    1. [MO-CEM] Cemetery near Berger, Missouri

    3. From: David H Finke <dfinke@coin.org> To: MOFRANKL-D@rootsweb.com Subject: Know of this cemetery? My father's father's father was a civil war veteran (Union: 31st Mo. Vol. Inf.) who was buried on land that he farmed after the war, at Berger, MO. He was Henry (Heinrich) Finke, and his son Edward had the land after he, and my great-grandmother Mary (Maria) Finke lived with them until her death in 1932. Edward was father to Elda, who married Forrest Forderhase, still living in Berger, who still owns that land. This weekend I was looking at a USGS mapping program on the Internet, and in curiosity homed in on Berger (you can just give a town name; don't have to know coordinates), and went looking at the old family land. As I zoomed in to the highest resolution (1 inch = 200 yards) there on the topographical map, to my amazement, popped up the words "Fink Cem." on the wooded bluff to the north of the land where their house was. (The house is still there, clearly visible in the comparable aerial photo, right above the railroad tracks on the bluff, first building north of town.) This burial site had been known in the family (and perhaps elsewhere?) as "The Indian Mound," and indeed when several years ago we were prowling up there, we saw what appears to be an ancient burial site, pre-European. We haven't yet found great-grandfather's grave, tho we see stones of people with cousins' names (e.g. "Zeugin"). Others are buried in the more accessible St. John's cemetery nearer to town, on County "B". But this is the first time I've seen acknowledgement on a USGS map that the cemetery was connected with my family. I think I've missed it on other indexes because my great-uncle, the firstborn, Henry II, changed the spelling of the family name, dropping the final "e" -- and even had the 1920 census-taker erroneously list his mother that way, along with Uncle Ed's family! (This has caused a major family split, over the years, apparently, with rumors of gravestones having been altered.) Does anyone else reading this Franklin County list know of "The Indian Mound" (about a mile straight north of Berger) being referred to as "The Fink(e) Cemetery"? ============== David Hadley Finke 1106 Maplewood Drive Columbia, MO 65203 ===============

    3. David - I'm puzzled! Were you viewing the USGS Topo map, or the Ortho-Photo aerial photo? I tried both images of "Berger" at the highest resolution (200 yards), and could not find the Fink cemetery - only a legend for "Methodist cemetery". And of course, the Ortho Photo did not have any kind of legends or text to identify the features. Can you tell me what you were viewing, and how to find the details that you found? Thanks.
