    3. I want to thank everyone who has responded to my question. This is such a great list. I do have another question but I am not sure if I will word it correctly. Here goes. I was wondering if there is any way to pinpoint any information on this regiment on the individual who was in it? Particular my great grandfather Naril Politte. (Sorry about the mistake below...I meant great grandfather) Perhaps on some of the individual fights/skirmishes they had. Thank you for your help. 1. [MO-CW] More on Camp Benton
    2. Scott K. Williams
    3. I have been able to add more accounts and graphics to the webpage on Benton Barracks. Now I have some unique perspectives as well as 1875 illustrated images of the Fairgrounds park area. One passage comes from an 1863 account of F.F. Kiner, 14th Iowa Infantry. Also much more on the conditions of the Colored Troops, freedmen (or refugee slaves) living at the camp. The American Memory website gave me images which I converted to gif files, then merged into larger images. Many of the roads have changed names so it has taken some detective work in identifying in understanding the boundaries of Camp Benton. (I have also added a link to wonderful Pictorial St. Louis map at the Library of Congress.) Benton Barracks (alias Camp Benton, St. Louis, Missouri) http://www.missouricivilwarmuseum.org/benton.htm As always, if you have any additional information we are anxious for more. Enjoy, Scott Williams, http://www.missouricivilwarmuseum.org/

    3. Just uploaded a revised page on Benton Barracks. This was an important military base, hospital and contraband/refugee slave camp located now within the city limits of St. Louis, Missouri. Many Union regiments, including U.S. Colored troops, were organized, trained or stationed here during the Civil War. Today the Benton Barracks site remains forgotten and unmarked. Included are photos of the site as it appears today. http://www.missouricivilwarmuseum.org/benton.htm If anyone has information to contribute, I would be happy to hearing from you. Scott K. 3. Hagerstown, Md. -- The Civil War movie Gods and Generals won't include scenes of the Battle of Antietam, the war's bloodiest one-day clash, director Ronald Maxwell says. Those scenes, shot in 2001, were cut to bring the film's running time to three hours and 35 minutes, maxwell told an audience in Shepherdstown, W.Va., last week. Gods and Generals, a prequel to Maxwell's 1993 epic, Gettysburg, stars Jeff Daniels, Robert Duvall and Chris Conner. Maxwell said the Antietam battle, fought near Sharpsburg, Md., in 1862, will be included in a six-hour DVD version of the film. AP Desoto Joe/The Record Man

    3. -------------fly it who wants to so what does the opposition gain??? ----For many years past, only Southern "red-necks" have flown the Stars and Bars from their pick-up trucks, their cross-country tractor-trailers and from their front yards except when it was flown as an historical symbol of what took place in this nation a hundred and forty years ago. ----Now there has been a surge of "political correctness" that is aimed at removing the emblem from all the places where it was only historical. This ill conceived surge of emotion by that bunch of self styled do-gooders that gathers and questions each other, "What can we do today to stir up the pot???" will only cause more people in all stratas of society to demand the right to display the Stars and Bars as an expression of the rights of citizens to not be controlled by a minority of narrow-minded people without the sense to involve themselves in matters of importance all around us that need their attention. ----I predict that the flying of the Stars and Bars will soon be "the thing to do" by men and women, all over the nation, that are fighting against the encroachment of their rights and the unconstitutional-the violations of the First Ammendment at the very least--actions of a few and the political hacks that follow them. ===== Harry S. 2. Desoto Joe/The Record Man
    3. Saturday, February 8, 2003 Poll: Missourians support displays of Confederate flag at historic sites ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Two-thirds of Missourians oppose the recent decision by Missouri officials to take down the Confederate flag at two state historic sites where the flag has flown for decades, according to a new poll. Of the 603 Missourians participating in the poll commissioned by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 45 percent said they "strongly disagreed" with the state's decision to no longer fly the flag. An additional 21 percent said they "somewhat disagreed" with the decision. Only 30 percent said they agreed with Gov. Bob Holden and others -- including Republican Sens. Kit Bond and Jim Talent and Democratic Rep. Dick Gephardt -- that the flag should no longer fly, according to the poll by Zogby International of Utica, N.Y. The poll's error margin was 4.1 percentage points. The telephone poll was conducted last Saturday and Sunday. Almost three of every four persons polled outstate opposed taking down the Confederate flag. In the St. Louis area, more than half of those surveyed backed the flag including retired union bookkeeper Patricia Pijut and insurance broker Tom Martin. They cite history as the reason for flying the Confederate flag. Pijut said it is appropriate to allow the flag to fly at Civil War sites and cemeteries. "There was a Confederate army. We can't change history," she said. Martin accused the Confederate flag's critics of "rewriting history to make it politically correct." But those who object to flying the flag said the issue isn't its history, but its role as a symbol. "I don't think symbols of division are anything that we should be promoting," said Alveta Nelson, a St. Louis teacher. Nelson said she was not surprised that she is among the minority in the poll. She added that she was not swayed by the argument of flag defenders that the Confederate flag has flown at the Missouri sites for decades. "Just because something has been done for a long period of time doesn't make it right," Nelson said. "Slavery went on for a long time, and that wasn't right." Missouri's dispute over the flag has attracted national attention, with some seeing it as a spinoff of the ongoing controversy in South Carolina over the flag. Gephardt, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004, touched off the matter while campaigning recently in South Carolina. He declared that the Confederate flag had no business flying anywhere. At the time, Gephardt was not aware that the flag flew at two sites in Missouri, but he added later that he stuck by his view. Gephardt's stance attracted the attention of Missouri officials, including his longtime ally, Holden, and the Missouri flags came down. Since then, Confederate-flag backers have rallied outside the governor's mansion and pressed for a reversal. But Talent and Bond, both Republicans, have sided with Holden on the flag -- raising questions of how much of a political issue it will be in next year's statewide elections.
