What is the name of this cemetery? Since people are pissed about cleaning cemeteries dicussion on this list you can reach me at bquinn@dialnet.net. ----- Original Message ----- From: MKLewis6610 To: MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, February 09, 2001 5:03 PM Subject: Re: [MO-CEM] Cemeteries in disrepair Hello from California, When we cleaned our old family cemetery in Laclede Co., we cautioned everyone to not disturb field rocks or bricks. If people are familiar with old cemeteries, they quite often think everything but the tombstone should be removed. Not so! Also, I have read a lot of old newspapers on microfilm and have learned of people who were buried in the cemetery (but they never had tombstones). And talking to old timers in the area can reveal a lot of information as to who were buried there, as you know. And we found that talking to old timers is a real joy. And we also learned that cleaning a cemetery one year is just the beginning. Those weeds keep popping up. But once it is cleaned, there is so much pride in the workers that they are willing to return. Re unsubscribing--what is the purpose of this list? Isn't is anything and everything concerning cemeteries? One more point: Perhaps the lady who owns the little cemetery near the church would like to deed that land to the county. That will help in the future to protect it. My sister fenced our family cemetery--it too had broken stones from animals rubbing against and walking on them. After we (a group of us) cleaned it, we had it dedicated. And everyone wanted to contribute money to the cost of the cemetery fencing and cost of the memorial stones we had placed there, as well as the memorial stone itself. And the Pastor who handled our dedication told all of us that this is sacred ground and it should be kept clean. The Saturday before the family reunion on Sunday is always clean the cemetery day. Some of us who have grown older can no longer go there and help clean, but we did all we could do in the past. This began in 1988 and is still going on. The scout or his troop is not responsible for the expense of the project. they just do the work. Recently a scout group built some accessible paths for a school for the physically challange, The scouts brought tools, supplies and di the labor. The school paid for gravel, planks and nails. ----- Original Message ----- From: Cintrfire810@cs.com To: MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, February 09, 2001 4:54 PM Subject: Re: [MO-CEM] Cemeteries in disrepair Kathie, If the scouts do the cleanup who funds the project moneywise? Bonnie Morris Conrad Houston, Texas I have been reading all the email about cemetery restoration and I am interested too. I had a cemetery restored in Moniteau County by a man named Dean King out of Russellville, MO. He has a group of volunteers that he works with. They only work in their local area though and certainly have their hands full with that. I'm sure he would be willing to give advice on the work if anyone is interested. I am also involved with another group starting such a project in Ohio and they are in the planning stage also. I am so proud of my fellow genealogists as in my humble opinion restoration and maintenance is truly the way to honor our history and our ancestors. Let me know what I can do from Texas. Bonnie

Hi Group!! Now for my opinion. My mother-in-law & I write up old cemeteries, taking photos, do clean up if necessary, clean the stones, dig them up if they have become buried, fix them record the cemetery with photos, a map and # each space. Then we make a booklet out of the cemetery with land records, marriage records, death records obits, census records and tie the families together. We are doing this in Jackson Co, Mo and in Johnson Co, KS. Don't make such a big deal of getting money!! You don't need it. Just get a scout group to volunteer to clean the cemetery once a year in the spring or fall, before and after snakes & chiggers are out. Or 4-H clubs, HS National Honor Society, etc. or church groups. Its a matter of National Pride to keep the cemeteries in good shape and not be covered over. My kids & grandkids went with us to clean an old cemetery on my Dad's farm none of our relatives are buried there but we wanted it preserved. If a cemetery is really grown over it might take a group with grown-ups a couple of Saturdays to get it in shape, then a group can clean it easily once or twice a year. Be sure and don't try to do it in the summer in MO. it's too hot and humid. Please take photos before and after and if it is a real small cemetery record what you can and turn the info into the local Historical Society or the State Archives for that state. Thanks for listening!! Orita Powell Kirkman lineage@lds.net
I am thrilled with the amount of activity on the Missouri Cemeteries list. For those of you who are not quite a happy and want to be removed from the mailing list - please do not send your request to the entire list. This will not unsubscribe you. If you do not know how, then send your request to me personally kburnet@efortress.com. I would also like to request that if you are unhappy, send your comments to me, again not to the entire list. Sending your requests or comments regarding your unhappyness to the list just causes additional postings that do not deal with the subject of the list. I appreciate your help in this matter. What about a cemetery repair list?

Several years ago we were in a Bartow Co, GA cemetery, a virtual jungle, when I glanced at a field stone just as the sun was at the right angle to cast a shadow and reveal a simple name and date on a stone not much larger than a brick. It lasted only a very short time... but I stood there in awe of the captured moment. Elaine

But, if we're talking about more extensive work, righting stones and plant things and put in benches or rose arbours or something, then that could involve some expense but not necessarily a lot of it. For that sort of thing we'd have to ask for donations from any descendants we might know about, and from other places - either of money or of "stuff," or both. Kathleen
