Another thought: Drug labs and Marajuana fields abound in the Ozarks. Check with the county sheriff before you start out just to be safe. ----- Original Message ----- From: Becky Quinn To: MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, February 08, 2001 11:56 PM Subject: Re: [MO-CEM] Cemeteries disrepair Dad looked at my outline for cleaning up old cemetaries and he added the following: 1. JUNE: I should have added a little moreto my last email. The person in charge of the cemetery has to request a work party of prisoners it is not aotomatic. But that would be a good idea. That's why I mentioned the courts, th Judge could sentence someone to 30, 60 or what ever of cemetery clean up. later ral June Kline wrote: > Ral - must not be the same all over Oregon. When my third great grandfathers stone was replaced it wasn't a military stone either but once his service was proved they were still happy to put it in place and so far as I know at no cost to the family., The SAR paid for mounting it in Concrete and had a nice service too. I would call and talk to the VA in the mean time but remind me in March to get in touch with the friends (Myron and Barb Jones) for you. Good luck. Ginny
Ral - must not be the same all over Oregon. Last summer we were in Medford and there is a cemetery there by a highly traveled road that looks terrible. I asked about it and was told NO ONE wanted to claim it. Maybe you can report it to police. There are several stones in the cemetery and will soon be gone if something is not done. Had brush and sticks and weeds all over. Thanks. At the Newtonia Cem. there was a couple of men that metal holders for the tombstones there. They made it wide enough that the old fashion tombstones that stand upright would slip right through the metal and it holds the tombstones together where they can be read. Fred D. I wonder if it wouldn't be possible for a *skilled* craftsman to reconstitute broken markers with thin iron dowels and some kind of rock-crete/fiberglass kinda stuff. That is, if it couldn't be replicated instead. Kathleen ----- Original Message ----- From: B. It's not only youth groups that need the how to article. I could use it myself as there are several old family cemeteries I know of that need work. Vicki
Yes, markers can be ordered. I would check with the SAR (Sons of the American Revolution) for who handles the War of 1812. The stone can also be replaced at no cost if it is becoming illedgible. Friends of mine do this in Southern OH and if you will remind me in March I will contact them for you. They are on vacation till then. Ginny
I am no expert I have refurbished a couple and take care of my ancestors plots at 5 country cemetaries and 3 city cemetaries in Springfield. If I can find some time this weekend I jot down some suggestions from my experiences including needed tools, cleaning supplies and safety equipment. Ginny Thanks for the information. How hard is it to get documentation? I have his birth date, from his tombstone, but not much else in the way of supporting documentation. Is there a database at ancerstry.com or somewhere that I could run his name through? I'll try to remember to get back with you in March. The stone he has now is not an official military stone, so we wouldn't be talking about a "replacement". The stone he has now is, however, getting to the point of being illegible and it's broken off and laying on the ground so something needs to be done. I just wish the darn things weren't so expensive! Hi: Listers: Has any one thought of contacting the police or local Sheriff??? Here in Portland Oregon the prisons go on work details to the Pioneer Cemeteries every so often and do clean up. Also what about the Courts?? People are sentenced to so much community service for certain crimes. Hope this might help. A lot of people living out of state and still get home town papers might like to contribute to the up keep and/or repair if your local papers wrote an artical once in awhile informing which cemetery was being worked on,also while the work was being done the cemetery could be recorded, and out of staters might be encourged to pass on info on the burials of family members in those cemeteries to berecorded,I know some havebeen recorded, but when it`s too over grown alot get missed, another thing,is you might get some hardy fellows to go out now while it`s cold and cut out the big stuff, nothing can cut down on awork crew than a few encounters with a copperhead. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I have replaced complete headstones. When I did I kept the original and have it out at the farm. I made sure the replacement was exactly the same as the orginal. When a Stone breaks at the base and only is engraved on one side, I have had success (as well as others) in placing the headstone in a slab of concrete over the grave so that it is level with the ground and can be mowed over. You will have to talk to the cemetary committee or manager to see if there are any covenants against that method. I do know that many large public and private cemetaries do have covenants against that method. I have seen some really bad repair jobs out there. Show respect to your ancestor. Try to replace one if at all possible. ----- Original Message ----- From: mfwebber To: MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, February 08, 2001 12:53 PM Subject: [MO-CEM] Re: Cemetery disrepair Dear List members, I have tried to recruit family members from MO & KS who I know are descendants of a family cemetery in Putnam Co. MO. I have received some interest in cleaning and repairing the cemetery and also many many questions on how to do it. The cemetery is located on private property by a fellow who no longer lives in the state. The cemetery is almost totally unknown by people who now live in the county. It is overgrown and totally hidden and contains a Civil War soldier who was my great great grandfather, my gggrandmother, several of their children and grandchildren. I have heard or tried the following things and would like some feedback if any one else has run into these issues or knows answers to them: I have been told: 1).Once a cemetery is cleaned, sometimes Civil war tombstones are stolen and placed on the market for sale. They are hard to trace unless close up photos are taken and other photos to prove where the stones came from. This is especially true if the site is remote. 2). There are Civil War groups that are interested in helping identify and clean cemeteries where former soldiers are buried and they keep the information regarding these old sites relatively private to avoid desecration. 3). That the land owner can refuse to let repair take place. ( I plan on getting copies of the MO laws). I have tried: 1) I called the KC area Veterans Administration to find out if there was any group that helped with this type of issue. They didn't know. 2) I spoke with the tombstone company in the county and was told they really didn't now how to repair old stones. They had no list of local groups that could help. They suggested I hire local jobless workers clean the site. Any ideas or comments would be appreciated. I would really like to clean and repair my ancestors family cemetery.
