Where was that cemtery you saved Dee? There are several small ones up by the airport toward Hampton and the old Tiffany Springs Hotel. As I understand it, no graveyard of any size can be bulldozed or paved over in any manner, but I'm a fraid I can't quote statue and reg. on that. That's why the old Barry cemetery sits in the middle of yukkie urban sprawl now. There is also a small cemetery at Metro North mall by the Dead Lobster... Can someone please fill me in on Mo. laws regarding graves being destroyed. My situation is as follows About 150 years ago my ggg grandfather died and was buried on his farm property with a tombstone marking the grave. Later his wife and some slaves were also burried there, but there are no markings for their graves. The tombstone has since fallen down but has been cemented together so it can be read even though it is flat on the ground. The property has sold two to three times over the years but no one has attempted to destroy the graves until now. The person that now owns the property says she is going to put concrete over the grave sites and sell the property for $110,000. The relatives would like to see the graves preserved, but it would be difficult to pay that much for the property. It is my understanding that there are laws about this but I am not sure about the details. There was a fence around the graves, but it has fallen and is completely gone. There is no way that a fence could be erected at this time without trespassing on the owners property. I have been told that if there is fence this makes it more of a crime to destroy the graves. If anyone has some suggestions for me I would appreciate them Eleanor

Margaret, Have you ever heard of the Deilstadt Cemetery. It was suppose to be located South of the city. A old farmer told me once that it was plowed under some thirty-forty years ago. My gg-grandfather, Matthew Hindman is buried there. Steven Harris
Hello Maureen, Since you have had computer problems, I will paste in a message I sent to you around Thanksgiving. It might be the one you remember. Judy Are you sure that your grandparents attended a school for the deaf in Missouri? Since you mention Kansas City, I thought you might need to know about the Kansas School for the Deaf at Olathe, Kansas, a KC suburb. My g-grandmother attended school there in the 1880s when it was the Kansas Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb. I have contacted them by email and in person and they were very helpful either way. They gave me a photocopy of her admission application which gave a lot of information, cause and term of deafness, health and intelligence, parents' and brother's names and birthdates, mother's death, family financial information, guardian after father left Kansas. Unfortunately, the space for a picture and description of her were blank. The lady at KSD told me they were planning to open a museum and had many items and photos boxed up, but when I visited late in 1999, the museum was on hold for lack of funding.
Eleanor, I don't really know what the laws are but my friend and I successfully stopped a contractor from leveling a small cemetery in Platte County. I sent a email to the Historical Society explaining what was happening with the cemetery. Before we knew it the contractors plans had changed big time. There are only about 6 graves there. But it is very old early 1800's. Hope that this helps you. The Missouri School for the Deaf is at Fulton, MO. Have you tried there?Jeanette
Patty, I looked up both George & Thomas Bridges in the indexes of Scott County Cemeteries and neither is listed. Sorry. Margaret ******* Scott County Cemeteries I dont think a look up would help, as I just wanted to look for some Bridges who may have something like George Bridges, father of Thomas Bridges or something of that nature. I have NO idea on what cemetery he would be in, so it would all be "grabbing at straws", and I dont want you to have to do that. I was hoping to find the book, and make copies of Bridges buried in that area, (scott & pemiscott) . I cant find any family for my Thomas Warren Bridges, and I have NO idea where else to look. This guy didnt leave much of a paper trail behind. He goes back and forth from Scott county to Pemiscott. Earliest I find him is 1870 in Scott (that is where he always takes his women to marry them!) Thanks for the offer, Patty

I will do some checking for you. I have several deaf adult friends that may be able to help. Do you know if Joseph Jenkins went a church? The Babtist and Assembly of God have had deaf ministries for 50 years in Springfield. I don't believe that public schools in this area provided access for deaf students. I called my dad who attend public school in in the early 40's and he does not recall having any deaf classmates. I have a friend who runs deaf ministry at AG. I will ask him if he knows of private schools for the deaf in the area at that time. He will ask me if you know that they were literate. Do you know what jobs they held or where they worked while in Springfield? Do you know if they have a social security number? There is a large school in the Central West End of St louis MO that teaches the deaf. Looking for the cemetery where John SHELLEY is buried. The Census records 1850-1880 has him in St Francois county Mo, born abt 1818 and death abt 1885. Also would be interested in where he was born, the Census state he was born in Mo. Thank in advance Sam

pmoorep66@hotmail.com No, the two volume set is out of print but I do look-ups. Just today I strongly suggested to the DAR it would be most beneficial if they would reprint the 2 volume set. It goes to 1983 and some cemeteries are missing but it is the best out there at this time. What cemetery and name are you looking for? I am a member of the Scott County Historical and Genealogy Society and would be happy to try and help you. Also would like to know if anyone can tell me the address of Genealogy Society for Scott county? I am looking for information on the Bridges family that lived in that area, and was wondering if anyone has this book and could scan me copies of any Bridges or even snail mail them to me, I would be more than happy to send them money for postage and copies. > pmoorep66@hotmail.com > > > ==== MO-CEMETERIES Mailing List ==== > Checkout the other lists being watched over by your List Mom; > http://mailing_lists.homestead.com/lists.html > To learn more about my world visit http://dwp.bigplanet.com/kburnett > Vist the Mo-Cemeteries Volunteer and Cemetery List http://www.rootsweb.com/~mocemete/mocem.htm > > ============================== > Join the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project: > Linking the world, one GEDCOM at a time. > http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com > ______________________________
People in Cline's Island would most likely be buried in Walker Cemetery, Stoddard County, MO or in Bloomfield. There is the possibility that they could have also been buried in Dexter or in Sikeston which is Scott Co., MO Regards, Margaret Cline Harmon -----Original Message----- From: OPEIHUM@aol.com [mailto:OPEIHUM@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, January 27, 2001 5:48 PM To: MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MO-CEM] Re: MO-CEMETERIES-D Digest V01 #9 Clines Island is west of Sikeston in Stoddard county. It had two settlements when I was a young boy, 1, The store called Clines Island on the northwest end of the island where the river split, and 2, Birds Corner on the east side of the island. I think that today county roads "Y" and "AB" run along the northeast side and CR 581 on the southwest side. The island is about 2 miles long. I went hunting there as a boy but do not remember seeing any cemeteries. Regards, Curt Johnson Bartlesville, OK ______________________________
