David: When I saw "Berger, Missouri" in your e-mail, it brought back old memories. I no longer live in Missouri, but I was born in Hermann and raised in Washington. I don't know about the cemetery you spoke of, but certainly know the territory. Before my ancestors moved to Missouri they lived in Kentucky and I would like to find a grave there. Could you please send me the URL of the USGS mapping program you spoke of. Thanks, Marjorie
From: David H Finke <dfinke@coin.org> To: MOFRANKL-D@rootsweb.com Subject: Know of this cemetery? My father's father's father was a civil war veteran (Union: 31st Mo. Vol. Inf.) who was buried on land that he farmed after the war, at Berger, MO. He was Henry (Heinrich) Finke, and his son Edward had the land after he, and my great-grandmother Mary (Maria) Finke lived with them until her death in 1932. Edward was father to Elda, who married Forrest Forderhase, still living in Berger, who still owns that land. This weekend I was looking at a USGS mapping program on the Internet, and in curiosity homed in on Berger (you can just give a town name; don't have to know coordinates), and went looking at the old family land. As I zoomed in to the highest resolution (1 inch = 200 yards) there on the topographical map, to my amazement, popped up the words "Fink Cem." on the wooded bluff to the north of the land where their house was. (The house is still there, clearly visible in the comparable aerial photo, right above the railroad tracks on the bluff, first building north of town.) This burial site had been known in the family (and perhaps elsewhere?) as "The Indian Mound," and indeed when several years ago we were prowling up there, we saw what appears to be an ancient burial site, pre-European. We haven't yet found great-grandfather's grave, tho we see stones of people with cousins' names (e.g. "Zeugin"). Others are buried in the more accessible St. John's cemetery nearer to town, on County "B". But this is the first time I've seen acknowledgement on a USGS map that the cemetery was connected with my family. I think I've missed it on other indexes because my great-uncle, the firstborn, Henry II, changed the spelling of the family name, dropping the final "e" -- and even had the 1920 census-taker erroneously list his mother that way, along with Uncle Ed's family! (This has caused a major family split, over the years, apparently, with rumors of gravestones having been altered.) Does anyone else reading this Franklin County list know of "The Indian Mound" (about a mile straight north of Berger) being referred to as "The Fink(e) Cemetery"? ============== David Hadley Finke 1106 Maplewood Drive Columbia, MO 65203 ===============

Since the list is asleep,or I`ve been unsubbed like list mom,I thought I`d relate an experience Ihad as a 13 year old bare foot Mo youth.I had been taught not to walk on graves out of respect, but the only time I disobeyed Mom about this fell into a grave,up to my waist,I was terrified, and stuck, thankfully the caretaker had chosen that day to mow.I often wondered if If Ihad died of fright,if people would have wondered if I had been climbing in or out.needless to say,I never told mom,and never walked across a grave again.....grin. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I have been concern that this list has been so quiet for such a long time and when looking into it this evening I found that I, your List Mom, had been unsubscribed from the list, and I have no idea as to how long. I sure hope all is well and there were no major problems or if there were, you took care of it. :) Good to be back. What a strange feeling to find out you are unsubscribed from a list you take care of. Like being locked out of the house with the family inside. Kathleen Burnett List Mom

David, here is the URL to the GNIS site. Carol http://geonames.usgs.gov/gnisform.html This will remind me of the ancestors requirement of me. "Tell them that you know of us" they say. I gave them my word. Renee Kemp, July-Aug. 2000, Modern Maturity Magazine

Velda, New Wells shows northwest of Cape Girardeau off of 61 highway on county road C.
You could also write the post master at Spickard.
I have been looking for a long time for the Missouri city of NEW WELLS. With the GNIS mapping, I found that it must be very close to Cape Girardeau, MO. Does anyone know where this is? Is there a cemetery in this city? Is it now part of Cape Girardeau? Does anyone live in that city who could write to me? vlchas@midwest.net Thank you! Velda Moore
