This is a hoax that was started in Canada a couple of years ago. It was modified for the US.
Carol -- I can try to find your Adkison/Adkinson next time I go to the Library. The particular book that I mentioned is one of several with that Title. A.H. Orr Editor, "The history of Saline County, Missouri", 1967 Walworth, Marceline MO Another is: Napton, William Buckley - "Past and Present of Saline County, Missouri" B.F. Bowen & Co. Indianapolis Ind., 1910 These two books are in our Johnson County Library, and I will peruse them for you when I can get out there. Possibly the best, (but quite expensive) is: "The History of Saline County, Missouri", published by the Missouri Historical Society of St. Louis, in 1881, and available as a reprint from Genealogy Publishing Company, Baltimore. I think the price is $95, since they print it to order. The List has been privileged in recent months to hear excerpts from this book, sent in by "Dwight & Shelly" dsanders@tacnet.missouri.org . You might ask them to lookup your bootheel cousins. Finally, I hear that the Saline County Historical Society has published a new book in the summer of 2000. The Marshall Mo. library is said to have a copy. But this book might not be useful for you, because it was compiled from people submitting articles of 500 words and one picture. Probably depends on when your Adkinsons were in the area. Send me your e-mail address and I will reply off-list. MSN has a dial pad feature and it has no compatiblity requirements. You can call another person's telephone from your computer. very nice feature and with a headset is not too bad a connection. You all keep up the good work. Communication is the only way to accomplish somethings worthwhile. Rich Moberly Bartlesville, Washington County, Oklahoma >>> ktho@kc.rr.com 02/09/01 12:08PM >>> This is also a great suggestion. Teh only catch is, in order fro one person to be able to call another - they *both* have to have the proper set-up. But other than that, it's pretty cool, really. > Another thought: Drug labs and Marijuana fields abound in the Ozarks. >Check with the county sheriff before you start out just to be safe. Oh wow, Becky! I didn't even think about this....Yes! absolutely! Okay, for those of you interested in the Find-A-Cemetery-And-Fix-It-Project....let's add "Check with local Sheriff and DEA" after site is chosen and land-owner has been contacted....Also add "Ask local Sheriff and DEA to go with us for first re-connoiter of site" Ummm...is anyone keeping track of where the interested people are and the suggestions we've been getting? I've kept all the e-mails and I'm making a separate folder for them, but should we maybe elect a Keeper of the Info Stuff? Anyone wanna volunteer? Also, should we start making a Potential Cemeteries list and start prioritizing and nominating them, so we can see better visually what areas of the state we are looking at? Maybe then we can priorities them based on criteria such as Closest to the most Warm Bodies, Degree of Desperation of Condition, Amount of Hard Labour Needed to Restore It, etc. Then we'd have of list of a certain number of cemeteries in order of need and how close they are to people. I'm thinking that if we are successful with the first one, it might launch a Cemetery Stompers ( I'm borrowing your phrase Deb - or if you don't want me to, say so and I'll respect it ) perhaps a Cemetery Rovers Society. Maybe there is one already? If so, perhaps they ought to go on the contact list as well? Then we might have better luck picking one and getting started with the actual research we're gonna need to do, which everyone can have fun with, even if they're too far from the site to get there in person. Another thought: Maybe we ought to add Roots Web, GenWeb, Family tree Maker, etc. to our list of Who To Contact for Help/Support. They're software & Web companies that most of use in one from or another. This is also a great suggestion. Teh only catch is, in order fro one person to be able to call another - they *both* have to have the proper set-up. But other than that, it's pretty cool, really. Mike --- No, the Harmony church apparently was dismantled and removed sometime following a windstorm that left the cemetery full of downed limbs and deadwood. The best guess is that this occurred in the early 1970's. No one seems to know when the cemetery was cleaned up. The word from C.J. Ellis said that the gravestones were transcribed in the early 1980's, and the cemetery was in moderately bad condition at that time. Here is a quote from Mr. Ellis: "According to Avlyn Conley, the on-line records are inscriptions and were taken from the stones in the cemeteries. This was done by, for the most part, Shirley Haynes, her mother helped sometimes, Dorothy Campbell, and then Rev. Wayne Merrill helped, too. Avlyn Conley retyped them on old mimeograph stencils and they did rest of the publishing. These inscriptions were copied in the 1970s & very early 80s and much has happened to many of these cemeteries since that time. Also, if there was no stone, no inscription, whether there was a burial in that cemetery or not. Shirley was very insistent in reading all stones, even if the stone was turned over. She would "mighty-mouse" that stone up so she could read it (Shirley Haynes has since passed away)." It looks like the cemetery was restored within the past 10 years, but no one has said who was responsible for doing such a great job. Does anyone happen to know? Dear List: I noticed that one of our subscribers is wanting to unsubscribe from this List because the discussion doesn't have anything to do with looking for family names. Since this is a "Cemetery" discussion list, I thought we could talk about anything to do with cemeteries, including cemeteries that are in need of care, location of cemeteries, care of tombstones, preservation tips, etc., not just names. That's why I subscribed. I didn't realize that these type of discussions were considered "off-topic" for this Board. Am I confused?? Also, how I manage my mail for the various lists I subscribe to is to create a message rule for each List. I have a separate folder for each List I subscribe to and my mail from those lists automatically by-pass my inbox and go directly into their respective folders when I download my mail. Then, whenever I have time, I browse through my folders. I find this helpful because it keeps all the clutter out of my inbox and keeps my List mail segregated and also prevents me from missing out on mail that may require my immediate attention. By the way, I use Outlook Express for my e-mail. You may not be able to create these special message rules with other e-mail programs. I've found that List mail is very sporadic. On some Lists I may not receive a message for days, and then suddenly a hot topic develops, and I may receive 50 messages in one day. You just have to expect that when you subscribe these Lists. By the way, in my opinion, I don't consider the amount of mail that this particular list generates "incredible". I've subscribed to some lists which have generated as much as 100-150 messages a day so this List is nothing compared to that. The MO-CEMETERIES Mailing List is for the discussion of any topic dealing with cemeteries, the care of, those buried in them, how to locate graves, cemeteries, inventories, care of stones, requests for help in locating graves of family. In short, anything dealing with cemeteries, graveyards or single graves in the state of Missouri. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
Gladys, Thank you for reminding folks about the Boy Scouts! As the mom of an Eagle Scout I know that Boy Scout troops are always looking for good and interesting service projects. Cleaning up an old cemetary that has fallen into disrepair is something that has the potential to make a great service project for a boy trying to earn his Eagle Scout rank. This is something folks may want to remember when contacting their local scout councils. Helping boys find service projects that fit the criteria for Eagle Service projects can sometimes be difficult so suggestions are always welcome. In the case of cemetaries I would ask to be put directly in touch with the scout executive for that particular district, and then ask if he knows of a scoutmaster in his district who may have a Life Scout looking for an Eagle service project or who would possibly be interested in tackling such a project as a troop. Believe me if he knows his district at all he will know which scoutmasters to have you call. For those who may not know scout councils are all listed in the phone book under Boy Scouts of America, that way if you don't know the name you can still find them easily. Ac ouple of sites that I know of are through Dialpad.com, Phonefree.com (I believe that's it) and there is something on Yahoo. Of course, you would need a microphone to begin with but they are reasonable to get. I prefer using a headset just so others around cannot hear what is being said by the other person speaking back to me. I'm sure there are other sites that may do the same things. One search engine that I have found to be of great help is (www.dogpile.com) Dogpile. You just type in what you are looking for ( a specific town or cemetery, for instance) and click on the work "fetch". It'll give you MANY other sites to check out. It searches many search engines. One other thing, it would be of great help (to me, at least) if when you all reply to a message, please cut out any of the repeat messages that usually trail underneaath. I'm doing an awful lot of scrolling when I generally have only 10-15 minutes to get through my mail. I am in the middle of tax season with H&R Block and my free time is very limited. I do understand that we need to have some of those on there so that we know what we are replying to--I'm all for that--but cutting out what we can is certainly appreciated! That's it for now. Charles, Your McMinn's are not in my Birth and Death Records Vol. 1 & 2. That does not mean they are not there though.
