Now, First of all, thanks, Dolores for doing the work from your Prague OK book. There's some names I'm interested in, but I promised myself last week no more research until after Roundup. Secondly, the news I'd promised the other night (yes, what I left you hanging with)... Mary Jane Beale b May 1834 TN d 1878-1879, md John P. Yates. This family was predominantly Stone County, until later in the 19th century. Mary Jane was full Cherokee. Her daughter, Mary Ellen Yates Hammer Overstreet, passed this knowledge down to her children and grandchildren. Mary Ellen's 2nd husband, George Overstreet, was my 2xg grandfather, and he, too, was apparently full Cherokee. This is something my grandmother has been told all her life, as far as George Overstreet goes, but we just received confirmation of it in the past couple of weeks from the White River Band of Cherokee. Here's Mary Jane Beale Yates' husband and descendants: Descendants of John P. Yates Generation No. 1 1. SCOTTA RAMSEY, b. Abt. 1905. I believe that Tony Keith was bro to Florrence Keith, who md Amanda Oliver, d/o Frances Archie and John Oliver. Some of the Olivers are also Cherokee, if my sources are right. The Keiths were German, if my information is correct. Someone was asking about Ramsey information in connection with the Cherokee. This is what Ramseys I have. The Pitts family, the Shepard branch in particular, may also be Cherokee. Any time you run into total blanks on your brick walls, even with courthouse burnings and what not, you may be running into Cherokee or other NA heritage. It wasn't advertised, is even downright denied, but there ya go. And if Mr. Earl Maggard, who I had the privilege of meeting Tuesday night with Ingrid, is to be believed, the Taney County Maggard lines were Irish and Cherokee. Maggard is a common Melungeon surname, but in this case, the Melungeon, if it happened, is quite a few generations back!
