    3. Along this line, I would like to tell everyone about a project that my daughter-in-law told me about being in when she was in the 8th grade. It was called Junior Historians and participation was not required. They did meet during school time, during off periods, etc. At the beginning of the year, the sponsoring teacher took the students to the local cemetery in Lampasas, TX which is very historic. They each chose 5 graves and couldn't chose one that was already chosen by someone else. From then on, for the rest of the school year, it was that students responsibility to keep "their" graves clean and neat and to learn as much as possible about that person and the time period they lived in. At Memorial Day, shop students (maybe High School) made each student 5 small wooden crosses. The students painted them white and stenciled in black paint; the Veteran's name, Military information, date of birth and death and placed them at Veterans graves. They could be among their original group or any other they wanted to include. I was very impressed with this idea. For one thing, it sparked a life long interest in Cemeteries and History with her. I'm sure the experience had a simular effect on the other students. Plus, she knows more local History than most young people do. I would like to see this extended to include all students. Maybe not to this degree of participation. But even inner city schools are usually within walking distance of an old Historic Cemetery. Even if it didn't seem to be making an impression at the time, I feel it would later. If just a spark of respect could be aroused in these teens, perhaps we wouldn't be seeing the deplorable vandalism. What do others think about this?
