Let's do more than chit chat about this and take some action: Write the governor, Congressman, Senators, Dept. of Natural Resources, etc. Governor Bob Holden Missouri Capitol Building Room 218 P.O. Folks, All of the grumbling against taking the flag down is, just that, grumbling. To really make a difference, there needs to be petitions circulated and sent to Gephardt and Holden saying that we Missourians will not tolerate an attack on our heritage and it is at the polls where we can, and will, make a difference. That is what they understand. All the grumbling and moaning in the world won't change what's happened and what will continue to happen, unless we, the people, do something to change it. There is no better place for the Confederate flag than on a Confederate Memorial, it's up to us to see that it's returned to its rightful place. Don't just grumble.do something about it!! Alinda M. Since we have been in wars with England, France, Germany, Italy, Iraq, Viet Nam, and the list goes on and on, we, the people who have suffered because of these wars demand that you give equal disdain and discretion against the flags of all of our former enemies. The glorious Stars and Stripes, may the flag ever wave, should not have to look down on any flag that American blood was shed in destroying the evil that it stood for. Please give equal attention to this matter. An American veteran. ===== Harry S. Thomas (Stan.) [email protected] __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Though not a Missouri issue as such, I think it is related to the Confederate battle flag controversy. Are the members of this list aware that the National Park Service is bowing to "political correctness" by attempting to erect a statue of Abraham Lincoln in the Richmond, Virginia park honoring Confederate heroes? Information and a petition to prevent that travesty can be found at http://www.petitiononline.com/noabe/petition.html Bill Morgan Kansas City, Kansas
Gephardt says the Battle Flag has no place flying anywhere. Tell that to all of the Southern black soldiers who served proudly under it, a little known and largely ignored historical fact. I don't know that such was the case in Missouri specifically, but there sure were in other parts of the South. Maybe the cemetery just needs to replace the flag with a specifically Missouri Confederate battle flag and see what happens then. Kathleen in Kansas City

I was just telling my husband yesterday that they don't want God in our schools or in government any more, but they approve of people using such foul language on tv like the language that the Osborne's used on those awards the other night on tv. It is really a sad statement about our great nation. Charlotte
David, I'm sorry you missed the beginnings of this, but from my view it has been mainly on the removing of a flag ... any flag, for any cause for which our soldiers died for, and history right or wrong, it is our history and next they will removing our history books. Already they are attempting to take "In God We Trust" out of our Government, and one by one we are loosing the very things, again right or wrong, that our country stands for. I'm not voicing my opinion on the Civil War ... but like most, I have family that died and fought in it on both sides, right or wrong, they believed in what they fought for, as did our men and women from WWI, WWII, and VietNam. To dishonor any of them is an injustice to our country and what it stands for. One man, who isn't the President only a candidate, was able to accomplish removale of flags placed how many years ago? Lets not forget it only took one man to destroy another nation and people ... Hitler.
Subject: MO-CW-D Digest V03 #9 The digest had a number of interesting messages and observations, and I'll not comment on all of them. Unfortunately, I hadn't seen the original article about Congressman Gebhardt, or know what the current issue of flag-flying is about. I do know that for many, many of our citizens, seeing a Confederate battle flag is a reminder of those who fought in a cause that would have kept them in bondage -- even if well-intentioned and sincere. The discussion of this issue has always been divisive among us, and I for one would welcome it if our list host would declare it off-limits, but that's Joe's call, not mine, and I respect him. What I do have to object to, though, is the message below which (1) suggests that having a job with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, in which I as a white person hold membership, would be disgraceful. An esteemed Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall -- now on U.S. postage stampts -- held that top position, and I think it deserves respect rather than slander. (2) I seriously doubt that the Communist Party is interested in having Dick Gebhardt as president; they have always put up a candidate of their own, ludicrous though their platforms may be. If the writer has any evidence of what looks to me to be an outlandish claim, I would welcome reading it. Otherwise, this is just a red-baiting smear, and again I think this is not the forum for such vitriol. This is not just for Missouri but for all the southern states that WERE flying the Confederate Flag. After all it was ours, yours, and their ancestors who fought for what they believed in at the time. Regardless, history is history and should be supported as such.
