    3. Ummm, I'm seeing a lot of unsubscribes all of a sudden...I really hope we aren't running off people, because if we are, I want to find a way to repair those relationships. As I see it, prowling old cemeteries and rescuing them from decay is a very important part of geneaology. You just never know who you'll find where or to whom that information might be important. I certainly think that looking up graves for folks is *just* as important and I never intended to marginalise those interests when I suggested a cemetery rescue project. I thought it was just a natural extension.... I'm feeling uncomfortable here..... List Mom? Kathleen

    3. If we are going to be looking at cemeteries around Jasper County, I know of several that already have pictures. Take a look at Gem, Bradshaw-Kahn, Alexander at http://www.cableone.net/rslewis/cemeteries.htm This would give us a starting point as to cemetery pictures. I will start a place on this page for just pictures for us to look at. I will try to work on that today. 3. Hello from California, When we cleaned our old family cemetery in Laclede Co., we cautioned everyone to not disturb field rocks or bricks. If people are familiar with old cemeteries, they quite often think everything but the tombstone should be removed. Not so! Also, I have read a lot of old newspapers on microfilm and have learned of people who were buried in the cemetery (but they never had tombstones). And talking to old timers in the area can reveal a lot of information as to who were buried there, as you know. And we found that talking to old timers is a real joy. And we also learned that cleaning a cemetery one year is just the beginning. Those weeds keep popping up. But once it is cleaned, there is so much pride in the workers that they are willing to return. Re unsubscribing--what is the purpose of this list? Isn't is anything and everything concerning cemeteries? One more point: Perhaps the lady who owns the little cemetery near the church would like to deed that land to the county. That will help in the future to protect it. My sister fenced our family cemetery--it too had broken stones from animals rubbing against and walking on them. After we (a group of us) cleaned it, we had it dedicated. And everyone wanted to contribute money to the cost of the cemetery fencing and cost of the memorial stones we had placed there, as well as the memorial stone itself. And the Pastor who handled our dedication told all of us that this is sacred ground and it should be kept clean. The Saturday before the family reunion on Sunday is always clean the cemetery day. Some of us who have grown older can no longer go there and help clean, but we did all we could do in the past. This began in 1988 and is still going on. Maxine in California with roots in Missouri

I have enjoyed reading the information everyone has been sharing on cleaning up the cem. I agree it would be nice if more people could take interest in keeping cemeteries up. But if it takes people interested in Genealogy to start it and then it take off from there, then it would be worth it. Going to a cemetery where your love ones are and it be ran down really hurts. Lets see what we all can do together and pass it on down to other generations after us. Cathy in Farmington Mo.

And then we can start looking for other volunteers. As I have went back through the emails I have found 3 are in OK 2 in Joplin 1 SE KC 1 SE MO 1 VA 2 in Oregon 1 Springfield 1 Newton Co. 1 Mercer Co. 1 Arizona We could also take pictures of the potential cemeteries and post them online so everyone could look at what we are up against. 3. Kathleen, I can only say that sometimes the amount of email this site generates can seem overwhelming at times. I too have thought of unsubscribing in the past for that reason. For example: My computer was down for the past five days and when I finally got into my email late last night the were 136 messages, most of them were from this site. I wonder if it would be possible to somehow set up a chat room for just such times as these when there is a subject of intense interest so that the back and fourth discussion could still happen without clogging all of the list members email. Just an idea. I agree with you though that preserving old cemetaries is something that needs to be paid more attention to, not just in Missouri but everywhere and if some of those members who do live closer together can save even one then this list has acomplished something wonderful. 3. MVG - The particular book that I mentioned is one of several with that Title. A.H. Orr Editor, "The history of Saline County, Missouri", 1967 Walworth, Marceline MO Another is: Napton, William Buckley - "Past and Present of Saline County, Missouri" B.F. Bowen & Co. Indianapolis Ind., 1910 I don't know whether either of these are still available, bu many libraries, such as our Johnson County Library, and the Mid-Continent Library in Independence Mo. have copies. Possibly the best, (but quite expensive) is: "The History of Saline County, Missouri",published by the Missouri Historical Society of St. Louis, in 1881, and available as a reprint from Genealogy Publishing Company, Baltimore. I think the price is $95, since they print it to order. The List has been privileged in recent months to hear excerpts from this book, sent in by "Dwight & Shelly" dsanders@tacnet.missouri.org . Because this book is so rare, you might ask them to lookup some particular information.. Finally, I hear that the Saline County Historical Society has published a new book in the summer of 2000. I think that the price was $50. The library in Marshall Mo. is said to have a copy, in their reference collection. I have not yet seen this book.. .
