Another year and another plea. I am still looking for my grandparents. They may have been in the Springfield area at one time. Both were deaf mutes, so any schools in that area would be appreciated. Joseph Jenkins, d. late 1940's, married, 4 children, 1 daughter and 3 sons. Later moved to Kansas City, MO area. Any info would be appreciated as my puter crashed with several posts stored. Included was one with a couple of schools for the deaf listed. Thanks, Maureen
There is a large school in the Central West End of St louis MO that teaches the deaf. It is located behind Barnes Hospital on Euclid Ave. I dont have the name of it, but I am sure if you called Barnes hospital in St Louis on Kingshighway/Euclid they could give you that information. ----- Original Message ----- From: Maureen Patt <knitandspin@earthlink.net> To: <MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 30, 2001 9:01 PM Subject: [MO-CEM] Jenkins > Another year and another plea. I will do some checking for you. I have several deaf adult friends that may be able to help. Do you know if Joseph Jenkins went a church? The Babtist and Assembly of God have had deaf ministries for 50 years in Springfield. I don't believe that public schools in this area provided access for deaf students. I called my dad who attend public school in in the early 40's and he does not recall having any deaf classmates. I have a friend who runs deaf ministry at AG. I will ask him if he knows of private schools for the deaf in the area at that time. He will ask me if you know that they were literate. Do you know what jobs they held or where they worked while in Springfield? Do you know if they have a social security number? If so, you can go here: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl First enter the name of the list to search the archives by year. Entering "deaf school" or simular as key word should bring up the message. (and the e-mail address of the poster) This is a great way to find information and contacts on surnames also. Good luck! The Missouri State School for the Deaf is located at Fulton, MO, it was started in the 1800's, as I remember around 1850's. If they attended the School at Fulton, there should be records there. They had students from over the entire state of MO. In the late 1930's there was a private school for the deaf in Kansas City, this school, being private charged a high tuiton that my parents were unable to pay but the State school was free with dorms where the students lived. The parents were supposed to pay for the students uniforms. In the late 1930's there was a private school for the deaf in Kansas City. this school, being private charged a high tuiton that my parents were unable to pay. There was also a private deaf school in St. Louis. I know nothing about it since it was on the other side of the state from where we lived. There have usually been a large number of deaf people who settle in the KC area. I always thought it was because of the deaf schools in the area. The Kansas School for the Deaf is located at Olathe, KS, a very short distance from KS.
