were made in the names. Dr. John William Roberts has a stone in the Walnut Grove Cemetery, and the name of his son was John William Roberts, Jr. I have found 7 John W. Roberts on the Missouri Civil War listing, but not sure which one would be the correct one. I found one John W. Roberts on the Alton prison list who was a PVT. in Shelbys Missouri, but he was captured in Oct. of 1864 and died in Feb. of 1865. He was buried on State Ground. Another I found in the state archives was in "Col. McKenney's Reg't M.S.G. Condererate. Prisoner." He's listed as a 1st Lt. and in the Mo State Guard. Any help appreciated. Ellie and others who have asked about "The History and Families of Izard County, Arkansas." It is still available!!!! It sells for $59.95 plus $6.00 mailing fee. Mail check to Izard County History Book, P.O. Box 306, Pineville, AR 72566. There is also a School History Book which sells for $30.00 plus $6.00 mailing fee to the same address in this message. I have a copy of the History book and it is very good. The information included in the book was written by family members of the families mentioned in the book. The book by Donald Gilmore got a bit delayed by the drama that hit New Orleans. Pelican Publishing is located in that vicinity, thus the delay from October to December release.....What a Christmas present for all that inquire and a lot of new info. Very controversial I am sure it will be. Claiborne

Oh I dont like these kind of debates.. but yes, Indians have been taken by Euro's as slaves, some were even taken to Europe... as for Indians being slave owners, yes, some were, however, Indians had a hard time with the concept of "owning" people, as much as they could not grasp the concept of "owning" land. Their slaves, were treated as equals... not a lessor class, and even given their own "tribal name" of sorts, like "Cherokee Freedman" which means they had been with the Cherokee and now were Freedmen... other tribes did the same. But not all tribes had slaves, in fact, few tribes had slaves. As far as tribes making slaves of other Indians... never heard about it, I am 46 years old, born into the Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma... learned many stories of my people and of other peoples (my tribe was once part of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) Indians were not perfect, no one was... the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma first began with supporting the confederates, and later switched sides..
