I'm looking for information on Fairmont Cemetery, Cape Girardeau, MO. I would appreciate an address, if you have one. Is there a caretaker/office? Is this a large cemetery? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. LIZ
The Missouri State School for the Deaf is located at Fulton, MO, it was started in the 1800's, as I remember around 1850's. If they attended the School at Fulton, there should be records there. They had students from over the entire state of MO. In the late 1930's there was a private school for the deaf in Kansas City, this school, being private charged a high tuiton that my parents were unable to pay but the State school was free with dorms where the students lived. The parents were supposed to pay for the students uniforms. In the late 1930's there was a private school for the deaf in Kansas City. this school, being private charged a high tuiton that my parents were unable to pay. There was also a private deaf school in St. Louis. I know nothing about it since it was on the other side of the state from where we lived. There have usually been a large number of deaf people who settle in the KC area. I always thought it was because of the deaf schools in the area. The Kansas School for the Deaf is located at Olathe, KS, a very short distance from KS. Doniphan is in Ripley County, MO. Ripley County was the mother county of several others in the area when they were split off from her in 1845-46. Saw the town "Grandby".. Brought back memories. I have a map of Newton Co., Cemeteries. It shows 95 cemeteries but I know that not every cemeterie is on the map. Around Ritchey, Mo. it shows Van Buren Union Cem., Nimmo Cem., Wormington Cem., Pybern Cem., Boaz Cem., Cook Cem., Berwick Cem., Roseborough Cem., and Clear Creek Cem. I know a lot of Ritchey's people are buried at Newtonia, Mo. in Newton Co. They are Newtonia 100F Cem. on Hwy. V, ( If you go there watch out, believe it or not we were there a year ago Feb. and there was still snow on the ground and it was bitterly cold and we got into a nest of copper heads. They were sunning and they were trying to bite)., Old Civil War Cem.,and the Newtonia Cem. Fred D. Edens Pat Short wrote: > I found a Cemetery this years in Ritchey Mo. I'm from Newton Co., Mo. and sister your right. My wife and I were taking data from a cemeterie in Ritchey, Mo. So I thought that I would be nice and ask the land owner if we get come on her property to take the data. Well as I was walking up to her door. The door swung open and there was a large lady standing in the door way, STARK NAKED!!! She just stood there well I was between the car and her front porch. I looked at my wife and shrudded my shoulders, wondering what on earth to do. My wife jumped over the wind shield to block our children's view. She stood there for what seemed to be 3 or 4 minutes. She finally shut the door and put some clothes on. She let us go through the cemeterie on her land. But I just couldn't look her in the face when talking to her. Oh yes there is a nursing home in our home town of Granby. It's called Granby House. It's on S. Main in Granby, where the old Granby School use to stand. Fred D. Edens Becky Quinn wrote: > First of all you are in Newton County, well known for unusual characters who tend to be inhospitable. All you normal folks in Newton county don't need to email me. Let me ask a couple of questions and give you some suggestions. Is the nearby church active? If so, find out how to contact the churches minister. If he has been there any time he will have heard story or rumors. Next, try a nearby senior center. Granby should have a senior center. You could contact the Area Agency on Aging housed in Joplin to get location and times. Most of these area agencies are online. Best time to go is lunch time. Old-timers love to talk. See if you see a nearby nursing home. Write to the activity director and ask her to put your question in the residents monthly newsletter to see if any resident would talk to you. Were you able to get any dates with names from the stones to check obits. This is and was mining country. Look at old abstracts to see who owned property contiguous with the church. Someone at the courthouse can tell you the names and probably the # of area geneoligist who may know details or might even go with you and others to make up a larger group. If you are really scared go by the sheriffs office, tell him/her your concern and let them know when you're going and expect to be back. Also take your cell phone and find out to contact the dispatcher. Go with tools and work fast. Take a camera too. First of all you are in Newton County, well known for unusual characters who tend to be inhospitable. The close by town of Granby might have had a weekly newspaper at the turn of the last century. Don't forget to check in Neosho. Also, while you are at the sheriffs find out if crime records that far back are archived somewhere. Remember also that that area had numerous small civil war skirmishes. Neighbors were divided often fighting against each other for years after the end of the war. A final warning:the Ozarks is well known for it hills and hollers that hide many things. Use to be stills but now its meth labs and marijuana patches not to mention hate groups compounds so start with the easiest methods first. I am curious, who is the webmaster for the richey site? Have you contacted that person? ----- Original Message ----- From: Pat Short To: MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, February 01, 2001 10:35 AM Subject: [MO-CEM] Ritchey MO abandoned Cemetery and Humpherys , Blackfox Van buren Cemetery I found a Cemetery this years in Ritchey Mo. I was look for the Humpherys Cemetery in Ritchey MO. where my Mauller were suppose to be buried. I was told Humphreys cem.is over by Wentworth MO, it is called Blackfox by the old timers or Van buren by the younger generation. Never found my Maullers, graves, why do they change cemeteries name ? They should not be able to. My Maullers died in 1925 and 1930. there Obit says Humpherys Cemetery. On or way to find Humpherys Cemetery an Older lady told us of a cemetery in the woods my the Holiness Church in Ritchey, and pointed to the woods. So we went beside the Church. Across the way were 3 men , so we ask them about the cemetery. They had no idea what it was called, they said it had been abandoned for years, and that it was so old that no one visited it, and as far as they could remember. They said they played in it as children, we ask if we could go up in there, they said you cant find anything but a few stones because the brush and trees covered them, and most were on the ground. It was quite scary in there just me and my husband. We were a little frightened of the men, they looked like red necks, and they were drinking. We remembered that the Little old lady told of one of the men telling her he dug into one of the graves and found nothing. We continued to dig with our hands and found some tombstones, some you could not read and some we could, they were all over 100 years old laying on the ground, it made us sick. We found one Dunne and another that said Moller pretty close to Mauller. but my husband said we had better get out of there, he was spooked by the men near by and us all alone in the woods. The people at the stores in Ritchey do not want to talk about this cemetery for some reason and put you off about it. One man has a website about Ritchey and talk about playing in the cemetery and he says no one knew the name of it then either. I would like to know the mystery of this cemetery, and why has it been abandoned Below is the Url of The Ritchey Web site http://www.vvm.com/~ritterh/ This is the sit about Ritchey MO It has a picture of the Holiness Church and the Cemetery is in the woods beside it, the men say the cemetery was a little longer than the church and a little wider. Some say the Church ownes it. It was over a year ago when we were there. I can not get my husband or anyone else to go back with me and look, I talked to someone else who was looking for there family in Ritchey and they had the same experience with people in Ritchey. They told me they now have a new fence put up. I guess after I raised some interest in it they decided to fence people out. They must want to sell the land and not let anyone know there is a Cemetery there. They do not want people to know. I wish someone could find info. about this place. I wonder if that Moller was my Mauller, Now I will never know. I found a Cemetery this years in Ritchey Mo. Thanks for listing Pat Short
In todays mailing of the MO-Cem Vol #1 No 15 a couple of problems were presented. 1. Some people on the list did lookups for others and I assume they were doing these lookups from various surveys published both by Genealogical/Historical Societies and lists on various web sites.. I have posted the following statements many times but for various reasons the same "Final" answers are given, "Joseph Such and So wasn't found". Why wasn't this person found? True he may not have been buried there, but you must must must remember: A. Not all burials have tombstones. It is estimated that something over 40 percent of all burials in cemeteries do not have tombstones. B. These cemetery surveys you are using, in most cases, are done by persons walking the cemetery and copying the information from tombstones. C. Do you have the correct spelling of the surname? Are you looking for a BUCHHOLZ and the cemetery only has BUCHOLTZ or BOCHOLZ burials, is it SMITH or SMYTH, CASSIDY or CASSADY. D. In the case of a female. Is she buried under her Maiden name? Married name (which one?) my great grandmother was buried next to her first husband and the tombstone carries his surname, however the office has her listed under the name contained on her death certificate (her second husband's name). E. These name mix ups may also apply to an adopted person, which name were they buried under??????? F. Just because the publication you have in your possession states that it covers the Cemeteries of Some County, doesn't mean that all cemeteries in the county are contained in the book. G. There is a cemetery in New Baden Illinois which has been surveyed and is on the net as such. Unfortunately it is incorrect. It is actually 3 cemeteries, Public, Catholic and Family. H. Another example, here in St. Louis a cemetery in South St. Louis just demolished a family mausoleum, how are these surveys going to handle that situation. I. There are at least three cemeteries in St. Louis that in recent years have removed tombstones due to nonpayment of perpetual care there were over a 1,000 destroyed in one cemetery. J. Cemeteries are relocated, daily, I participated in the relocation of over 7,000 burials in the past 7 years. Half of the cemetery is still there. Half is gone, how good would some of these cemetery surveys be in this instance? K. There were at least 3 religious cemeteries relocated in the St. Louis area in the last couple of years, convents are closing. L. Cemeteries continually relocate bodies within their boundaries, families consolidate their families. The one and only place that you can verify that a person is buried in a cemetery is to check the written record in the care of the office. And, even then there is no assurance that the person's remains were not interred. I had a relative who was cremated, the monument company salesman said the family could save a couple of hundred dollars if they just placed the stone and included the Cremains in the concrete base. The problem here the name of the person would not be recorded in the written records. Again, even if you see a tombstone, it doesn't mean that there was a burial. Every cemetery has Memorial Stones. This is especially true in the case of persons killed during a war or various other military situations. Every veteran is authorized a tombstone, it can be given to the family for placement or it can be placed in a National Cemetery. So when some gracious person tells you that your person of interest isn't buried in the county, they are really telling you that their name was not in the book they own. Finally, the tombstone is historically one of the least accurate of all sources of information. It may not have been placed for many years after the date of burial and just because it is in stone doesn't make it correct. Do yourself a favor check the site below for some other general comments relating to cemeteries.
