You wouldn't get the children's name, but you would get the parent and the number of children in school. These are available at other dates than just the every 10 years of the censuses. Also if you know of any unusual circumstances such as divorce, early death of parent/parents, you might find some info in guardianship papers. I tend to not trust the census records when I find a conflict like this---I've just found too many mistakes on them. I try to use them more as a guide than as absolute fact. I too have found some strange name spellings as well as weird nicknames--I have one listed as "Pomp" which I still haven't figured out! Good luck.
