    3. That is horrible. I'd want to lynch the jokers too. It seems that nothing is sared anymore for some people. My family and I had went to a cem. at Saginaw, Mo. and someone had spray painted 666, Satan is Lord, and Satanic symbols on some of the tombstones. It was spooky. You could just feel the evil. Needless to say we never went back. It just made me sick. Fred "B. Warner" wrote: > Fred, > > You want to talk about outrage. 3. Contact your state senator or representative and lets insure that this becomes a first class fellony and that a minimum sentence is assigned to convictions. This should apply to juveniles as well as adults. In the mean time a letter to your sheriff with many signatures asking for nightly drivebys and community alert meetings is a start. In MO, encourage your sheriff to understand that concerned citizens will watch his/her efforts and remember the response at the next election. ----- Original Message ----- From: B. You say you do use your metal detectors on churches so I don't see why you wouldn't use them to find cemeteries. Just my own curiosity going here. Keep the good ideas flowing. 3. Hi! I have a question. Why do these people destroy our cemeteries? It is stupid. I know most of it is young people on drugs or drinking. But when I was sowing my wild oats we never even thought of trashing a cemeterie. It makes me outraged. Maybe if we can get our cemeteries cleaned up maybe these jokers would be afraid of being seen in them and stay out if they're up to no good. I was at a cemeterie in Newton Co. one time getting data and this lady probably in her 40's was driving a big caddy. Well she was backing up and backed into a big tombstone and knocked it over. She gets out and looks at the damage then looks to see if anyone seen her. Well she seen me and took off like a bat out of China. But By George I chased her down and got her licence plate number and turned her in. Her insurance had to pay to get a new tombstone and she had to pay a fine. The police waited a few days to see if she turned it in but she didn't. Anyone can ask my children, they got in Dutch for walking on the flat tombstones. Fred D. Edens

    3. Most cemeteries around here now lock the vehicle entrance gate and have a walk through gate unlocked at all times. Makes it inconvenient, but better than the type of vandalism you described. One down the road from us (right off a heavily traveled major highway) had their Historical Marker deliberately knocked over by a vehicle. It was mounted on a strong pipe. They also have placed a concrete barrier in front of it now. 3. I think that scrubs make a beautiful hedge but they also hid people on the other side that are vandals that get their kicks by destroying stones and grave yards by driving through them. If it is open to the public then they MIGHT think twice before doing something to it afraid of being seen. This is just my opinion of course. And as for as fences, any that can go up can always be torn down. Cathy

Kathleen O'Brien-Blair wrote: BTW, my husband and I are also metal detectorists. I want to stress that we *NEVER EVER* detect cemeteries. That is Holy Ground as far as we are concerned, and treating it disrespectuflly is inviitng very bad Karma...Noooo.... Kathleen, I don't quite understand your not using your abilities to locate cemeteries. Metal pieces, even just nails can be used to find lost burial grounds. You say you do use your metal detectors on churches so I don't see why you wouldn't use them to find cemeteries. Just my own curiosity going here. Keep the good ideas flowing. I really think you guys have hit on something really important here. Maureen in RI

    1. [MO-CEM] Cem. Cleanup
    2. June Kline
    3. I AGREE WITH THE MANY OTHERS. too much ado about Cleaning up of Cem. Just do like my family has done for Generations. If you don't have some one else-- do it yourself. My parents and grandfather cleaned our cemetery with reap hooks on their hands and knees, and trimmed round stones with scissors. The job passed down thru the generations. We later obtained push mowers and later riders and a trimmer. I have done my share as well as my husband and our two sons. We have 7 generations on my Mother's side buried in this Cem that is somewhere between 2 and 3 acres in size. It is One of the oldest cemeteries in County, has many burials, some have stones some do not ,but we cleaned it all.. My people came from Germany and were hard working people and did not give it a thought but that your ancestors graves need to be cleaned off. We have been able to obtain some help later that was placed in bonds and interest is used to clean. Also one of my relatives left part of her estate for upkeep of Church and Cemetery. We can now hire it done as people DO NOT want to work for nothing anymore. I also have a private cemetery that has some of my father's people buried there and no one to clean. All you have to do is write a check and someone will do it and I did. I will continue to do Look up's for Knox, Adair, & Scotland Co. Cem. if others are interested, but most of my 125 messages today was about someone to clean cemeteries and not about lookups. Respectfully submitted by June Dye Kline.
