    3. Helen, You have GOT to be kidding me! I also have a double Smith situation. Jonathon Nickles Smith (PA) who married Mary Josephine Kneedy (IL) and they had a daughter, Ella Janetta Smith (Iowa). Ella Janetta married a man named Ernest Geraldine Bruce (Iowa) in which THEY had a daughter Mabel Bruce (Iowa) who married Luther Allen Smith (MO). This Luther's father, is the John W. Smith (OH) of which I was looking for mentioned below. Yes, it is crazy. Those Smith's make me crazy. Family lore has it the Mary Kneedy was disinherited by her Pennsylvania Dutch parents for running away with Jonathon Nickles Smith and so, yep - you guessed it, never saw their families again. And further, that John W. Smith must have a very shady background as he told his children some cockamamie story about how he came from Ireland as a little boy with his family after his father (name unknown) was murdered due to the father being a member of the Parliament (a supposed political killing). John W. Smith claimed they changed their last name TO Smith when they signed in on the boat. Now I realize that in Ireland the last name McGowan has often translated into the name Smith in the U.S.A. But census records say he was born in Ohio and both parents were born in "America". I'm like, OK - big deal and not helpful. John W. Smith's last child (out of 4-all born in Missouri) was born after they started keeping birth records and it also says John W. Smith was born in Ohio. So, I am going with Ohio. My grandmother, Mabel Bruce (who married John W's son Luther) could not remember John's mother's name but believed she had settled in Sedalia, MO. Seems there was a teenage murder by one of the Bruce boys but the extended families from Iowa refuse to talk about it. Have no idea what went wrong there.......just confusion all over the place. These families all cut each other off from communication...so true stories got passed along and they didn't even get together so grandkids could meet their grandparents. We do have quick and determined tempers - I'll say that. One time I went 10 years without talking to my parents. We're a pretty hot headed bunch and we claim the market on dysfunctional! Ernest Bruce and John W. both ran away from home in their teens so neither one of them had good father examples to learn from. Stubborn, stubborn, stubborn. I'd like to thank both of you ladies for listening to my story. Hope you can follow it alright. Nuts, nuts, nuts.
