    3. This sounds like a great idea! And heaven knows, Coffee is the most important primary ingredient in any good project. :) It sounds like we're strating a project. Okay, I'll start it off - where is "locally," and how many interested people do we have in one fairly close aera? I'm in SE Kansas City, and for the actual clean-up and refurbishment work I'll go as far as Leavenworth , KS, or Warrensburg, MO. Where are all y'all? List Mom - can we keep posting about his here? Or would you rather we did it in private e -mail. It is sorta on topic, but I think it might get out of boundaries a little. Is this gonna be okay? Also, galdys in AZ's suggestions about getting Boy Scouts, Elks, and LDS involved are good. Once we zeore in on a location, we could also tap local genealogical and histoircal societies, Girl Scouts, local Vet organisaitons, if we know there is a veteran's grave, etc. Kathleen ----- Original Message ----- From: Victoria <Flower2@sofnet.com> To: <MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 07, 2001 1:51 AM Subject: Re: [MO-CEM] Cemeteries in disrepair > Dear Kathleen and List, > > I am know there are plenty of grave sites that need some TLC. 3. A good place to start is Call the Boy Scout Org. and tell them if they have Scouts needing a good cause to earn merit badges, perhaps this would be a good deed for them to participate in. Then contact other organizations,Like the Elks, Lion, an perhaps churches. I know that the L.D.S. church has participated in a lot of community project such as this. I have offered a small contribution to them, as I too am handicapped and on a very limited budget. It might work . Won't hurt. Gladys in Beautiful AZ. Though temporary technical difficulties are preventing me from providing a link from my FTM home page, the cemetery page can be accessed directly: http://24.131.178.142/genealogy/cemeteryindex.htm Mom is expecting me in Missouri in the spring for a visit, so the remaining headstones will be photographed then. Enjoy! 2. Kathleen
    3. Please connect with me before you post any item to the MO-CEMETERIES list that is not related to Missouri Cemeteries. There are many items out there of interest to each of us and many virus warnings, but if each of us send to the list something that we find important, or close to our hearts, or something we find of interest, this list could easy receive hundreds of non-related postings in a single day. I am sorry to have to be firm on this but the MO-CEMETERIES list is to large to encourage this type of postings. Each time we get off of the topic of this list we loose many of our members and one of these members just might have held the missing clue in your search of Missouri Cemeteries. I appreciate your support and willingness to help me in this matter. Kathleen Burnett List Mom

    3. Find a scout who his working on an eagle. They each have to have a big public project to plan and achieve. They can recruit other scouts to help. If you are in a rural community where students can walk to or gather at a cemetary without a school bus (most schools can't afford field trips anymore) find a social studies teacher who has assigned a geneology project. It would not be unusual for a student to find their ancestors buried in the cemetary near their school. ----- Original Message ----- From: Victoria To: MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, February 05, 2001 7:52 PM Subject: Re: [MO-CEM] Cemeteries in disrepair Dear Kathleen, I too think this is an excellent idea. 3. Along this line, I would like to tell everyone about a project that my daughter-in-law told me about being in when she was in the 8th grade. It was called Junior Historians and participation was not required. They did meet during school time, during off periods, etc. At the beginning of the year, the sponsoring teacher took the students to the local cemetery in Lampasas, TX which is very historic. They each chose 5 graves and couldn't chose one that was already chosen by someone else. From then on, for the rest of the school year, it was that students responsibility to keep "their" graves clean and neat and to learn as much as possible about that person and the time period they lived in. At Memorial Day, shop students (maybe High School) made each student 5 small wooden crosses. The students painted them white and stenciled in black paint; the Veteran's name, Military information, date of birth and death and placed them at Veterans graves. They could be among their original group or any other they wanted to include. I was very impressed with this idea. For one thing, it sparked a life long interest in Cemeteries and History with her. I'm sure the experience had a simular effect on the other students. Plus, she knows more local History than most young people do. I would like to see this extended to include all students. Maybe not to this degree of participation. But even inner city schools are usually within walking distance of an old Historic Cemetery. Even if it didn't seem to be making an impression at the time, I feel it would later. If just a spark of respect could be aroused in these teens, perhaps we wouldn't be seeing the deplorable vandalism. What do others think about this?
