Number one remember MO. is one of the state where Civil war deaths were ordered not to be recorded(talked about) marked burials frequently had no dates. Supposedly there is a difference round top markers Union , pointed markers confederate. I am sure this is a wags story but? But I do know locally markers were not ingraved until after the war, even on civilians. So finding his service record CSR at the state Archives(adj. Generals records are moved to Archives. A phone call will get you the record mailed to you. -----Original Message----- From: mo-cemeteries-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mo-cemeteries-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Orlena Sent: Friday, July 06, 2007 4:52 PM To: mo-cemeteries@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MO-CEMETERIES] Headstone pictures - Benjamin B. We just went out yesterday and took 1499 photos of Maple Park cem here in Springfield MO. Hay were 3/4 the way done. I forget real easy that's due to the MS, but I keep plugging away at sending copies of these headstones to the ones that need them. real picky about that too. We recently bought a new digital camera and are wanting to make pictures of headstones for our records. Hopefully, we'll get proficient enough to make pictures of stones for others as RAGK. My question of the list is: What would be some hints, suggestions, cautions, things TO do as well as NOT to do, etc. Are there those of you who have made such pictures with really good results as well as not so good results? We are wanting to "give back" to the public some of the help that has been given us through the years with our genealogy and thought this would be appropriate. Eager to hear from you. My brother is a member of the SCV and he said that's the way it was. I have been to several SCV memorials and all of the Confederate stones are pointed on the top. In fact, in Quincy, IL there is a Confederate Cemetery and all of the stones there are pointed. In a couple of our local cemeteries there are both pointed and round and, if you look at the engravings on them, you will see that the Union stones are round and the Confederate are pointed. And they are engraved with dates and other information like who they served with. I have a gggUncle who was Confederate and his brother, my gggrandfather, was Union. Both survived the Civil War and after the war they bought land side by side. By the way......I'm in Missouri. Shirly >
