Dear Kathleen and List, I am know there are plenty of grave sites that need some TLC. Just take a drive in the country and you can see them. It seems that the first thing that would to be done is to find an area that is centrally located by our "local" list members and meanwhile we can ponder on step 2. I, for one am handicapped but I sure pour a mean cup of coffee *smile*. A good place to start is Call the Boy Scout Org. and tell them if they have Scouts needing a good cause to earn merit badges, perhaps this would be a good deed for them to participate in. Then contact other organizations,Like the Elks, Lion, an perhaps churches. I know that the L.D.S. church has participated in a lot of community project such as this. I have offered a small contribution to them, as I too am handicapped and on a very limited budget. It might work . Won't hurt. Gladys in Beautiful AZ. Gladys, Thank you for reminding folks about the Boy Scouts! As the mom of an Eagle Scout I know that Boy Scout troops are always looking for good and interesting service projects. Cleaning up an old cemetary that has fallen into disrepair is something that has the potential to make a great service project for a boy trying to earn his Eagle Scout rank. This is something folks may want to remember when contacting their local scout councils. Helping boys find service projects that fit the criteria for Eagle Service projects can sometimes be difficult so suggestions are always welcome. In the case of cemetaries I would ask to be put directly in touch with the scout executive for that particular district, and then ask if he knows of a scoutmaster in his district who may have a Life Scout looking for an Eagle service project or who would possibly be interested in tackling such a project as a troop. Believe me if he knows his district at all he will know which scoutmasters to have you call. For those who may not know scout councils are all listed in the phone book under Boy Scouts of America, that way if you don't know the name you can still find them easily. This sounds like a great idea! And heaven knows, Coffee is the most important primary ingredient in any good project. :) It sounds like we're strating a project. Okay, I'll start it off - where is "locally," and how many interested people do we have in one fairly close aera? I'm in SE Kansas City, and for the actual clean-up and refurbishment work I'll go as far as Leavenworth , KS, or Warrensburg, MO. Where are all y'all? List Mom - can we keep posting about his here? Or would you rather we did it in private e -mail. It is sorta on topic, but I think it might get out of boundaries a little. Is this gonna be okay? Also, galdys in AZ's suggestions about getting Boy Scouts, Elks, and LDS involved are good. Once we zeore in on a location, we could also tap local genealogical and histoircal societies, Girl Scouts, local Vet organisaitons, if we know there is a veteran's grave, etc. Kathleen ----- Original Message ----- From: Victoria <Flower2@sofnet.com> To: <MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 07, 2001 1:51 AM Subject: Re: [MO-CEM] Cemeteries in disrepair > Dear Kathleen and List, > > I am know there are plenty of grave sites that need some TLC.
