Sorry I'm running several days behind. In reference to the following: [quote] Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 08:45:47 -0600 From: kimbuc@juno.com To: MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MO-CEM] Re: Fink(e)/Finks Dave, The GNIS site labels the cemetery as FINKS, this would not be the first time they have things wrong, with the coordinates of 384100N0912035W [endquote] I don't particularly blame the mapmakers. They probably made local inquiry, and talked to the "wrong" branch of the family. The eldest of my grandfather's brothers, Henry Jr., alone amongst his sisters and brothers, decided to drop the final "e" from "Finke". That's his choice, of course, but it became a problem when he told the 1920 census takers that his mother and other brothers' names also were spelled "Fink". It was on a fluke that I found them all, duly mis-spelled, in that census. But in modern times, at least our great-grandmother's name is correctly entered on her tombstone in the St.John's cemetery in Berger. And, you can see how great-uncle Henry and his son "Paddy" kept the mis-spelling on their tombstones. Of course, it was all "legal" -- just confusing. We human beings are a funny lot. Best wishes, David Hadley Finke (son of Hadley E. Finke, grandson of Emil H. Finke, all born in Berger.)
