Marie, I am glad I was of some help. What is your gr. grandfathers name? I am not aware of any cemetery in the vicinity of the Buchanan County Farm, but there may have been one. Lee L. "Marie K. Lee, My grt.grandfather's name was Albert Register (possibly known as John as they might have been his middle name), born 1855 in MO (probably one of the three counties I mentioned). His relatives are buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery also known as the Register Cemetery. Do you know this cemetery? One young lady emailed me who is the person informing me that Pleasant Hill was known as Register. I don't know the location. I wonder if the County had special burial sections for the County Farm inmates. Marie Lee Lamar wrote: > Marie, I am glad I was of some help. What is your gr. grandfathers > name? Lee, You certainly weren't incorrect and I'm so glad you mentioned the Buchanan County Farm because it is just as a strong possibility my gr.grandfather might have been there. I only mentioned the Andrew County Farm because it is the only one I have ever heard about. My gr.grandfather had lived in three counties that I knew of, Buchanan, Andrew and DeKalb - there might have been others. His ancestors I know of are all buried in Buchanan County. In fact, Buchanan has been the county I suspect he is buried in. I'm happy to have two county farms to investigate. Thanks for writing again. Sorry I'm running several days behind. In reference to the following: [quote] Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 08:45:47 -0600 From: kimbuc@juno.com To: MO-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MO-CEM] Re: Fink(e)/Finks Dave, The GNIS site labels the cemetery as FINKS, this would not be the first time they have things wrong, with the coordinates of 384100N0912035W [endquote] I don't particularly blame the mapmakers. They probably made local inquiry, and talked to the "wrong" branch of the family. The eldest of my grandfather's brothers, Henry Jr., alone amongst his sisters and brothers, decided to drop the final "e" from "Finke". That's his choice, of course, but it became a problem when he told the 1920 census takers that his mother and other brothers' names also were spelled "Fink". It was on a fluke that I found them all, duly mis-spelled, in that census. But in modern times, at least our great-grandmother's name is correctly entered on her tombstone in the St.John's cemetery in Berger. And, you can see how great-uncle Henry and his son "Paddy" kept the mis-spelling on their tombstones. Of course, it was all "legal" -- just confusing. We human beings are a funny lot. Best wishes, David Hadley Finke (son of Hadley E. Finke, grandson of Emil H. Finke, all born in Berger.)

Anyway, my great-grandfather is buried in Elmwood Cemetery between Kansas City and Independence. He died in 1885 but there are some older and many newer graves there. A railroad track runs by the north side of the cemetery. No water tower there now but I suppose there could have been in the past. The managers of the cemetery have a good file and they will check for you by phone. Just a chance. Mel Duncan in Wyoming --------------AD8D275DA7E8056316FF01B8--
Marie, No, I do not have any photos of any kind. Yes, I was a small boy, under ten years of age. I was apparently incorrect in my thought that you were looking for the Buchanan County Farm. Another correspondent pointed out that you are probably looking for the Andrew County Farm, located a few miles to the North. Good Luck. Lee L. "Marie K. I don't know if there has been any discussion on Stoddard County Poor Farms, but my grandfather who was raised a couple of miles east of Essex says there was a poor farm a couple of miles north and east of where he lived at Crutcher Crossing near Hawley School, and near Old Broadwater Slew. When a fellow named Tom Haley or Tom Hailey got behind on his bills they would send him to the poor farm, but he didn't always stay. He says a lot of them walked away from the poor farm, but they didn't really care. He also tells of a hail storm so bad that it killed all their sows and baby pigs except one who had made a nest in a hollow log. That would have been somewhere between 1910 and 1917. ---------- >From: MO-CEMETERIES-D-request@rootsweb.com >To: MO-CEMETERIES-D@rootsweb.com >Subject: MO-CEMETERIES-D Digest V01 #94 >Date: Wed, Apr 4, 2001, 11:55 PM > >Content-Type: text/plain > >MO-CEMETERIES-D Digest Volume 01 : Issue 94 > >Today's Topics: > #1 Re: [MO-CEM] randolph County ["Betty Brooks" <berbrooks@centuryt] > #2 Re: [MO-CEM] randolph County ["Betty Brooks" <berbrooks@centuryt] > #3 Re: [MO-CEM] randolph County ["flooney" <flooney@cox-internet.co] > #4 Re: [MO-CEM] Cemeteries/Poor Farm [Lee Lamar <leelamar@swbell.net>] > #5 Re: [MO-CEM] Cemeteries/Poor Farm ["Bobbie Lynch" <blynch@kcnet.com>] > #6 [MO-CEM] Cemetery in Jackson Co., ["Fred D. My home county, Mercer County, MO, had its first poor farm just outside of Mercer, MO, and there was a cemetery attached to it. The graves were marked with large, square-cut pieces of limestone, but these contained no information about the persons, whose graves they marked. Sometime, about 1900, the poor farm was moved to Princeton, MO, and most of the residents were then buried in the Princeton Cemetery. I do not know if there were markers for them. I haven't checked to see. Some were buried in family plots in other cemeteries in the county. When I was a little child, a man, who had lived with my grandparents, had to be sent to the poor farm, when he became ill, and he is buried on their plot in the Coon Cemetery and has a granite monument, which was set by the family. Jennie Vertrees backwood@grm.net The only records available for the Mercer County homes are contained in records in the office of the County clerk. At times, a death, birth, etc. would appear in the newspaper. Yes, there were occasional births at the poor farm.
Thank you everyone. I don't feel so stupid now. I'm gonna check out any cemeteries near any old train depots in Jackson Co., Mo. Fred D. Edens
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about a cemeterie near a water depot in Jackson Co., Kansas City, Mo. ( I would also like to know what a water depot is.) I know that this sounds totally off the wall. But my Great Grandmother (who died when I was 2 years) was in my dream and she told me that I needed to check out a cemeterie near a water depot which is near the rail road tracks in Kansas City, Mo. In the dream she told me that some of our family are buried there. Because I have searched so much I am willing to try anything. Fred D. Edens
Concerning Shady Lawn Nursing Home, it is about 5 miles east of Savannah to a T junction, and south about 1 mile, more or less. Shady Lawn is definitely in Andrew County and I have been told it was the County Poor Farm at one time. It would be north of Rochester, but quite a ways north. I have a St. Joseph phone directory and Shady Lawn is listed with a Savannah Address, 13277 State Rt D. The building located in the northeast part of St. Joseph was a "Children's Home" at one time, back in the 40's and 50's. It is also now a residential home for the elderly called Green Acres. (Wonder if it was named after the old TV show?) And it is in Buchanan County, a long way from Shady Lawn, in Andrew County. I have family in Savannah and St. Joseph and am very familiar with the area. Hope this helps. Lee, Thank you for the information; it is so appreciated. It is interesting that your cousin was superintendent of the Buchanan County Farm. Were you just a child when you visited there? Do you know if there are any records available regarding the Farm or would you or any of your family have any news clippings, photos, etc. of your cousin working there or the farm buildings? I located Shady Lawn Nursing Home on the internet and find the address as 13277 State Rt. D, Savannah so I don't know if it would be the same or different. If you think of anything else about this, please let me know. Thank you again. Marie, I may be mistaken, but I believe the home you are talking about is actually the Buchanan County Farm. It is not in Andrew County, but just south of there. One could say it was about halfway between Rochester and Savannah. Actually, it was located at the northeast part of St. Joseph. A few years ago, the only building still standing was a brick dormitory that was operated as a nursing home. Shady Lawn Nursing home sounds familiar. I have misplaced my St. Joseph Telephone directory and cannot check this nursing home is still being operated or not. A cousin of mine was superintendent of the Buchanan County Farm from about 1927 to 1932. I visited there a number of times. The inmates that were able worked the farm and milked the cows. There was an infirmary for the elderly and ill. There were a number of large barns and a superintendents home, where I sometimes ate Sunday dinner. I do not recall the date it closed, but seem to think it was sometime after World War II. Lee L. "Marie K.
