Hello: For what its worth dept: Flags are usually put on headstones by Vetrans Groups Decoration Day. They have records and the Union and Confederate have web sites on the Internet. Units are usually on the stones. Start with area -- time--names and etc. Age or date of birth not always good as the young fellows did not always tell the truth about Their age. I read where one boy's mother signed for Him to enter as a drummer at 12yrs old. Drum and bugle used many youth. Area plays a good part--when the South was near they did recruit work--like when Old Pap Price came through Missouri on His raids-- North thousands joined. Many went without arms to fight with. Many ran away from home and changed their name spelling--some from not knowing. Spelling does not always work. I read where about 70 percent could not read or write. Here in Kansas City Battles --some over 100 thousand men fought. Lots of smoke and bullets "like rain falling". Kansas City had lots of the Missouri battles in and about the area. Same with Quantrill Raiders all about K C. There are Quantrill Raider Stops with stories and names on the net. Think about that--shooting at each other at day and some trading news and tob and visiting together at night. --- readynow22@sbcglobal.net wrote: > I was wondering, did veterans receive, or have to > apply for headstones for their graves if they served > in the civil war? > > Is there a way to look at the headstone and see, or > know if they fought for the union or confederacy? > > Supposedly, my great-great grandfather served and I > was wondering if the stone on his grave is from the > government.? > > I have been unable to find his name in any of the > databases. Hello ALL: Youth how great it is. Nice to have offers for help. Young or old. If nothing else it was nice to get the "Do Nothing but grumblers" "Right watchers and regulators" "nit pickers" off their behinds. Most active its been. Strange how it takes an effort to get anything done. Give them something to do and regulate. Fiddle as the world goes on by. Time and money are assets to all of <US>. A Lot more would get done if more folks would help others in need. "Do into others as You would have them do to You." Right or wrong Thanks for all the offers. Paul D PS^^ BTW I have some relation that was in the C W --(Union) I'm searching for and in need of help. Help that would only take a week or two of research to get. Some travel involved. Looking for an expert with nothing to do that would like to be of help "free to Me". Free and no cost to Me--please contact--Must be accurate. I agree with Brian and it is refreshing to know that she is making an effort to repay her loans, and at the same time helping others who are not able to do the footwork. Virgene in northwest Indiana Ditto, Brian. I am quite sure some of our ancestors were in Military Services, so her offer to help is quite reasonable and pertinent to helping folks research. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian G. Go to the following link for information on research access, including cards: http://www.archives.gov/research/start/researcher-card.html This link: http://www.archives.gov/research/hire-help/ discusses hiring someone to do research at the National Archives and also discusses how to get on the list published by the Archives (Kelley might wish to do that). Hope this helps someone. I am thinking you are thinking about George W. Janet, As a suggestion, you might next time, when you have the opportunity introduce Kelley as a 'researcher' for you which might keep her with the within unwritten rules (that would keep her out of trouble, while trying to make her available to us on the list) ...this introduction would add to Kelley's credibility as a researcher, telling us what she does/can do for those of us who are not so close to the National Archives. Also, Perhaps allow Kelley to tell us what other requirement that are required of her by the National Archives to go into their establishment and do her digging...I'm sure there are some other 'official' things that Kelley must be required to do to go 'into the stacks' and do research required by the National Archives...which would also lend creditability to Kelley and enlighten the rest of us what some of the proceedures that researchers, since we may never get to do this, have to perform to be able to go in and do research...all of which would make some on the list be more apt to want Kelley to work for them....I know they just don't allow anyone to go into those documents and push paper around since this is a national institution. Just a thought. Janet, Thank you so much for the suggestion. Like Brian, I was unaware that I could be registered. Todd M George was one of Quantrill's lieutenants. He was mortally wounded at a battle near the Little Blue River and Independence, Missouri, on 10/21/64. He was indicted in 1863 for the murder of George Burt at Lawrence, Kansas. Like anything having to do with the Kansas/Missouri War, your opinion of how accurate it is has a lot to do with your general feelings about that war. Long ago someone on this list was working on a list of soldiers at Lone Jack. I probably mentioned it before, but the list should include members of the 8th Battalion Missouri Infantry, including Samuel Burton McFerrin and his father, Jackson Benton McFerrin (M380 roll 10). Samuel Burton went on to be reorganized with the 8th Battalion into the 9th Missouri Regiment. His father stayed in Cass County, where he was murdered. Hello. I understand your concern about people potentially being conned. I can only reiterate what I said in my initial email. I'm just trying to help with some school costs by doing research that I love doing! And, it's coincidental that you mention public health because that's what I am getting my masters in at GWU here in DC. I'm willing to answer any questions that people may have. I would ask that people email me off-list with questions or concerns. Thanks. Kelley On 1/31/06, j wood <woojaq@yahoo.com> wrote: > > It would be nice to believe everything you read. I'm a college grad student in Washington, DC. Recently, I have been doing some personal family research at the Archives, and realized that I could be doing this for people at a much quicker pace than the people at the Archives. Ditto, Brian. I am quite sure some of our ancestors were in Military Services, so her offer to help is quite reasonable and pertinent to helping folks research. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Brian G.
